Turn Homemade Snowflakes into a Charity Event

During the snow storm that we had we were stuck inside a little bit more just because of how very cold it was. So we got out the art supplies and made snowflakes, according paper snowman and home made Christmas Trees. We had quite a bit of fun making all of these crafts. The kids were allowed to use scissors and markers and to Zoe that is a very very special day.

snowflakeNow we’re using our snowflakes as a decoration in our windows by the dinner table but did you know you can do other things like donating your flakes to charity. What? Read today’s red and green eco tip for today:

Decorating for the winter can be snow much fun, no matter where you live, as long as you have the right tools. So leave the blowers off and keep the shovel parked; gear up with your scrape paper and scissors and make your own indoor blizzard. Need some help? Never fear! Check out The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for some guidance. You can even step up your efforts by making your fun project a fundraiser for The Hole in the Wall Gang with offers camps for seriously ill children. Schools and clubs simply create as many flakes as possible and sell them for a fee. Purchasers can either take them home to decorate with or their flake can be displayed like other paper fundraisers in the stores for Children’s Hospital, Jerry’s Kids, March of Dimes, or Walk for MS. If you want to carve up some scrap paper to make a different kind of green ($$$) difference then consult the camp’s site.

So have fun with the kids and make a difference!

Find Your Holiday Needs at Collections Etc Giveaway

Collections Etc LogoWow, once Thanksgiving is over the Holidays are left and right. It seems like a party is scheduled here and a party is scheduled there and my lack of organization has me overbooked, how about you? I can’t believe that my kids are going to be in their first Christmas production, well, lucky Zoe gets to be in two. And I’ve signed up to bake cookies for them. With a party on the same night as one of them oh my!

I know this is my life from now on and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. What could you use to make all of the Holiday hustle easier?

Consider Collections Etc for your Holiday needs. From hundreds of amazing decorative items to all of your bake ware needs, all hand-picked to let you surround yourself with style and creativity. Collections Etc. is a leading catalog company and online retailer that’s been in business for more than 40 years.  They have thousands of affordable, unique gift, home décor and garden products—most of which are $19.99 or less (great for this tough economy). From seasonal and baking to gardening and goofy, Collections Etc. has something for everyone on your gift list!

Cookie Cake PansThis year, I’ve been really into baking. I’ve already made 9 pies, 8 of them were Pumpkin and 1 was Butternut Squash. I’ve made quite a few different breads too, and it’s been terrible for my hips but quite a delight to my taste buds. I finally figured out that I need to share at least half of what I bake with the neighbors. Collections ETC sent me the  Cookie Sandwich Shaped Cake Pans to review.

I just received these pans and haven’t had a chance to use them yet but my daughter’s birthday is next month and I know it will be fun to make her cake in these pans. Who doesn’t want a great big cookie as their birthday cake? The only negative would be that they are not dishwasher safe. I hate washing pans by hand, but they are nonstick!

Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum

Have you ever put off a product review because you wanted to make sure you did a really really good job. That’s exactly what I’ve done with this review for a skin care product by Triderma. Triderma sent me the Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum for review and one to giveaway to one of my readers. I wanted to do a video review but alas, I really am out of time and way overdo on this review, and I’m about to go out of town on yet another blogging trip so here goes! I promise to do my best Triderma because you do after all deserve it. What a great product!

Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age SerumTriderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum is one of the first products I have used on my face that hasn’t caused my face to burn in a long time. I’m not really supposed to review skin care products just because most of them make my face burn. The Pore Reducing Anti-Age serum did not. WOW, that’s one plus right there.

Want to know why I took the risk on this product?

Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum made some very great claims…

This medical strength creamy serum works like a skin primer but does more than just "fill in" pores. It instantly provides smoother, more refined skin PLUS daily use helps reduce the size of pores to give you a more confident complexion. It helps control excess oil throughout the day leaving skin feeling silky soft. Clinically proven, fast acting RefinaPore™ provides dramatic results without irritating skin.

*NO Cortizone or Parabens

*Fragrance Free

My favorite claim of these:

Clinically proven, fast acting RefinaPore™ provides dramatic results without irritating skin.

Why Do I like Triderma:

Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum won my heart because it did not burn my face. I have yet to see results, but I have yet to use it consecutively for more than 2 days at a time as it is. My biggest weakness with any regimine is sticking to it. I really should learn to take better care of my face so my New Years Resolution will be to put Triderma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum to the test. I mean, the first step was for there to be no burn. The second step will be to see my HUGE honking Pores to actually shrink in size. That will take time but I can’t wait.

Thank you to the Family Review Network and to Triderma for sending me samples for this review.

