Voskos Greek Yogurt Trip To Greece Giveaway

Voskos Greek Yogurt has been a pleasure to work with over the past year. They sent a generous donation to the tweetdrive, and they sent me quite a few Voskos Greek Yogurt products to review back in October. They care quite a bit about healthy eating providing tons of recipes and ways to use Greek Yogurt. Greek Yogurt has a different consistency than regular yogurt. It is thicker without being a custard. It also to me has a different flavor. The Voskos Greek Yogurt flavors are high in protein, contain live and active probiotic cultures and no rBST, rBGH, GMO, and are gluten Free. They can replace sour cream, mayonnaise and cream cheese in many recipes, thus lowering the amount of calories and upping the protein.

Alpha and Omega Support Defenders of Wildlife Giveaway

AO_DVD_ocard_F1.inddMy little Zoe often talks about our recent excursion to The Great Wolf Lodge, She calls it the Great Woof Wolf lodge, it’s an awesome pronunciation and I think they should change their name. Winking smile Because of our visits their we’ve been talking about wolves, how they live and the sounds they make. So when we received a copy of Alpha and Omega from Lionsgate they were excited to see it.

The movie starts off with Kate and Humphrey playing together and having a great time. Then Kate has to go to Alpha school where she will learn how to lead the pack. When they are reunited she tries very hard to stay away from Humphrey because Alphas and Omegas are not allowed to interact. Humphrey just will not have that, so he works very hard to see her and in one of his attempts the two of them are whisked on a journey that changes their lives and the packs lives.

Full Synopsis:

Come along on the ultimate road-trip adventure that will leave the whole family howling with laughter! When Kate, a take-charge “Alpha” wolf, and Humphrey, a laid back “Omega” wolf get snatched by park rangers and relocated halfway across the country, the two must set off on an incredible journey home. With the help of a goofy golfing goose and his quickie duck caddy, Kate and Humphrey won’t let anything stop them – prickly porcupines, grumpy bears, even a speeding locomotive – from getting back to Jasper Park in time to help save their pack from rival wolves. And along the way, Kate and Humphrey learn that even though they are complete opposites, they make a pretty good team! It’s a thousand miles of fun in this wildly entertaining journey the whole pack can enjoy together.Adopt a wolf package

Lionsgate has teamed up with Defenders of Wildlife to offer a special Alpha and Omega-sponsored “Adopt a Wolf” package. In celebration of the release of this paw-some adventure, Defenders of Wildlife these special wildlife saving wolf adoption kits. Green Tip: Staying Warm while Stopping Global Warming CleanFlame Firelog

By Summer:

clip_image002Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. Okay compared to what we’ve had this winter the weather really isn’t currently frightful, but I do appreciate a cozy, warm fire to cuddle up to with my husband … ok let’s be realistic, we’re watching a movie and both working on our computers. But it is a nice start to the evening to be ultra-clean while burning a 100% recycled CleanFlame firelog.

Here’s the deal, I was a skeptic about CleanFlame’s green claims. I had to do my research to find out why these logs were claiming to be environmental. Well, CleanFlame proved themselves to me!

CleanFlame is made from 100% recycled waxed corrugated boxes which aren’t readily recyclable. However, these boxes are vital to our vast produce delivery as these boxes are used for transportation as they are water-tight, high-quality, FDA-approved food-grade, waxed-box containers. (Tongue-tied? Read it again! I’m not trying to trick you but be honest about the true environmental nature of these firelogs.) Though these wax boxes are great for produce they’re not great for the environment as the wax would just sit in a landfill for up to 50 years waiting to decompose.

