Kids are bugging out over the Hexbug Nano Party

The kids and Daddy enjoyed setting up the Hexbug Nano Habitat. We’ve played with other electronic toys before and have found this one even though the pieces are small is much more suited to children than the other. The Zoe and Miles both loved playing with the bugs and Miles took his bug everywhere with him for three days. Yes, in that time we had to replace the battery a few times because he would forget to turn it off. As we were playing the Hexbug Nano bugs my husband noticed that some of them said that they were special or rare. So he went looking on line and found the Hexbug Nano Field Guide.

imageimageimageimageimageimage

The habitat was easy enough for Zoe, age 3, to put together and take apart. She actually did most of the construction on the habitat you see pictured above. Everyone that came over for the party was allowed to take home some bugs and extra batteries. We had quite a fun party last week with the little Hexbug Nano bugs. Everyone had a great time. I’ve received comments from all of the moms thanking me for sending home the little creatures!

One Mom Said,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting the boys spend some time at your house this morning!  They had a great time and love the bugs you sent home with them.  They’ve been playing with them all day; it’s been a while since they were all this quiet at one time.  :)

Another Said,

Louise, thanks so much for the bugs. My kids had SO MUCH FUN playing with them all night!!

And one other mom said,

I’m very impressed with the Hexbugs because they kept my son’s attention for at least 30 minutes. He just sat there and played with the bug watching it go in and out of the habitat.

Every time I try to edit this video my computer crashes so it is a little bit longer than I’m sure any of you other than grandparents like to watch. This video is of the family enjoying the Hexbug Nano for the first time.

Thanks to Mom Select and Hexbug Nano for supplying us with the toys for this party.

This Week on the Evenflo blog!

This week they posted another one of my articles. I’ve really enjoyed writing for Evenflo and I’m working on my next set of articles for them. Their blog is about Savvy Parenting put together by a few different bloggers out there. I’m excited to say I know a few of them and have worked with them on other campaigns. Check out Keeping Your Cool!

imageThe heat you feel as you watch your child pull the toilet paper roll off the wall and then proceed to run though the house with it after managing to get parts of it wet is enough to make any mom go crazy. I try to stay calm by taking a deep breath or counting to 10, but my children know my pressure points. They push me to my breaking point so I have to make sure that I take care of myself and so s… [More]

What exactly is the big deal with High Fructose Corn Syrup?

If you have any doubt about how I feel about HFCS check out my update on HFCS.

High Fructose Corn Syrup suddenly became a bad word in the food industry. People don’t want to buy anything that has HFCS as an ingredient but what I’ve never been able to understand is why? The Corn Refiners Association has launched a campaign to educate the public about HFCS and to dispel common sugar myths that stem from the misperception that HFCS is high in fructose. To see the sugar content of certain foods, visit: http://www.collectivewizdom.com. I had the opportunity to work with Mom Central and be apart of a HFCS Blog Tour. Those of us that participated were able to listen to experts in nutrition and eating healthy discuss what has everyone riled up about HFCS.

cornThe Experts:

John White, Ph.D. President White Technical Research: Dr. White is one of the foremost experts in high fructose corn syrup, the result of 29 years of research of this sweetener.

James M. Rippe, M.D. Professor of Biomedical Sciences University of Central Florida and Founder and Director Rippe Lifestyle Institute. Sr. Rippe is one of the leading authorities on preventitive cardiology, health and fitness and healthy weight loss in the United States.

Audrae Erickson, President Corn Refiners Association: The Corn refiners association is the national trade association representing manufacturers of sweeteners, starches, oils and other products made from corn.

Kristine Clark, Ph. D, R.D., F.A.C.S.M. Director of Sports Nutrition Penn State University.

Types of Sweetener:

  • Agave
  • Brown sugar or granulated white sugar
  • Cane juice, cane syrup, and cane juice crystals
  • Confectioners’ sugar
  • Corn sweeteners and corn syrup
  • Dextrose, Fructose, Glucose, Lactose, Maltose, or Sucrose
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Honey
  • Invert sugar
  • Malt syrup
  • Molasses
  • Stevia
  • Syrup

Here are a few of the questions asked and their answers!

What is the safest sugar for kids?

As we discussed during the webinar, all of the nutritive sweeteners (e.g. the sweeteners that contain calories) are metabolized and absorbed the same way.  Thus, there is no “safer” sugar for kids when you compare sucrose (table sugar), High Fructose Corn Syrup, honey, molasses, or concentrated fruit juices.  All are approximately 50% glucose and 50% fructose.  They all contain the same number of calories, have the same sweetness, and are absorbed and metabolized the same way in human beings.  Of course, all children and adults should consume added sugars in moderation, but there is no safety issue with any of them.
Incidentally, issues of safety are regulated in our country by the Food and Drug Administration.  All of the sugars that I have mentioned have been approved for human consumption by the FDA.