Fantasia Fantasia 2000 Blu-Ray 10.00 Off Coupon and Review

Fantasia first came out in 1940 by the animated film producer Walt Disney and was a failure. That’s hard to believe with how popular and beautiful the beloved musical creation has become. It is now known and loved so much it is considered to be a Disney Classic. There were quite a few changes made and variations on it some were completely pulled, but the classic we all know and love is quite a delight to watch and now with the magic of Blu-ray I’m able to share it with my kids. You can share it with yours too, and save 10.00 on Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 at Disney Movie Rewards.

clip_image001

Fantasia Fantasia 2000 Movie Box ArtOn November 30th, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released FANTASIA/FANTASIA 2000: 2-Movie Collection Special Edition. We can experience the magical legacy of Disney all over again and some of Fantasia 2000 is from the original creation of Fantasia made by Walt. The unique combination of music and animation in FANTASIA and FANTASIA 2000 broke the boundaries of imagination. With the release of Fantaisa and Fantasia 2000 you can, as I will, introduce the kiddos to the animated musicals and dig deeper into the history of Disney with bonus material that includes a tour of the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, CA and the highly acclaimed Walt Disney & Salvador Dali animated-short film collaboration, Destino! Available for the first time ever on Blu-ray, the seven minute film is the result of a unique collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali begun in 1946, but put on hold due to studio financial concerns. In 2003, Roy E. Disney worked with a team of modern day animators to complete the film as a tribute to Walt’s pioneering artistic vision. Accompanying the highly anticipated short is an all-new feature length documentary entitled “Dali & Disney: A Date With Destino,” which explores the origins of the relationship between Disney and Dali, their collaboration on Destino, and ultimately how the film came to fruition so many years after its inception.

I have always loved watching Fantasia. I haven’t shown the kids Fantasia yet, when we put the movies in we started off with Fantasia 2000 and it had Mickey and the Socerer’s apprentice on it. Miles was so happy to see Mickey. He said

“Look Mom, it’s Mickey…  I Like Mickey Mom”

Zoe said,

“mom, what’s Mickey doing?”

He’s working I said,

“why mom”

and I didn’t really know what to say

Needless to say though, the kids loved watching all of the fanciful scenes, creatures dancing, and music playing. There was one scene though that both of the kids said was too scary. There was umm water I think, or something like Mother nature, and a very evil naughty volcano that hurt her and the forest. Wow, it was intense for the kids but overall, we really liked Fantasia 2000.

Fantasia DVD Bonus Features:

•    New Audio Commentary with Disney historian Brian Sibley
•    Disney Family Museum (running time: approx. 5 minutes) – Walt’s daughter Diane Disney-Miller takes viewers on a tour of the new Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, California featuring a very large exhibit on Fantasia and most importantly, the Schultheis notebook with long lost Fantasia production notes found in more recent years in the walls of a convent.

Fantasia Blu-ray Bonus Features: Everything on the DVD plus:

•    Disney View – This viewing mode maximizes the Blu-ray viewing experience with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. Original artwork created by a Disney artist, in a style that complements the beauty of the film.
•    The Shultheis Notebook: A Disney Treasure (running time: approx. 14 minutes) –An in depth look at the recently discovered Schultheis Notebook. The detailed log was created by Herman Schultheis, an effects man on Fantasia, and intricately breaks down the film from a technical view. Many of the special effects used in Fantasia were a mystery to modern day animators until this notebook was recovered.
•    Interactive Art Gallery and Screensavers – Viewers can explore the artwork of Fantasia as never before, in HD resolution with unique Blu-ray interactivity and programming.
•    Audio Commentaries from Fantasia Legacy Collection o With executive producer Roy E. Disney, conductor James Levine, animation historian
John Canemaker, and Scott McQueen, manager of film restoration.

Audio commentary with interviews and story note recreations by Walt Disney, hosted by John Canemaker.

Fantasia 2000 DVD Bonus Features:

•    Musicana – Walt’s Inspiration for a Sequel (running time: approx. 10 minutes) – This documentary reveals rarely-seen art created for Musicana, a late 1970’s project intended as a Fantasia sequel with a focus on exploring other cultures via their greatest musical compositions. Viewers are offered a look at the origins of pieces that were started by Walt, such as “The Emperor and the Nightingale” which was then taken over by a very young John Lasseter. Ultimately, Musicana was stopped to begin production on “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” but the memories of this piece still live on with the animators who conceived it.