CleanFlame uses a special system called CleanCycleTM  since wax boxes can’t go through the regular recycling procedure and could actually contaminate the whole process of recycling a batch of plain cardboard. There have been attempts to chemically strip the wax off those boxes but as you can imagine how polluting this is. Though wood is a renewable resource these waxy boxes need to be recycled as over 95% have been going into landfills, about 1.5 MILLION EACH DAY. So in doing this recycling, ClearFlame not only makes clean firelogs and firestarters but they save over 100,000 trees each year. Win-win!

clip_image003

In addition to all this green construction procedures, ClearFlame does NOT use palm oil from plantations in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea to make their logs as they have been linked to human rights abuse, rainforest destruction, and polluting which threatens highly endangered species including the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran elephants and the Orangutan. (In fact other companies are taking notice of these palm oil plantations too; Whole Foods Market will not be selling products with palm oil starting in 2012 without third-party certification that the oil has been sustainably harvested.)

clip_image004

I was so impressed by what I found about CleanFlame. Not just in their manufacturing procedures but CleanFlame is also green enough for cooking and heating. CleanFlame logs are safe enough to cook over as they do not incorporate the toxins found in other brands. The FDA-approved wax boxes they use burn at a high-BTU (British Thermal Unit) that is hot and clean with very mild, candle-like smoke. In an independent test conducted by Omni Consulting Services, Inc. they confirm CleanFlame logs, “burn cleaner and yield greater flame optics and heat per pound than either firewood or other manufactured firelogs.” Due to CleanFlame’s log composition it is even safe to burn more than one log at a time.

For all this green talk, let me share some more green news — you’ll be saving green … YES CASH! Believe it or not CleanFlame is cheaper than other firelog brands. CleanFlame gets their recycling raw materials for a reduced rate and pass that savings onto YOU! You can find Clean Flame retailers on their site; for more information you can also check them out on Twitter @CleanFlame.

So cuddle up or make your s’mores with your CleanFlame blazing!

Summer received samples from CleanFlame in order to create this review. All opinions are her own.

About Summer:

Summer is the President of our Local MOMS Club chapter, she is the mother of two adorable active boys, and is always thinking of ways to help others. Roundabouts: The Fun Way to Have a Cupcake! Giveaway

By Summer:

I love to bake. Love, Love, Love! I’ve been baking since I was in 8th grade or so; I still remember the rainy day that I found one of my mom’s church cookbooks. I flipped it open to the dessert section and baked the day away … then my mom made me walk some goodies to all the neighbors because I had made 6 different types of dessert that our family of four would never eat before they went bad. Baking has always just been fun for me.

clip_image002Now I bake every Monday night for my husband’s team meetings at work on Tuesdays. I have a fun time finding new recipes and making cool things. But don’t let my love of baking convince you that I’m an expert; I’m always needing help and find most of it through my mom friends who seem to have a plethora of baking knowledge. My last experiment was “Margarita Cupcakes” inspired by Roundabouts® and created with the help of AllRecipes.com and my Facebook mommy baker friends.

clip_image004If you find baking just as fun as I do you should investigate Roundabouts’ themed cupcake sleeves which will add fun to an occasion and prevent you from showing up with just plain, naked cupcakes. Choose from many assorted cupcake sleeve themes and sleeve decorations with over 70 designs to choose from you’re sure to find something for your next event. You’ll also never forget to dress your cupcakes as these sleeves – at 81/2” wide x 13/8” – will fit right inside your drawer next to all your other baking accessories such as candles, liners, and sprinkles.

For my cupcake sleeves I chose their “Sweet Margarita” sleeve. I stayed with the theme so people knew what type of cupcake they were getting before their first bite. I made a batch of Lemon-Lime Cupcakes* (which made more than the promised 24 cupcakes – all over flowing). My frosting was 6 cups powdered sugar, 1 8oz package Neufchatel cheese, ½ cup heavy whipping cream, ½ teaspoon sea salt and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. For the “salt” of the margarita glass I used Bob’s Red Mill unsweetened coconut flakes. The straws are just decoration, but the lime is a gummy from the bulk candy section.

* Personal changes: I usually try not to change recipes until I’ve made them as written at least once, however for my preference I made curtain changes. In the cupcakes we don’t keep soda in the house and I didn’t want to purchase any, but we do have Mike’s Hard Lemonade varieties on hand, so I use Mike’s Hard Limeade as a soda substitute.

How Roundabouts are Green:

Roundabout® Sleeves are also doing their part to be environmental, not just cute. There packaging is recyclable and their sleeves are free of solvents, toxic agents, and bleaching chemicals. To learn more about Roundabouts® check their website or the Roundabouts Facebook page or follow them on Twitter @RoundaboutWraps.