Can you please explain what benefits, if any, there are in using a "natural" sweetener, over regular sugar?

As mentioned earlier in my overview, all of the nutritive (caloric) sweeteners we used are comprised of approximately equal amounts of fructose and glucose.  Though a great deal is made about the "natural" or "not natural" origins of food ingredients, fructose is fructose and glucose is glucose as far as your body is concerned – it can’t tell fructose from one source or another.  And as far as the US Food and Drug Administration is concerned, HFCS and sucrose are both natural sweeteners. So, I don’t think there’s an appreciable difference between natural and regular sweeteners.

My kids love canned fruit, but they seem to be swimming in syrup.  Are there alternatives?

Answer:  Canned fruit is nutritious and can be purchased in it’s own juice.  To avoid extra calories from either juice or syrup, canned fruit can be placed in a collander and drained.  You can purchase canned fruit in lite syrups too and rinse them with water to reduce remaining syrup after draining.  One of the best reasons for buying canned fruit is the fact that you can use it at any time and it never spoils – one of the biggest reasons people tell me they don’t buy fruit is that they forget about it sitting in the refrigerator and it spoils.  Canned and dried fruits are two examples of being able to have fruit at your fingertips with no worries about spoilage.  Canned fruits are usually softer than fresh fruits which can make them easier to chew and swallow for children or anyone with poor dentition.  The key point, canned fruits can be just as nutritious as fresh fruits.

My Question:

My Main concerns is what is everyone so worked up over when it comes to HFCS? People believe that HFCS is making Americans fat. All research and experts agreed that Americans are just eating too much. 85%of diet-conscious women believe being overweight and obese have to do with Americans eating too much and getting too little exercise. It is not the amount of HFCS in food, it is the quantity of the food. I know for a fact that I could not lose any weight after my second pregnancy until I taught myself how to eat the proper serving size for my body and activity level. Try using a smaller plate instead of trying to cut out a certain type of sugar from your diet.

Other  Exercise  Ideas:

Take the stairs instead of the elevator

Park further away and walk to your destination

10-15 minutes strength training 2-3 times per week.

With HFCS getting such a bad rap, it has been considered that corn sugar become the name of HFCS. Will changing the name of high fructose corn syrup to just corn sugar help?

Would you be more likely to buy Corn Syrup instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Since most people believe that high Fructose Corn Syrup is high in Fructose; which isn’t true, would people believe that corn syrup is completely natural?

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of the Corn Refiners Association. I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Spin Master Presents Olivia Plush and 2-in-1 Transforming Playset

Last time I went to the book store to pick out some books for Zoe and Miles and picked up a lot of bargain books. One of them was Olivia, I didn’t realize until we got home that the book was a Spanish reading book. The kids recognize Olivia and it’s fun to look at even though we don’t know Spanish, but now I know why it was on clearance and why there were 20 more behind it. Winking smile. Olivia is too cute to pass up!

Olivia the cute pig from the storybooks you might read to your children, hopefully yours is in the language you can read and speak, is now featuring her own toy line. From the best-selling children’s book and hit Nick Jr. television show, Olivia inspires kids everywhere to think boldly and follow their dreams. Spin Master has taken Olivia’s bold personality and extraordinary imagination, and infused it into a collection of fun and creative toys for children ages 4 and up!

Zoe wasn’t exactly in the mood to help me review the toys today so as I was trying to capture a photo of her she snuck away out of the camera view. She all but threw a fit though when I told her it was time to put the Olivia the pig toys away. So here is our review!

The Olivia Plush:

 IMG_5401

IMG_5402

The Olivia Plush is a line of dolls not just the one you see above. There are four dolls in the series all of them Olivia, but some of the Olivia Dolls are dressed up in costume. At Toys R Us, Olivia retails for 10.99. Olivia Basic Plush Doll – Olivia the ArtistOlivia Basic Plush Doll – Olivia the Artist, Olivia Basic Plush Doll – Cow, our favorite of course is Olivia Basic Plush Doll – Ball GownShe is soft and cuddly and is great for creative play.

The 2-in-1 Transforming Olivia Playset:IMG_5400

Oliviahouse

IMG_5399

The 2 in 1 Transforming Playset is quite a playset. Since it comes with stickers, it’s a winner right off the bat, Zoe loves, loves loves stickers. I haven’t watched Olivia in quite a while, but I hear that the house is just like the one she lives in on TV, it also transforms into a pirate ship, and Zoe was all about opening up the house. The final selling point for our family would be that it has a handle and can be loaded up with all of the accessories and carried from location to location, perfect for kids that love to carry something around like mine do. Zoe has been loading a bag, box or purse since she was 18 months old.

