Family Meal Time at Red Robin Review & Giveaway

Eating out is one of our little indulgences that we have as a family every now and then. One place that every member of the family can agree on is Red Robin. One thing about Red Robin that keeps us coming back every time is that we like so many things on the menu it never gets old. My husband usually orders the Royal Red Robin, it’s the tasty hamburger with an egg on it. Red Robin’s Royal Burger is topped with hickory-smoked bacon, American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomatoes and mayo and crowned with a fresh fried egg. It’s delicious, you really should try it next time you head on over to Red Robin

So back to my husband, he is the one that is the least likely to switch to something different, so I was quite surprised to see him order Clucks and Fries. But I really wanted to have some of them, I always need to remind myself to ask him what he’s going to have before I order. Every time I see what he’s having I have food envy. I enjoy what I have too, I just want what he’s eating.

My children usually order the cheese burger, but they have also tried the mac and cheese, Pasta & veggies, grilled chicken. The kids always split something and have water to drink. Their favorite part of every meal at Red Robin is the melon, eating it all the way down to the rind.  Of course, while we wait on our meals at Red Robin, we have color time and conversations about how our day went. Even Miles and Zoe get a turn telling everyone at the table what they did that day and if they had fun, or what Zoe learned at school.

I am the one that is willing to try anything on the menu. I love trying new things when they bring in new treats to the menu. The Grilled Chicken Pesto Pasta and the Grilled Chicken Alla Caprese are two of my favorites. I also enjoy eating the Whiskey River BB@ Chicken Wrap and the Gourmet Burger Banzai Burger with a side of BBQ sauce, but last night, I was in the mood for Mushrooms and Swiss. Action For Healthy Kids Share Your Breakfast with Kellogg’s

You might have missed the Share Your Breakfast twitter party on Tuesday morning with @MomBloggersClub, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for you to help make a difference in someone else’s morning. Kellogg’s has partnered with Action for Healthy Kids because they want to make a difference helping children who go to school on an empty stomach.

Can you believe that nearly 1 in 4 kids in America struggle with hunger? It’s not that surprising with the rise in the cost of gas and that groceries keep going up in cost. The easiest meal to skip is breakfast, but facts show it’s very important to have a well balanced breakfast to start off your day. The Kellogg’s Company believes in this and that the power of breakfast can help families make the most out of each day.

To Help, Kellogg’s hopes to share 1 million breakfasts in the 2011-2012 school year.

How Can You Help?

orange cinnamon rolls

Share Your Breakfast! Now through July, Kellogg’s is asking people to take a picture of their breakfast and share it at ShareYourBreakfast.com. By just uploading one photo to www.shareyourbreakfast.com or by texting the word SHARE with a photo or a description of your breakfast to 21534 one breakfast will be shared.

Every morning, Zoe loves to have oatmeal, a banana, vitamin and a glass of milk. Well, daddy made these wonderful Orange Cinnamon Rolls one morning and we all thought she would be happy for a change. Nope, this girl didn’t like the orange cinnamon rolls and had to have her bowl of oatmeal, a banana and glass of milk. I just had to share that about Zoe, realistically, I feel very fortunate that we are able to put food on the table and give our children anything at all, let alone let them have a choice in what they have for breakfast. So, I’m going to upload this photo of our Saturday morning breakfast with dad, to help donate one breakfast to a family in need!

What does your family like to have for breakfast?

Family Game Night This Week We’re Playing Mega Bloks Dominos Build Game

Thanks to Mega Bloks and Team Mom we received a new game to play and enjoy as a family, Mega Bloks Dominos Build Game.

image

imageThe Mega Bloks Company has grown out of just building blocks, having puzzles, games and more at their disposal. Using all of their wisdom gained over the years they put together a fun game of matching and building, Mega Bloks Dominos. In Mega Bloks Dominos children learn to have patience, taking turns and waiting to build the animal of their choice, elephant, lion, bear or giraffe. The first time we played, we made sure that we continued the game until everyone got to build their animal. Perfectly made for a family of four, mom, dad, Zoe and Miles can all play at one time.