Which party or occasion would you use Roundabout® Sleeves for — the Oscars, a birthday, treat day at school or work, the Super Bowl, book club?

LeapFrog DVD’s The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park and LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy Giveaway

LF_AAAP_ocard1.inddI probably let my kids watch way too much TV. I grew up watching TV and so do they. But, we only watch DVD’s which allows me to have a huge amount of control over what they watch. One of my favorites out of all the DVD’s we have are from LeapFrog, so I get quite excited when they launch new DVD’s, games or video games. Earlier last week, two new DVD’s arrived on my doorstep courtesy of Lionsgate: LeapFrog: The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park and LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy. LeapFrog: The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park and LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy were released on January 18, 2011, for the suggested retail price of $14.98 each.  Both titles are also be available on Digital Download.

My kids really do learn from these DVD’s that LeapFrog puts out.

In The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park the kids were singing little a, big a, little b big b. The other day, I put this on for Miles while Zoe was in preschool and he started singing and he looked at me and said, “Come on, sing with me”.

“Mom, sing!”

So, of course I had to sing with him!

LeapFrog Numbers Ahoy_BoxArtThe Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park (Ages 3-6): When their firefly friend, Edison, takes Tad, Lily and Scout to the place of his childhood dreams, the gang is shocked to discover that Alistair Alphabelly’s Amazing Amusement Park is… closed! To make matters worse, Edison has gotten himself stuck atop the Fantastical Ferris Wheel. The only way to save him is to turn on the rides in the park with the magic of the alphabet. Now the children must learn all of the letters, big and small, to save their friend, save the day and perhaps even meet the rhyme master himself, Alistair Alphabelly!

I actually didn’t watch this one, and Zoe kept saying: there is a bad guy on this one, but he’s not too scary, and I kept telling her she was wrong, then finally I realized he was a bad guy because he captured Scout, but he wasn’t too scary, just like Zoe said!

LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy SYNOPSIS
Numbers Ahoy (Ages 3-6): Tad and Lily need a little number sense to help them get through a complicated game. So their magical firefly friend, Edison, takes them on a fantastical journey under the sea! When a pirate mistakenly captures their cute puppy pal Scout, they must use their new understanding of counting, grouping and estimating to rescue him. Join them as they navigate the deep and face foes such as sharks, crab henchmen—even Pirate Pythagoras himself—and begin to see numbers in a whole new way!

Call To Action Breastfeeding Initiative, and my personal experience!

Today, Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin will release her first Call to Action (CTA) with the theme: support breastfeeding. The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and a mother should not be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed. However, the success rate among mothers who want to breastfeed can be greatly improved through active support from their families, friends, communities, clinicians, health care leaders, employers, and policymakers. As such, Dr. Benjamin will call on these sectors of the community to support women who want to breastfeed their babies.

The event Call To Action webcast was held this morning. Be sure to check it out!  To download the Call to Action and other materials, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov.

mom breastfeedingBreastfeeding is hard, it is super hard. In fact, I don’t even think it can be done alone, women need support from others and I needed support from others. When I had my daughter, she was born with the instinct to breastfeed. She seemed to latch and she put on weight right away, but it was painful, super painful. Luckily, I live in an area that is Super PRO breastfeeding. There are 24 hour hotlines I could call for support and I was able to get into a lactation consultant any time. They told me the latch was wrong and we worked to fix it, but it was still painful. So with a further examination we found that Zoe and I were suffering from a yeast infection. Because of that, whenever I was in pain, I went in and found out that I had another yeast infection. Breast feeding was natural for Zoe and I and whenever it was off, with the help of professionals we were able to get right back on target. However, I was also supported by family. If my stepmother had not come up and helped me out for a week after Zoe was born, I never would have succeeded. She cooked for me and did quite a few baby diapers so I could sleep and rest. Between her and all of the professionals I was able to breastfeed Zoe for the first year of her life.

“Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breastfeed,” Dr. Benjamin said. “They shouldn’t have to go it alone. Whether you’re a clinician, a family member, a friend, or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breastfeed.