The Olivia Plush and the 2-in-1 Transforming Playset are available at ToysRus, Target and Kmart! For more information on the new product line visit www.spinmaster.com.

3M Filtrete Water Station Review

3M is a brand that is near and dear to my heart. 3M makes the Nexcare brand that creates these wonderful ear plugs that are the only ones that do not hurt my ears and help me to sleep at night. 3M also makes quite a few filters for heating units, we use a ton of 3M products, I would even say that their brand of band aids are my favorite because they actually stay on for a good deal of time. Now they have used their filtering process to create not one glass of water but four glasses of water all at once. This unique system was featured at BlogHer. We were provided with a cup to keep and anytime we needed water we would just go up to the filter and get a glass of water.

At our old house the water was NASTY. So we’re really familiar with water filtering. I like the Filtrete because it is so fast and the water bottles do not take up a lot of room in the fridge. That would be my biggest complaint of any of the other water filtering systems that we have tried. Also, I don’t have to hold the refrigerator door open to get cold water, just grab a bottle and go!

filtreteThe filter lasts longer, filtering two and a half times more water than traditional pitcher filters. This means the filter filters about 100 gallons for approximately three months The 3M Filtrete Water Station includes a three month filter change indicator that shows when it’s time to change the filter. I love when something tells me I need to replace it.  Reduces sediments and chlorine taste and odor from tap water . As I mentioned above the Filtrete Water Filter station includes four, 16.9 ounce bottles that are dishwasher safe, BPA free and include a leak proof cap. In a house with kids that run off with things, it’s nice having a water bottle that is leak proof. Another huge bonus for me is that if we do decide to get new parts, the filter housing is recyclable with #2 plastics (Check with your local recycler, we can recycle number 2). Save up to 3,000 bottles of water per year.

When Anxiety Attacks

First off I have to say, I don’t have full blown panic attacks. I have a blogging friend who told me about her experience and you would be amazed at her perseverance and be surprised if I told you who she was, but that’s her story not mine. I don’t throw up, or take full time medication but sometimes I wonder if maybe I should. I suffer from anxiety and seasonal depression and guess what, the weather in Washington has changed! The rain and cloudy gloominess of winter has sprung.

imageI also have to consider the fact that I had a hysterectomy 9 months ago and everyone that has had one told me that it takes at least a year for my hormones to level out. Well, in all honesty I feel like they are getting worse instead of getting better. Perhaps, it’s just a combination of no sunshine, hormones, and a two year old with full on terrible twos. I find myself between tears and my own temper tantrums directed at the kids.

Yesterday, my anxiety was so bad that I called my husband after dropping my daughter off and just felt like crying. I told him I was having a terrible day and he could hear in my voice that I was holding back the tears. He told me to pick him up early from work, but he had to stay at least a half day. My son is at a point in his life where he’s learning boundaries and pushing them all to the very max. He doesn’t listen to a word I say and when I get louder, he just gets louder. My daughter seems to just feed off of my moods and yesterday that wasn’t a good thing.

I find anxiety to be almost debilitating and I know that it is mild compared to what some people have. I’m not doubled over in pain, sometimes I get stress headaches but nothing too serious. I stress over all kinds of things. The blog, the kids, friends new and old, everything crosses my mind and when it’s one of those days, everything hits me all at once. All I can do is worry! Lately, I haven’t been in the mood to write up my reviews, and getting further and further behind has been causing me lots of anxiety.

Anxiety causes me to worry, then get angry, then cry, then shut down. Then I don’t want to do anything. Then that turns into depression. Luckily, yesterday, my husband was able to come home from work so I could have some time to myself and de-stress for a while. Sometimes, if I have a drink of something then it helps me to calm down and yesterday I did that. I also have a prescription for Xanax that I use as needed. These are two methods that I use to help myself calm down and keep from freaking out too badly. Does that make me weak?

I’m sharing my experience, not only to help myself by putting it all out there, but also to share with others so you all know that it’s ok if you have anxiety or depression. From time to time, an event will happen in my life that is so big I have to actually go beyond just taking Xanax to taking an anti-depression medication. Taking medicine is something that I struggle with. My father hates taking medicine and never pushed it on me, and I just feel like I can do without it. I hear that’s quite common for people that struggle with depression and anxiety to try to go without taking anything.

I know there are other things to try like having some mommy time to myself, or getting a sitter and spending time alone with my husband. What are your ideas on dealing with anxiety? Do you have anxiety?
