60 Day Slim Down Completed With Summer

I completed the Lindsay Brin’s 60 Day SlimDown and I have to say I loved it! If you’re following the dates though you’ll see that I completed the system in more than 60 days. My family took a ski vacation for 2-weeks and between travel days (we drove) and ski days which required rest. Let me also say working out at 7,000 feet is hard stuff! Anyways, I’m very happy with the results so far:

Why did I say “so far” at the beginning? When you buy the 60 Day SlimDown you don’t just get the DVDs and 60 days worth of instruction. You have the option to continue using Lindsay Brin as your workout guru for a monthly fee of only $5 and you can continue for as many months as you’d like to lose or maintain weight. I think this is a great deal considering the verity and instruction. Knowing I had an assignment every day really make me feel I had to workout; it was my job. Better than the prices at the gym for the same old treadmill machine.

My opinions on the videos:

clip_image001

Shed 5 Fast DVD – $15.99 – This video offers two different workouts each with beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. This is an interval workout which takes you through 2-minutes of strength training exercises before a cardio series, and then repeat; Lindsay calls this “3/3 Interval”. The workout last 24 minutes plus a 3-minute warm-up and cool down. If you give this your all, you will hurt!

clip_image002

Postnatal Boot Camp – $15.99 – I think this might’ve been one of Lindsay’s first video. The production company did a poor job of creating, transitioning, and editing the fill (for example the boom continually appears in the screen). However, this video offers a unique mix-n-match option for both core and intervals. The video offers 6 different core routines each 3-minutes long, 10 different cardio and toning intervals each 10-minutes long, and a 3-minute each warm-up and cool down.

clip_image003

Core Firing Sequence Method – $9.99 – This is as Lindsay promises, a “Tummy tuck without the surgery!” This video really got me standing up straight again after YEARS of being pregnant and not correcting it post pregnancy. I could feel my core changing with this video. I really felt the burn with Phase 3 (the final phase); though you need to properly follow the sequence to get the full effects of strengthening your core.

clip_image004

Core Metabolic Jumpstart – $13.99 – This DVD only offers one workout that lasts 23 minutes total, start to finish. The DVD is great for the mom who needs to workout within the constraints of a busy day. The video is short but not easy.

Do be advised that the workouts in the first 30 days are 30-minutes or less. However in days 31-60 the workouts are about 40 minutes long to increase your workout, stamina, and calorie burn.

The total value of the 60 Day SlimDown is $55.96. On the Moms Into Fitness site you can get the system for $49.99. Thanks to Lindsay Brin, Mom Start readers can get the 60 Day SlimDown for 30% off using promo code 60daydvd30.

What Would You Do Without The Internet or TV? Vlog

Welcome to Monday Mingle!

mondaymingleThis week’s questions:

Current questions {week of 3/21/11}:

1. What would you do for fun if you had to give up TV and internet?
2. What is your favorite breed of dog?

3. What is under your bed right now?

My answers:

If I had to give up internet and TV then I would go back to painting. I used to paint a lot before I had kids. I have tons of artwork under my bed, which happens to be question number thee. Of course if you really wanted to get down to what’s under my bed, we also have cracker packages, my iPad is under my bed along with a package of chocolate that I’ve been slowly working on since Valentine’s Day. I think in the video I said Mother’s Day but that’s not until May and rest assured the package of chocolate is not THAT old.

My favorite breed of dog is yes, chocolate labs, my dream dog that we recently decided we were not able to keep. Having a dog, a blog, traveling and two kids makes taking care of a puppy exhausting. So she’s living with a new family now that can care for her better than I could.

I look forward to reading everyone else’s answers this week.

Remember, Monday Mingle is a chance to chat over video answering questions. It’s fun and the more video you do on your blog the more comfortable you will be in front of the camera. Want to participate? Monday Mingle is a Meme over at Eighty MPH Mom. Go over to her site, find the questions, take a video of the answers and post them to share. Then visit everyone that linked up and have fun getting to know each other. However, if you aren’t ready to do video, just post the questions on your site and answer them. Then link up and we’ll still come and visit you leaving the answers.

My Son Turned 3 Yesterday

I just watched my little baby boy turn three years old.

 IMG_9076

We had quite an “Hopping” day. We didn’t plan it this way but it turned out to be a complete bunny hopping themed day.

We went to the movie screening for Hop! About an Easter Bunny not quite ready to be The Easter Bunny.

hop movie poster

The birthday boy made his own Rainbow cake, and if these colors don’t remind you of Easter Egg colors I’m not sure what will

IMG_9099

He received a bunny from his grandma, and the bunny’s name was Miles just like him! He’s sleeping with his bunny. He also received a trampoline and a hopper ball. So we’ve been hop hop hoping around here all weekend!

Perkins Free Pancakes Monday March 21st To Raise Money for Kids

I love serving my community and blogging makes it possible to make a big difference. I’ve donated about 20,000 in products over the past two years, and had the opportunity for a company to donate 1500.00 to a charity of my choice. So making a difference in my community means a lot to me and it means a lot to me when companies help communities.

pancakesPerkins Restaurants contacted me with something they are doing for children. Perkins works with Give Kids The World (GKTW) a non-profit organization that provides week long vacations to very sick children.