I completely agree with Dr. Benjamin!

mom caring for kidsMy second child, I was not so successful. I went through quite a bit with his birth, I was left all alone to care for him and his sister and the only support I had were the professionals but I had to reach out to them. Because I was depressed, I didn’t do that. We only lasted one week, or maybe two. He wasn’t putting on weight the way his sister did so I freaked out and put him on formula and then went further into depression because I felt like a failure as a mother. I was not a failure!! I did what was best for my son and I. But I do feel that if I had more support at home I might have had more success. I didn’t have MOMS Club at that time, my family didn’t come up to visit when he was born, and my husband had to go back to work. So I urge women to find a support system when you are pregnant so you are not left alone when your child comes. Breastfeeding is best. But I also urge you to understand that if you choose not to breastfeed or are unable to like I was that you BELIEVE and Realize you are not a failure of a mother.

Dr. Benjamin states, “Of course, the decision to breastfeed is a personal one,” she added, “no mother should be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed.”

While 75 percent of U.S. babies start out breastfeeding, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, only 13 percent are exclusively breastfed at the end of six months.  The rates are particularly low among African-American infants.

Many mothers who attempt to breastfeed say several factors impede their efforts, such as a lack of support at home; absence of family members who have experience with breastfeeding; a lack of breastfeeding information from health care clinicians; a lack of time and privacy to breastfeed or express milk at the workplace; and an inability to connect with other breastfeeding mothers in their communities.

Dr. Benjamin’s “Call to Action” identifies ways that families, communities, employers and health care professionals can improve breastfeeding rates and increase support for breastfeeding:

· Communities should expand and improve programs that provide mother-to-mother support and peer counseling.
· Health care systems should ensure that maternity care practices provide education and counseling on breastfeeding.  Hospitals should become more “baby-friendly,” by taking steps like those recommended by the UNICEF/WHO’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
· Clinicians should ensure that they are trained to properly care for breastfeeding mothers and babies.  They should promote breastfeeding to their pregnant patients and make sure that mothers receive the best advice on how to breastfeed.
· Employers should work toward establishing paid maternity leave and high-quality lactation support programs.  Employers should expand the use of programs that allow nursing mothers to have their babies close by so they can feed them during the day.  They should also provide women with break time and private space to express breast milk.
· Families should give mothers the support and encouragement they need to breastfeed.

Family members can help mother’s prepare for breastfeeding and support their continued breastfeeding, including after her return to work or school.

According to the “Call to Action, breastfeeding protects babies from infections and illnesses that include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. Breastfed babies are also less likely to develop asthma, and those who are breastfed for six months are less likely to become obese.  Mothers themselves who breastfeed have a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Support your loved ones, make a meal, watch their child, or just love them deeply as they go through the transition of being pregnant to being a mother.

Five Benefits for Keeping a Journal by Marlise Karlin

Marlise Karlin has launched "The Stillness Journal" and she has been a guest on Mom Start before. So I was quite happy to share more tips from Marlise with all of you again.

Marlise Karlin Headshot1. Reduces Stress: Journaling allows you to quiet the mind-chatter by writing about your most personal thoughts and true feelings without judgment. It gives you an opportunity to analyze, release and resolve old patterns, frustrations or concerns that are holding you back or causing you stress and anxiety, and to look at issues from a different perspective.

2. Inspires Creativity: The physical act of writing occupies your left brain which frees up your right brain to tap into creativity. Your journal is like an open canvas that inspires you to bring your thoughts, hopes and dreams to life through words and illustration.

3. Clarifies Your Goals: Nothing can solidify your goals and aspirations more than permanently writing them down on paper. Setting an intention and reviewing it consistently draws the energy and strength you need to stay on the path to achieving them.

4. Brings You Peace: When you call upon and connect with that deep well of inspiration that exists in your heart, you experience greater levels of peace, love, compassion, confidence, wisdom and health in your life.

5. Encourages Reflection: Most people spend their entire lives looking for answers outside themselves. By integrating time for journaling and Stillness, you begin to look inside yourself and live from a higher level of consciousness that aligns you with your personal truth.

ABOUT MARLISE KARLIN:
