I Forgot My Coffee and a McDonalds New Fruit and Maple Oatmeal Giveaway

My kids’ favorite thing to eat right now for breakfast is Oatmeal. They love almost any flavor and adding fruit makes it even more enticing for them. So you all know that I love McDonalds right? I know, I shouldn’t love them, but I do. The convenience is there and we don’t go nearly as often as we did a year ago, in fact it’s been about three weeks since I went through that beloved drive through. I took Miles there three weeks ago, my soul purpose was to get a coffee because they are good, great even and cheaper than Starbucks right?

Well, I order my coffee, and then I decided to get a cookie for Miles and they had 3 for 1.50 or something like that. Then by the time I pulled up to window, paid then pulled up to the second window, and they gave me the cookies. I gave one to Miles and started eating mine and I drove off.

McDonalds Fruit and Maple OatmealWithout My Coffee! (oh and I forgot to mention that on my way to McDonalds I backed into someone in a parking lot and they were parked, I was having a bad day and greatly needed this coffee)

Oh, I really wanted to get that coffee, it was the only reason I went there and then no coffee, and I paid for it and I was already having a bad day so I just drove home and sulked while eating my cookie.

Next week, I shall return to try their oatmeal and grab another coffee, I’ve already been told by a neighbor that it’s good (and she is VERY trustworthy!). Which is why I agreed to host this lovely giveaway for you wonderful readers of mine!

I WILL NOT DRIVE OFF WITHOUT MY COFFEE NEXT WEEK

Treat Your Valentine with a Schwan’s Dessert Delivery Giveaway

I love Schwan’s! I’m not really sure why I haven’t looked into getting a delivery from them. They have so many great options to choose from. We had their Pot Pies last Fall and now we’re eating our way through their dessert menu. I even told them I would put together a video of us trying out their desserts and while I was away, my husband ate almost all the ice cream. It was my fault really, I didn’t tell him I was going to do a video review, and I don’t like fruity ice cream. I’m just not a big fan of seeds and Raspberries are full of seeds.

The night after I got home from my trip, he asked me if I wanted any ice cream. I asked him what we had, and we had Peppermint, Spumoni and Raspberry Rumble Premium Ice Cream from Schwan’s, I wasn’t so excited about it but I said that I needed to have a bite because I needed to write a review. So, I had a bite…. and… I wanted another… and I wanted another..

Dessert Trio from Schwan's

My husband got up and took the bowl with him, he said, you can have your own bowl I don’t want to share anymore with you. So we each had our own bowl. And I was really sad to find out that was all that was left. It was delicious! Oh So Delicious I want MORE. I wish it was sold at the grocery store because I want it right NOW!

I was shocked because I’ve never liked fruity ice cream before. MMM

But that wasn’t all they sent me. They also sent me microwaveable brownies and a bag full of frozen berries the Triple Berry Blend. My kids adore fruit!!! When I told them they get to have a brownie and fruit they were so excited. Bouncing off the walls excited.

schwan's desserts

Again, I wasn’t disappointed in the outcome. The kids had half of a brownie each and a bowl full of fruit. Me, I just had an entire browning to myself, because of all those seeds looking  out at me. So treat your Valentine to a Schwan’s Dessert Delivery Giveaway!

Enter to Win:

The ice cream $5.36
The brownies $5.68
The berries $7.40

Total value      $18.44

Gnomeo And Juliet Swag Bag Set Giveaway 2 Winners

When you just thought I ran out of stuff to say about Gnomeo and Juliet you were wrong!!

clip_image001This movie is about two Gnomes that just can’t be friends, it’s just like Romeo and Juliet right? Well, you’d be wrong again if you made that assumption. It’s close, but…..

As I’m afraid that if I continue to talk about the movie I would give too many facts away, or too much of my impression (YES I LOVED THE MOVIE) away, I’ll just leave you with a few fun facts that made me go Oh yeah, I noticed that the second time I watched it but still didn’t get it until you put it right in front of my face like that.