Did you know that each year in the U.S., 27,000 children are diagnosed with a life threatening illness?

Since 1986, GKTW has served more than 100,000 families from all 50 states and 70 countries. Families enjoy a week-long, cost-free vacation that includes accommodations at the Give Kids The World Village, meals, donated attraction tickets (including Disney World), and more. They even get to eat ice cream at breakfast!

Perkins Restaurants has been working with GKTW for nearly 20 years. They serve more than 200,000 meals for free located at the heart of Give Kids The World Village. Over the years, more than 4 million free meals have been served. In addition to annual fundraising efforts, ongoing activities for Give Kids The World include community-oriented events and specially marked coin boxes for spare change in the lobbies of most Perkins restaurants.

Now, on Monday March 21st, Perkins Restaurants across the US and Canada are offering you guys their legendary, buttermilk pancakes for free during Perkins Pancake Day. In return Perkins hopes you will consider making a donation to Give Kids The World.

Disney Junior’s Special Agent OSO Rapide Command Center Toy By Learning Curve

Special Agent OSO logo

My kids love to watch Disney Junior’s Special Agent Oso. He’s O-So special, just like your children. Now their toys can be O-So special with the new Special Agent Oso R.R. Rapide Command Center from Learning Curve.

If you’ve never seen Special Agent Oso (oso is the Spanish word for bear) on the Disney Channel, it’s a preschool series starring a teddy bear named Oso who is a clumsy, lovable special agent-in-training. Oso is training under an international organization of stuffed animals, such as his co-agent Wolfie, serving the international agency called U.N.I.Q.U.E. (United Network for Investigating Quite Usual Events) which helps kids accomplish everyday tasks. During his missions Oso enlists the help of viewers at home to complete his special assignments — such as making a sandwich, catching the school bus, and conservation — using three simple steps. Each completed mission is rewarded with a Digi Medal which Oso stores in his electronic Paw-Pilot. R.R. Rapide was recently introduced as Oso’s main form of transportation; Rapide is a high-speed railroad car with a big personality. Each Special Agent Oso episode is cleverly named after or in the likeness of James Bond films.

IMG_0791Special Agent OSO Rapide Command Center

The Special Agent Oso R.R. Rapide Command Center from Learning Curve features Rapide, Wolfie, and Oso. Rapide extends to over 3 feet in length and included a launch pad for Wolfie on his motorcycle. Rapide also includes 2 jet packs with an automatic jet pack loader, elevating captain’s chair, front hatch automatic opening ONLY for Oso, lights and sounds, and a collectable Digi Medal.

This is a super fun toy. I love that Rapid is interactive with Oso and that there are so many moving parts. I also love that there is more than one action figure, vehicle and jetpack; you get two action figures – Oso and Wolfie with a detachable jetpack each – and two vehicles a motorcycle and Rapide the train. For your value this is a great play date or siblings toy as you don’t have to purchase add-ons if you don’t want to since this toy offers so much. This is a great buy and a great value for hours of continuous play.

The SRP is $39.99 and Target stores should have the product in stock, but I also found Special Agent OSO R.R. Rapide Command Center at Toy R Us for a higher price and Special Agent OSO R.R. Rapide Command Center on Amazon for a cheaper price. You can also enter your zip code into the Learning Curve site and find a dealer near you].

Memories at Grandmas with Angie: Early Spring Spaghetti and Fried Morel Mushrooms Recipe

I grew up in a small town full of pride even to this day in the central part of Illinois. Tractors and the American flag were both popular during my childhood. Both my grandparent were farming families and even though my parents grew up in town I must say that it was a town that is very different than were I raise my own children. tractor

It was a town where everyone knew each other and the streets were safe to walk on. It was nothing for your mom to let you go up town to buy a loaf a bread or spend the change you had collected at the young age of eight or nine. Every summer in this small town we would spend time out in the country enjoying Grandmas cooking on Sundays, playing baseball in the pasture or taking a leisurely walk looking for mushrooms.

Morel mushrooms were what we were after and when the weather started getting warm and after a good spring rain we would head out to look for them. Have you ever had morel mushrooms? Recipes to prepare the mushrooms may vary but the one that we loved the most was:

How To Prepare Morel Mushrooms:

1 big haul of fresh morel mushrooms
2 lbs. real butter (or margarine)
1 dozen eggs
1 box saltine crackers

Mushroom Preparation – Wash and cut fresh mushrooms into quarters, slicing long way. Soak in large bowl of salt water to remove and kill all those little pesky critters. Leave soak in refrigerator for a couple hours.