Fantasia 2000 Blu-ray Bonus Features: Everything on the DVD plus:

•    Dali & Disney: A Date With Destino (running time: 82 minutes) – This feature length documentary explores the collaborative relationship between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali, revealing how and why the Destino short came to fruition under the lead of Roy E. Disney in 2003 so many years after its inception in 1946.
•    Destino (running time: approx. 7 minutes) – The legacy of Walt Disney and Salvador Dali lives on in this highly anticipated short film.
•    Disney’s Virtual Vault — BD-Live Feature Original DVD Bonus Features from Legacy Collection
•    Audio Commentaries from Fantasia Legacy Collection (total running time: 84 minutes) With executive producer Roy E. Disney, conductor James Levine, and producer Don Ernst. Audio commentary with the directors and art directors for each segment.

Red and Green Tip of the Day Adopt an Animal

Adopting an animal can be very satisfying and although not all of us are cut out for taking them home there are other ways to take care of animal in our world. Check out the tips that Summer has for us today on spreading the love Abbyadopting animals in different ways.

· Zoo – Through most local zoos or aquariums you can adopt an animal that you don’t have to potty train not to pee on your new carpet. By adopting these animals you get to support these local zoo or aquarium establishments. Many are non-profit and rely on grants and patron gifts. Your receiver will typically get a photo of the adopted animal with a bio. This is a fun gift for any animal lover. Here is the link to my local zoo, Woodland Park Zoo, though zoos around the country offer the same programs if you wish to adopt from a zoo more local to you, just Bing “adopt a zoo animal” for better results add the city of your closest zoo.

· Wild – Thanks to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) people can adopt and support animals in the wild. You might not get to see your animals on a regular basis like you could with a zoo or aquarium adoption, but at a minimum you do receive a certificate, info card, and photograph of your animal.

· In Home – Chose from one of two options from Petfinder:
- Keep a Pet – Bring home an animal to add to your family. By adopting an animal you’re saving its life from death row, a concrete cell, or from never knowing the love of a real family.
- Foster a Pet – Bring home an animal for only the holiday season so that an animal without a home is offered a warm place and good meal for Christmas. Many animals are in need of love; No one wants to be lonely for the holidays, not even an animal. If a permanent home is not currently an option, then take a trial run. This will also offer parents a way to see whether or not your child is responsible enough to care for a pet. Animal Foster places and other animal options can also be found through Petfinder.

We just purchased Abby from a dog breeder, but we have had tons of success in the past with the Humane Society in Bellevue. They have a great facility there and mutts are the sweetest dogs.

Progresso Soup Gift Package Giveaway

Have you seen the hilarious Progresso Soup can commercials? They have top chef’s calling and finding out how to make great soup using the Progresso can phones. They made me laugh, and when MyBlogSpark said they were going to send me a Progresso phone, I didn’t understand what they were sending until it actually arrived. They sent me two cans, cleaned, empty and a hole cut in the bottom of them with a string tying them to each other. I forgot all about this kind of cup phone. We used to use plastic cups, what did you use? So I let the kids play with the phone, it only works if the cord is actually taunt. The fun with the phone was short lived because they actually started whacking each other with their phone. Not sure where that came from but it ended.

I actually have a lot of Progresso soup in my cupboard already, General Mills has excellent sales at Albertsons and it is very easy to get the soup next to nothing in price. I probably paid 40 cents a can that day, which I think is a good price for a can of Progresso Soup. Here is a rundown of a few of their soup groups!

Green Gift Wrap Ideas

December 4th means tip number four from Summer’s Red and Green Holiday Season here on Mom Start. Have you ever really thought about all of the trash that Christmas amounts too? Christmas wrapping paper, packages, and more packages. Summer has a few ideas on how to wrap up those gifts and save the environment.

kids pink envirosaxRethink your wrapping! It’s fun and very memorable to wrap a child’s gift and have them rip it open with excitement, but here is my gift wrapping suggestion … BAG IT!

* Using a simple gift giving bag with tissue paper is a great way to reduce waste. Hopefully the recipient will reuse it, as will subsequent receivers, and when the bag and tissue paper become unusable the final recipient can recycle them.

* Buy or make cloth bags. For children, Santa can leave their sack which you can "mail back" or leave in the stocking for Santa’s elves to claim if you wish to continue this green tradition year after year. For adults, bag it with something they can continue to use such as an Envirosax®, ReUsies®, or even a purse or traveling makeup bag.

* Cloth bag patterns can be found for free online if you’re crafty, but if not support local businesses by buying locally produced wares. This makes your purchase even better for the environment by cutting long distance transportation costs such greenhouse gases and emissions.

I love to use the newspaper, or my children’s artwork as gift wrap. I think it’s a great touch for the grandparents and it’s a good way to pass on the art. Just remember to recycle all of the paper you can this year, that’s the first step.
