Reuse A Shoe Three Ways Shoes Can Be Repurposed

So Christmas is over, what did you get? Do you need to pair down? We tried to keep Christmas small around here, but I do need to go through the toys. WOW, seeing all of the presents under the tree made me remember back when I used to have mounds of presents under the tree. Today, Summer has a few tips on how to pair down, especially how to pair down on shoes!

If you got new clothes for Christmas don’t forget to go through your closet to consider clothing for donation to a charity of your choice . But if you got new sneakers and your old ones are not donate able then consider repurposing, reusing, and recycling your old shoes with Nike. They will make your shoes get the kind of game you only wish you had! Your shoes will become an athletic surface — field, track, court, or playground.

Reuse a Shoe LogoNike will take your sneaks (any brand) and grind them up. (yes, they take your used shoes and repurpose them) They use the 3 portions of the shoe for different purposes … or should I say repurposes. First, the rubber from the outsole of the shoe can make track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles, playground surfacing and even new Nike products like shoes or on clothing as buttons and zipper pulls. Then, the foam from the midsole is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, as well as futsal fields. Lastly, fabric from the upper portions is used in the creation of cushioning pads for facilities like indoor synthetic courts and wood courts.

You just need to turn those shoes in to any Nike store or certified Nike collection center or mail them into Nike. Be sure you adhere to their guidelines to help them cut down on waste — both time in sorting and literally trash of shoes they can’t recycle.
Even if you didn’t get new tennis shoes consider going through your family’s stock pile for out grown or old shoes just lying around and turn them into Nike so they get used. Come on … Just Do It! (Okay, that was cheesy, but you get the point.)

Donate Used Christmas, Birthday, Easter and All Occasion Greeting Cards to St. Jude’s

St. Jude's Ranch LogoI was just looking at all of the cards that I received this year for Christmas. This is the largest collection of cards I have received in quite a few years. The kids even received a few cards of their own. I was just starting to gather up my cards for recycling when I received this idea from Summer.

For all those Christmas cards you’ll be recycling in the bin in a few days consider a different alternative. Turn your card fronts into St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. You simply take your Christmas cards and cut the card front from the back. Mail 5” x 7” or smaller card fronts, free of clip_image002writing on the back, to St. Jude’s so they can recycle the cards as new for next year’s Christmas as a charity sold card. St. Jude’s can’t accept cards by Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting. To keep green all year long, keep St. Jude’s in mind as they take Birthday cards, Thank You cards, Easter cards, and All Occasion greeting cards.

You can mail your donations to:
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children
Recycled Card Program
100 St. Jude’s Street
Boulder City, NV 89005
877-977-SJRC (7572)

Sounds like a great idea. Who knew you could donate greeting cards, donate Christmas Lights, or donate Snowflakes?

Thank you Summer for helping us make a difference in our environment and give to charity at the same time!! I love being green!

Got Boxes?

imageWe all have tons of boxes the day after Christmas right? Well, what are you going to do with them?

Before you recycle your packaging and boxes, make them into toys for your kids. Make boxes into cars that your kids can sit in or kitchens by stacking boxes. Make large boxes into a house by adding windows and a door or connect boxes to make a house. There’s that old joke about not giving the child a toy, just the box … well give them both. I promise they’ll love it. Be creative! Merry Christmas!

When I was growing up, every year after we put up the Christmas Tree, my dad let me have the Christmas tree box. Instead of putting it in storage over the Christmas Holiday Season, I would color on it, hide in it and pretend it was my magical fort. Then when it was time to put the Christmas tree away, my dad would tape up the box and put the tree away. I loved just playing in the box it was tons of fun and great for my dad.

Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday

We were delivering cookies to all of the neighbors a week ago and at every house we went to my son said,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I told him that he should be saying, Merry Christmas, so then he would smile and say Merry Christmas, but as soon as we got to the next house it was

Happy Birthday all over again.

He said it with as much enthusiasm as Frosty the Snowman did when they put that magic hat on him. I mean, Miles is after all only 2 (going on 3). We’ve been reading the Christmas Story every night before we go to bed this week and it dawned on me it’s Jesus’ birthday so my son was right all along. Happy Birthday Jesus

This morning when I got up, I said Merry Christmas Eve to my husband and he smiled at me and said,

Happy Birthday!

Miles and Zoe Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from the Bishop Family and We wish Jesus a very Happy Birthday!

Zoe and Miles and Hasbro helped me with Toys For Tots

I always miss the deadline for donating toys for the Maltby Food Bank, and toys keep coming even when I do remember to make the deadline. So we had more toys I wanted to give away before Christmas. Some of the toys came from Hasbro and you can see a list and description of those toys listed below.

Other toys came from My Share the Joy Experience with Zoe.