Melt butter in the skillet dip mushrooms in egg and then roll in saltines that had been crushed. Fry to a light golden color and then all there is left to do but enjoy

Spring is also the time for softball and baseball. Most kids in this area play ball from the age of six years old till they graduate in high school. My grandmother and mom always believed in making a good meal with plenty of carbs for energy before playing the game. Whitey Herzog was the coach of the ST. Louis Cardinals when I was playing softball as the catcher of the team. In one interview that he gave he mentioned that spaghetti was the meal that many members of the team would have prior to playing ball. So guess what my mom went and did. yes, you guessed it she would make spaghetti dinner each night before playing a game of ball. Here is the recipe that she often used when I was a kid

Spaghetti Dinner

1/4 cup Crisco
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 pound lean ground bee
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 (4 oz.) can mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1/4 cup chopped parsley or 2 tsp. dried parsley flakes
1 (8oz) can tomato sauce
2 cups (1 lb. can) tomatoes
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/4 tsp. pepper
dash basil
bay leaf
1/2 pound thin spaghetti

In a large skillet melt Crisco, add onion and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in ground beef and garlic salt; brown. Add mushrooms, parsley, tomato sauce, tomatoes, salt, oregano, pepper, basil and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Uncover and cook for about 1/2 hour longer, until sauce is desired consistency. Cook spaghetti as directed on the package; drain. Spoon meat sauce over spaghetti on platter or on individual plates.

These are just a few of my memories from early spring when I was a kid. Depending on where you lived you may have your own memories and they may be very different from my own. What were your memories? Would love to hear about them. Be watching for upcoming post as I share more about my childhood and the recipes that my mom, grandmas and my favorite cooks prepared.

About Angie:

Angie is going to be bringing us meals and memories as a weekly contributor here at Mom Start called Memories at Grandmas. She writes daily at Shop Annies, Annies Home where she constantly shares recipes, tips, and wonderful products she and her family of six children uses.

A 24 Hour Quarantine?

So, I didn’t get any blogging done yesterday, I was in bed all day. Until my husband told me I should probably get up so that I could sleep the next night. All I could think from my bed was, I want to stay in this bed FOREVER!

But I followed his suggestion and got up and went outside with the family.

What was wrong with me, you might ask.

The stomach flu!

Remember, just Wednesday, I was worried about my parenting skills when I refused to comfort my son when he was terrified of being sick. His illness only lasted a few hours, at least that’s what I thought, I think he was sick in his bed and never told me he threw up in it. Gross? Yeah, finding his mess was disgusting, but I still thought we were all through. I mean even 24 hours after he stopped throwing up none of us were showing signs. We went out to MOMS Club, had our Nutella Party (which I’ll be blogging about shortly) and had a great day. Then around six PM, I started feeling nauseous. But it wasn’t until 2:00 AM, exactly 36 hours after my son stopped throwing up that I started. Then just after I was sick, my daughter came into the room and told me she was sick too, so for the next six hours, my daughter and I took turns. Which isn’t really the point of why I’m writing this.

I’m wondering????????

How long are you supposed to keep yourself and your kids away from others. I mean, I wouldn’t wish the stomach flu on anyone ever. I actually thought that 24 hours was enough time, and hopefully it was and Zoe and I didn’t infect all of our friends, but what if we did? I guess all I can do is say I’m sorry friends.

So normally, is waiting 24 hours enough time, or once you feel better do you think it’s ok no matter how much time has passed? I’m just wondering if there is a courteous 24 hour quarantine, or should it be bumped up to 36?

Upside-Down Peach Cornbread Cakes Recipe

I’m still cooking my way through the KitchenAid Recipe Collections Cookbook and last week I made the family Upside-Down Peach Cornbread Cakes for dinner. My neighbor is always asking me what I’m making for dinner and he said, “you’re making dessert for dinner!!” and at first I didn’t think so. We’ve had cornbread for dinner before, I’m just adding peaches, and uh, yeah, sugar. So I did make dessert for dinner and it was pretty good. Not my favorite recipe, but the family loved it, my husband even ate it for leftovers, which just doesn’t happen in our house unless it’s really good. This recipe has my adaptations but is definitely inspired by the KitchenAid Recipe Collection .

Corn Bread Peach Cakes

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons margarine/butter divided
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar divided
2 jar of Del Monte Peaches drained and rinsed
2 packages Jiffy Cornbread Mix (the Jiffy containers are just the right size)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or use applesauce)
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. I got out my Wilton Easter Muffin tin, but the directions say to use 8 (1-cup) ramekins [which at the time I had no idea what they were, turns out, I do actually have some Pirex Ramekins in my cabinet (oops)]Place 1/12 teaspoons butter and 1 tablespoon brown sugar in bottom of each ramekin. Divide 1 jar of peach slices equally among ramekins.

Whisk together cornbread mix, oil, eggs and milk in a large bowl. (I forgot this step and my cornbread was really dry so don’t forget to add the second jar of peaches). Stir in the peaches. Place ramekins on baking sheet. Pour 3/4 cup batter into each ramekin. Bake 20 minutes or until golden and toothpick inserted into centers until they come out clean. Let cool 5 minutes. Run knife around edges of ramekins. Invert cakes onto serving plates.