Set up was easy enough for the kids to help with.

Directions/How to Play Mega Bloks Domino

imageEveryone picks and animal card. Then the youngest player gets to pick the starting domino. Then everyone draws two tiles. The youngest player then needs to decide if they have a matching edge to the card they played. If they do then they get to have one Mega Blok building piece for their chosen animal. If they do not then it is the next person’s turn. Go clockwise until everyone has a turn to play and then keep going until the animals are all built.

Attention spans of little ones is very short, which makes this a good game because playtime is very quick. We can usually finish a game with my son who has the shortest attention span of us all. It’s a great fun and easy to play family game.

MEGA Brands is launching the Mega Bloks Family Club, a brand new MEGA Brands blog and online community.
It’s FREE to sign up! When you become a member, you receive:

How To Cook Fresh Fish at Home & Homemade Salmon with Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

A friend of mine was reading my blog and saw that I’m terrified of cooking fresh fish. Wanting to rectify my dilemma she wrote an excellent piece on how you can cook fresh fish at home and included a Homemade Salmon with Sweet Potato Fries recipe. She also gave me permission to reprint her article to share it with my readers. So Here is Angie’s advice on how to cook Fresh Fish at home.

I recently read in my friend Louise’s blog that she didn’t cook fresh fish at home. In the same week I spoke with at least 3 other friends who said a similar thing about being intimidated by cooking fish or thinking that cooking fish would stink up your house. I think I even remember my mom saying that to me a while back when I said I’d made salmon for dinner. Well, I want to set the record straight right here and now! Cooking fish is easy and it does not stink up your house if you do it right! Let’s address these issues one at a time.

1. Myth: Cooking fish will stink up your house. There are two things you can do when handling and cooking fish that will leave you with a smelly kitchen. Follow these steps and you won’t have that problem. The first rule of a non-smelly kitchen is to remove the wrapper that your fish came in and put it in your outside trash. Most smell from fish comes from the wrapper in your trash can. The second rule is never fry fish in your house! I grew up in the south, and know that there’s nothing better than fried fish. But like we do it in the south, have your fish fry outside, not in your house.

2. Myth: Cooking fish is hard and should be left to professionals in restaurants. If you can turn on your oven, you can cook fish. The key to cooking good fish is to not over cook it. I’ve cooked both farm raised and wild salmon and have found that the wild salmon needs less cooking time. As long as you watch the clock and take your salmon out of the oven at the right time or even a little early you’ll have a delicious, healthy dish.

I tend to be more of a naked cook, meaning that I don’t like a lot of sauces or embellishments on a good piece of meat or fresh veggies. We eat a lot of steamed or roasted veggies with little more than salt and pepper on top. The same goes for a nice piece of meat or fish. That said, below is a recipe for salmon with a simple sauce for those of you who prefer toppings on your fish. Along with that is a recipe for very simple sweet potato fries that my kids love! Speaking of kids, a family member said the other day that kids don’t like fish. Well, I beg to differ! Salmon is one of my daughter’s favorite foods. Maybe it’s because we live in the Pacific Northwest, but fish is not an icky food in my house; quite the opposite.

Hopefully some of you out there who believed Myths #1 and #2 above will give this recipe a try and see how easy it is to prepare your own fresh, healthy, tasty fish in your own home!

Salmon Fillet with Dill Mustard Sauce

Ingredients:

1 lb salmon fillet (preferably wild, but farm raised is ok)

1/4 C prepared ranch dressing (organic preferred)

1 Tbs prepared Dijon mustard

1 tsp dried dill weed

(if you prefer a crunchy topping, you can mix in a few Tbs bread crumbs to the sauce)

Directions:

1. Run your hand across the top of the fillet to make sure there aren’t any bones. If you feel a bone remove it with your fingers or a pair of pliers used in the kitchen.