And then of course I had some toys left over from BlogHer 2010. I was planning on giving them to Zoe and Miles but after all the presents from Grandma and Papa, and Grandma Mimi and Pawpaw, and from Gran, well the kids had more than enough presents under the tree so Andrew and I decided to even give some of the toys we purchased to charity along with what I received at Blogher 10.

I feel very blessed to have been chosen for so many different giving campaigns and was happy to work in others of my own choice. I worked the Seattle Tweet Drive, Random Acts of Zhu, Land’s End Share the Joy, Operation Christmas Child and gave to Toys for Tots, I’ll also be making a large donation to the Maltby Food Bank when they re-open in January (I messed up on that one, I never thought about the fact they would be closed over the Christmas Break…OOPS) !

Check out Miles and Zoe giving the toys to Charity!

We dropped off the toys at Toys R Us a drop off for Toys for Tots.

These are the toys that Hasbro sent us: They sent us the Play-Doh Mega Fun Factory (which was hard for me to give away), and Adventure Heroes Hero On The Go Playset, and an Explore ‘n Grow Musical Gear Center. Thank you Hasbro for helping us help others have a Merry Christmas.

To complete the fantastical FUN FACTORY experience, kids can display and "sell" their creations on a colorful playmat featuring a toy shop theme on one side and a candy store theme on the other side. Regift on Boxing Day is OK, what about Regifting for Christmas

imageLast minute gifting on your mind? Look no further than December 26, Boxing Day. Though the origins of Boxing Day are debatable depending on the country of the person you talk with about it; I’ll tell you what I was taught. The day after Christmas the bourgeoisie would regift presents. Either new ones they didn’t want (or they would give used items in decent condition) in Christmas’s boxes and paper to their house workers. So be green and celebrate by regifting the things you don’t want to people who would really like them. No need to wait for Boxing Day!

From Summer

Other thoughts on Boxing Day:

The tradition has long included giving money and other gifts to those who were needy and in service positions. The European tradition has been dated to the Middle Ages, but the exact origin is unknown and there are some claims that it goes back to the late Roman/early Christian era; metal boxes placed outside churches were used to collect special offerings tied to the Feast of Saint Stephen.

From Wiki!

My thoughts on regifting:

I see nothing wrong with regifting. Just make sure you don’t give the gift that someone gave you to someone else in front of them. They might be insulted.

Let Me Bing You a Fresh Christmas Dinner

Only Two Days left until Christmas, are you thinking about your Christmas Meal Yet. I was reading my friend’s Holiday Courses and man, I want to go to her house this year because I have no plans!! Summer has some great ideas for us on making sure that our Fresh FoodChristmas meal is fresh, and if you want it fresh of course you still have time to run out and find those fresh ingredients.

It’s time to start purchasing the food for your Christmas dinner; head to your farmer’s market and purchase local ingredients. Pay a visit to a local butcher for your meats. If you don’t know of local places than Bing them. Once you find one source of local and fresh, finding other sources should be easier as you can ask the shop or other shopper for referrals; chances are these places are in the know of other fresh sources as their concern is local and health foods.

If you don’t have a close year round local farmer’s market than check the signs at your grocery store or labels on fresh food. Think about how far it had to travel to get to your table. If you can’t find these details in your store ask the grocer in the fruit and vegetable department for these details.

Funny Side Note: I had to use this title because my husband brought me a cup of coffee this morning, in a Bing Coffee Mug and he said, let me Bing you your coffee.

Random Acts of Zhu Visited the Seattle Tweet Drive

It wasn’t until I was reading Random Acts of Zhu Blessing in A Backpack on my friend Connie’s site that I realized Zhu Zhu chose 100 bloggers to participate in Random Acts of Zhu.

“The makers of Zhu Zhu Pets and Kung Zhu, Cepia, LLC, chose 100 bloggers to donate 104 Zhu Zhu Pets to local non-profits that provide toys to needy children.”

The Assignment:

We (the bloggers) were provided with 104 Zhu Zhu Pets. Do that math (100 x 104) 10,400 were given to charity! OH My for Charity! We were told to give them to a charity that means something to us and share our experience.

Miles Holding Zhu Zhu Pets

My Experience was amazing, and helped lead to over 330 toys being donated to Treehouse in Seattle. I wrote about the Seattle Tweet Drive previously. Club Sur donated the venue and food. It was a fun night where fellow tweeters tweeted for charity!

imageimage

The Result:

Here are the toys:

These toys are now with Treehouse. Treehouse is a charity for Orphans and Foster Families who need extra support in our community. The children will actually be allowed to go shopping and pick out what they want.

imageimage

The most challenging part of giving all of the Zhu Zhu pets away was explaining to my 2 year old, who LOVES these critters, that he can’t keep any of them.

Thank you Zhu Zhu and Cepia, LLC for allowing us to partake in such a wonderful giving campaign!