Ok, sorry for the run on sentence…

Fun Gnomeo and Juliet Facts put together by our Friends at Disney I mean Touchstone! The filmmakers offer a nod to Shakespeare in several ways: (my favorite is that Patrick Stewart is the voice of Shakespeare, I mean, how many times has the man played a part in theater over there in England, I wish I lived in London!)

· In a nod to “Hamlet,” Miss Montague’s mailbox is numbered 2B, while her rival neighbor Mr. Capulet’s mailbox is 2B with a red slash through it (“NOT to be”).

clip_image001[4]Yes, I saw it twice, and couldn’t not figure out 2B 2B Next time I promise to laugh out loud!

· “Macbeth” is referenced in a scene in which Juliet is threatened by a bulldog. She slams shut her garden gate and shouts “Out!”—followed quickly by the dog’s distant owner yelling “Damned Spot!”

· Featherstone’s shed interior features a ticket stub for “As You Like It.”

· The truck that rolls through and accidently drops a couple teapots (later mistaken by several gnomes as a broken comrade), is marked “Tempest Teapots.”

· When the Goons glue Juliet to her pedestal, the glue is labeled “The Taming of the Glue.”

Now you can watch Gnomeo And Juliet on February 11th and laugh as if you were a Shakespearean buff!

But while you wait, enter to win:

(2 winners)

- Gnomeo & Juliet t-shirt in youth sizes of S, M, L, XL and colors of red or blue
- Gnomeo & Juliet one-size fits all beanies in colors of red or blue

National Wear Red Day

A Guest Post by a friend of mine, Lisa Hwang

Friday, February 4th is “National Wear Red” day, promoted by the American Heart Association. In the past, this day has come and gone without any particular significance for me. This year is different. You see, my dad had a major heart attack in May that left him on life support for several weeks. But I am one of the lucky ones – my dad survived. He is still working on recovering from his “heart adventure”, but is getting stronger every day. I am very proud of him – I always have been. I am elated my dad will be here to walk my little sister (Okay, she’s 30 – don’t tell her I told you.) down the aisle in a few weeks.

After HospitalNow…my dad was only 56 years old. He wasn’t a “nut and berry” type of eater, but watched his weight, ate well, and exercised moderately…he wasn’t your typical heart attack victim. He regularly visited his general practioner, but not a cardiologist. It was a shock to see my healthy, vibrant dad suddenly so, so sick.

While lots of my friends know about my dad, many do not know about my aunt – my dad’s sister. She had her first heart attack a year prior to my dad at the age of 47. She also survived her heart attack and has made important changes in her life to improve her health.

So…it is clear to me that heart disease is in my bloodline. I am 33 years old. I am a mother to my two-year-old daughter and am expecting my second daughter in July. I am married to my high school sweetheart and have no plans to leave this earth in the next 15 years, God willing. So what am I doing to keep myself heart-healthy?

First, I went and saw a cardiologist. I had my cholesterol and blood sugar checked. I also had a non-invasive ultrasound of the carotid arteries in my neck to check for early plaque build up. I paid about $200 out-of-pocket for these services since it is strangely not considered “preventive” for my age bracket – whatever, it was worth it for me to pay. I pay attention to the amount of sodium we eat. I try to have at least one “veggie” on my plate for every meal. I drink lots of water and I exercise. Like most mothers of young children, I am constantly learning how to fit consistent and effective exercise into my day. Some weeks are better than others, but my reason for doing so is greater than looking better in my jeans – I have other genes I am battling.

Secondly, I am now involved with my local chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA). We are working to spread awareness about heart disease, particularly in women.
Here are some startling facts I learned from the AHA:

  • Heart disease is the NUMBER ONE killer of women, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year.
  • More women die of heart disease than the next 4 causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
  • 90% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
  • 80% of cardiac events in women may be prevented with heart-healthy decision-making.

So, what can you do to help prevent heart disease?

  • Wear red on Friday, February 4th to promote awareness
  • Make healthy decisions (eat well, move more, stop smoking/reduce alcohol)
  • Know your numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose)
  • If you live in the Puget Sound area, come to a “Go Red Connect” event on Saturday, February 5th at Macy’s in Bellevue Square. I will be there. Come say hi! I’d love to see some friendly faces!
  • Visit the “Go Red for Women” website at www.goredforwomen.org. There are TONS of resources there and you can register for your red dress pin to support the cause!
  • Lastly, tell a friend. By sharing our stories with each other, we may be able to change a life.

Jadie and MeI hope my story has inspired you to do something new. Together, we can stop preventable heart disease in our lifetime.

Wishing you a heart healthy day,

Lisa Hwang

Love Crunch: It’s Natural To LOVE, Share It this February!

By Summer:

Can you believe it’s February? I can’t! Since the last month has just flown by I should mention that Valentine’s Day is less than two weeks away! YIKES! Do you have plans for your sweetheart? How will you show your love?

clip_image001Nature’s Path, same company that has brought us Ancient Grains through Costco, is partnering with Whole Foods to offer Love Crunch cereal, but only for a limited time so you’ll want to run out and get yourself a couple boxes!

When I got my box of Nature’s Path Organic Love Crunch I had to open it and try the dark chocolate chunks, raspberry, strawberry, coconut, and flax granola cereal. YUM! Really; this is an eat-from-the-box cereal. Even my 4 year old chose to have it for his snack today. His quote, “You’re right; this is yummy!” I feel confident giving Love Crunch as a snack because all of Nature’s Path products are made of 100% pronounceable ingredients that are natural and/or organic. Love Crunch is USDA certified organic and contain NO artificial preservatives, NO additives, NO genetically modified organism (GMOs) and NO synthetic pesticides.

clip_image003

Nature’s Path would love you to share your love at home and internationally. Love Crunch is not just for your family, but for each box your purchase $1 (up to $25,000; that’s 125 loans of $200) will be donated to the Whole Planet Foundation which lends microcredit — a small loan usually $200 or less, that requires no collateral or contract — to women in order to create or expand an at-home business in order to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. And for at home …

Diane Henderik’s Strawberry Cheesecake

clip_image005

CRUST
13/4 cup Nature’s Path Love Crunch cereal
1/2 cup Nature’s Path Smart Bran cereal
1 tablespoon dark cocoa powder
1/3 cup butter (melted)

CAKE
1/2 cup Lifeway Strawberry Greek Yogurt
4 oz. Lifeway Farmer’s cheese, room temperature
8 oz. low fat cream cheese
1/2 cup sugar
11/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoon whole wheat flour
2 cup pureed fresh strawberries

TOPPING
1 cup Nature’s Path Love Crunch cereal
12 fresh strawberries
fresh mint springs

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350o.
2. Combine cereals and cocoa in blender, process until blended to fine crumbs. Reserve 1/4 cup of crumbs.
3. Return reserved 1/4 cup of crumbs to blender and grind to fine powder. Set aside for garnish when cake is complete.
4. Make the crust: Combine all ingredients for crust in a large bowl. Press into bottom of 9” springform of cake pan and set aside.
5. Make the cake: Combine yogurt, farmer’s cheese and cream cheese in a large bowl. With electric mixer, completely beat in sugar. Beat in vanilla, spices and flour. Stir in pureed strawberries. Pour into pan.
6. Bake for about 11/2 hours or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
7. Remove from oven and let stand 30 minutes.
8. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours before serving.
9. Dust entire top of cake with reserved finely ground cereal and sprinkle Nature Path’s Love Crunch cereal around the edges.
10. Fan slices strawberries in center of cake and place whole strawberry in the middle. Garnish with whole and sliced strawberries and mint sprigs.
11. ENJOY!

Serves 12

My changes (as you can see from the photo) were all about the final touches. I don’t use any mint to garnish and choose to use chocolate chips in between the strawberry slices as well as at the top of the middle, whole strawberry.

Making Home Made Applesauce is Easy Recipe

imageMy husband made this recipe the first time while I was away watching Mars Needs Moms with Disney. You throw all the ingredients in the pot, you don’t even have to peel the apples. I was quite impressed and since I was away, he didn’t have the camera to take any photos with. Well, when I returned we had to make it again as a family this time.

I just participated as the camera girl as they set up an assembly line process.

loving applesauce

Homemade Applesauce Recipe

4 medium Apples
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar (brown or white)
a few flakes of cinnamon (the last batch he let Zoe put in as much as she wanted and it was a lot and it was GOOD)
image

Directions:

Core the apples, peel them if you want to (we don’t)
Cut the apples into quarters
Put everything into a pan
Cover and cook at medium heat for 15 – 20 minutes
LET THE APPLES COOL, then mash them with a fork or potato masher

This recipe was taken from Kids Cooking A Very Slightly Messy Manual (By KLUTZ)

imageMiles did all of the mashing this time. Zoe was still afraid to mash them because the first time they made the homemade applesauce the apples were not cool enough and she burned her hands. It wasn’t bad, it was just enough where she doesn’t want to do it again. Cooking with kids encourages them to try new things. Now, I think almost all kids like applesauce but this is such a simple recipe and an easy way to get the kids excited about being in the kitchen. It’s a great starting point for picky eaters. Start the whole process at the grocery store. Show your kids new things and ask them to pick something out. Then go home and cook it together. Find a way they can help prepare the food and keep them excited as it’s in the oven cooking.  Then try it together. You’ll be quite excited to find how much they are willing to try when they created it.

This post was inspired by the Kids’ Cooking Academy and Frigidaire when you join the Kids’ Cooking Academy between 1/18/11 and 4/25/11 Frigidaire will donate $1 to Save the Children with a minimum of $35,000 and a maximum of $40,000 to help make sure that more children have access to healthy foods. Frigidaire contacted me and asked me to post a cooking with my kids adventure because they have worked with me in the past. I was a Frigidaire test drive mom, testing out their double door refrigerator. I still love it you can see it pictured above holding the apples and carrots. I didn’t get to meet Jennifer Garner like quite a few bloggers did, but hopefully one day when my kids are older we’ll all get to go participate in a kids cooking class with Frigidaire. We were given a gift card for our time and energy! Oh and I can’t forget to mention that everyone that participates in the Kids’ Cooking Academy will be entered for a chance to win the daily prize, a kids’ apron set and the grand prize: a new Frigidaire Double Oven Range! You can enter at Maketimeforchange or Make Time for Change Face book Page . Click here for the official rules.

I have Been SAD Again, More on Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I know it’s crazy, and some of you think, how can a person that just came back from an awesome trip to Hollywood be depressed? But it’s true. I’m depressed again. Last week was worse than this week, I was barely able to function and most everyone that knows me noticed something was wrong and all I could respond with was that I was tired. I actually thought I was just tired, but how much time in bed does it take for someone to no longer feel tired?

A LOT when you’re depressed.

Louise Gnome GardenI wanted to try and write about it last week, but I knew that if there were any adverse comments that I would just start crying, throw my computer across the room and hide under the blankets. So, I just really pulled in and didn’t do much of anything. If it wasn’t for my husband that understands what it’s like to go through ups and downs, I think I would have slid even further than I did.

Seasonal Affective Disorder affects me the most when it’s days of raining, but I really do think I was tired and the combination of being tired, the overcast for a few days, and my kids telling me to go back to work (they love when I go on blogging trips) my brain just took it all and shut down the happiness. Just in case you have no idea what Seasonal Affective Disorder is:

Fall and winter seasonal affective disorder (winter depression)
Winter-onset seasonal affective disorder symptoms include:

  • Depression
  • Hopelessness
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of energy
  • Social withdrawal
  • Oversleeping
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty concentrating and processing information

From the Mayo Clinic

I was tired, depressed, and couldn’t concentrate on anything. All I still want to do is sleep, and even now with the sun out, and a little positive energy is in me, I find it quite difficult to write at all. And the more I put off the writing the more behind I get and it’s an endless downward spiral sometimes, but I’m working on finding my way out. So as you see fewer posts this week, next week I’ll try to be on top of it all. This weekend, I would expect an onslaught of posting as I’m way behind. (still catching up from Christmas AHHHHH).