2. Mix ranch dressing, mustard and dill in a small bowl. Mix in bread crumbs if you are using them.

3. Place fillet skin side down on a greased cookie sheet. spread mustard mixture evenly over top of fillet.

4. Place fillet in an oven preheated to 350 degrees and cook for about 15 minutes for wild salmon and 20 minutes for farm raised or thicker fillet. Salmon should flake easily with a fork when finished.

clip_image002

Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients:

1 large organic sweet potato (red or white sweet potatoes are ok, red are sometimes called yams in the grocery although they really aren’t yams…but that’s a story for another time)

1 Tbs olive oil

1 tsp salt

1 gallon zip top bag

Directions:

1. Cut sweet potatoes into sticks that are fry sized making sure that no stick is more than about 1/4 inch thick in either direction.

2. Put fries into zip top bag then add oil and salt. Squeeze out all the air and zip the bag. Squish potatoes around until they are well coated with oil and salt.

3. Pour potato sticks onto a cookie sheet or baking dish in a single layer then roast for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees turning sticks over half way through cooking.

My Review:

When I put the lotion on in the morning, my hands still smell great at the end of the day. I’m also impressed that I don’t have the need to reapply throughout the day. Sometimes, I feel like using lotion is a scan, once you start using it you need to keep putting in on all day, but with Dial NutriSkin I feel like my hands are softer with just one application a day. If you read my blog often  you also know that I have very sensitive skin when it comes to lotion and chemicals coming in contact with my hands. So much so that testing lotions has become quite scary. I hate having swelling and itchy hands for a few hours. Well, guess what, Dial NutriSkin did not affect my hands at all! Dial NutriSkin Lotion is available for online purchase at CVS and you can follow it on Facebook and Twitter!

I received information about Dr. Jody Levine and samples on behalf of Dial.

Upgrade to a New Windows 7 PC and Get Free PC Setup

I’ve been using Windows 7 for, I dunno, forever! Windows 7 PC has been the most stable of Windows yet, I haven’t had to format my computer and it’s been WONDERFUL. Plus, all of the great features that come with Windows 7 PC make my blogging life a whole lot easier. Microsoft also has all of the free downloads, like Movie Maker, and Live Writer. Both I use daily with my blog. If you haven’t upgraded yet, now is the time!

You know with all the Spring Cleaning going on it’s time to spring clean your office and that includes your computer. It’s the perfect time to ditch the old and bring on the new…especially when it comes to your technology! I had a newsflash sent to me, did you know that Windows 7 is the fastest selling operating system in history?????. But the newsflash also said that some people are still holding on to those Windows XP machines (which is a technology over 10 years old by the way!). WHAT???

Why don’t they upgrade? Well, with loads of files, music and photos living on your hard drive, it seems like transferring all the data isn’t always as easy as cleaning out your closet. Which I have to agree with, backing up everything on your computer can be a nightmare! Did I get everything? I always worry we missed something

Newsflash: It IS that easy thanks to Windows and Staples this spring!

Windows and Staples are helping customers by bringing you the “Windows Easy Tech Offer.” For a limited time, when you buy any new Windows 7 PC online or in stores at Staples a PC technician will transfer all your data and setup your PC with the new Windows Live Essentials (including tools such as Photo Gallery and Movie Maker)—all for free! You even get a free Microsoft online training valued at $300 as part of the deal!

Staples will make sure all of your special photos, files, music, e-mail browser settings and favorites go with you to your new PC. Take all your data with you and get a new PC that will bring you into the modern age. And with so many great PCs available for less than $600, it would be silly not to.  Now wasn’t that easy?

For more information on the offer, visit windowsstreamblog.com or staples.com/windows

I received this information and felt it was worth sharing. I’m part of a Windows PC blogger test program and I can choose to write about things they send me or not.

Review: The Little Engine That Could on DVD March 22nd

clip_image001THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD on DVD March 22nd

Remember that familiar story of the Little Engine That Could? Before watching The Little Engine That Could on DVD all I could remember was the story of an engine that needed to go over a mountain and that when he believed that he could, he made it across the mountain. In The Little Engine that could animators applied music, magic, and confidence all in a great package. When Little Engine must leave Dreamland to deliver toys into the real world, she sets her fears aside and learns that with a little determination and courage, anything is possible. The Little Engine That Could debuts on DVD and Digital Download on March 22, 2011 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment with a cast of Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Patrick Warburton, Dominic Scott Kay, Brenda Song, Corbin Bleu, Alyson Stoner.

I was watching this with my own children and Miles loves trains, he just loves them. While he was watching it he was enthralled. The whole story, music and adventure had him going from start to finish. My daughter, she enjoyed the story too. I was trying to tell her that the engine was working really hard to make it up the hill to save the day, just like she was working really hard to ride her bike up our hill the other day. Well, she said, mommy that’s a girl just like me. I’m really hoping that she sees the lesson in this video and starts to believe in herself and her ability to rider her bike. I hear the words “I can’t” a lot around here and now I have some ammunition to use against those frustrating words. What about The Little Engine that Could?

More About the Release

Correlation Between A Clean Scent and School Performance Levels

Did you know that there are studies done on the correlation between a clean scent and performance levels at school? A New Taste & Smell Research Foundation conducted a study, commissioned by the maker of Pine-Sol cleaners. In that study they found that children who perform better at school almost always identify their homes with scents associated with clean. The study also showed a correlation in the memory of positive scents and their performance, demonstrating that it begins at an early age and is something that parents can impact.

reading to kidsA big mess is distracting, that’s for sure! Growing up, our house was always clean. You could smell it when you walked in the door, and we didn’t have any problems in school, so I’m inclined to believe that there is a correlation between a fresh clean scent (the memory of cleanliness) and the ability to focus (creating higher performance levels).  I find that I impact my children most by being an example. At ages 4, and 3 they are already helping me clean the kitchen, their rooms, and do laundry. All of which I make sure they see me doing. When it comes to learning, I read to them and make sure they see me reading. I know I learned a lot by the examples in my home when I was young so I’m going to make sure we have a fresh clean house for our kids to grow up in too, it can’t hurt.

Here are some other facts from the Pine-Sol study:

  • Children who perform better at school almost always identify their homes with scents associated with clean – 84% of students reporting GPAs of A or B had positive childhood home smells – using descriptors like “lemony, minty or clean”; with only 16% noting negative smells at home.
  • Those who recalled their childhood home as being an environment with negative smells or aromas were two-times more likely to have a lower grade point average (GPA) than those that did not.
  • The study demonstrated a positive connection between a well-cared home and the sort of stable family environment that promotes academic success, self-esteem, learning and harmony – and enhances achievement later in life.
  • 34% of students with a GPA grade of C or less, remembered negative childhood home aromas including urine, fecal and mold – double the percentage of those with higher GPAs.

My People illustrated by Charles R. Smith, Jr

Langston Hughes’ spare yet eloquent tribute to his people has been cherished for generations. Now, acclaimed photographer Charles R. Smith Jr. interprets this beloved poem in vivid sepia photographs that capture the glory, the beauty, and the soul of being a black American today.
2010 Winner – Coretta Scott King Award

The Lion & the Mouse By Jerry Pinkney

In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney’s wordless adaptation of one of Aesop’s most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he’d planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher’s trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.
2010 Winner – Caldecott Medal
Ages 4-8

The Dot By Peter H. Reynolds

Peter H. Reynolds crafts a quiet, pleasing story in The Dot–one that will strike a chord with children who have outgrown the self-assurance of kindergarten and begun to doubt their own greatness. His marvelous watercolor, ink, and, yes, tea illustrations are appealing in a Quentin Blakey way, especially as Vashti begins to go wild with her dots. The delightfully open-ended conclusion will have readers of all ages contemplating how they can make their own mark in the world. Highly recommended.
Ages 5 to 9
