Still Time to Host some Children this Summer: Fresh Air Fund

The Summer of 2010 is almost over, but The Fresh Air Fund still needs loving host families. They are looking for families in the following areas to host Red Hook, Columbia County, Saugerties, Delmar, Guilderland & Altamont, Latham and Rensselaer, NY.  If you or someone you know is able to host, please sign up now.

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund‘s Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

The majority of Fresh Air children are from low-income communities. These are often families without the resources to send their children on summer vacations. Most inner-city youngsters grow up in towering apartment buildings without large, open, outdoor play spaces. Concrete playgrounds cannot replace the freedom of running barefoot through the grass or riding bikes down country lanes.

Herman T’s BBQ Sauce Mix Giveaway

HermanT's I love BBQ Sauce, I love it on everything. Herman T’s BBQ Sauce was created by Herman T Jones back in the 1950’s. Over the years, Herman T would share his sauce with anyone who would stop by the house. Flavored with the sweetness of honey and a touch of Smokey apple wood, this sauce became a huge hit. As time would go on, he finally passed his recipe on to his Grandson Brian, who then recreated the recipe for mass production.  Now today, Chef Brian has turned his Grandfather famous sauce into Herman T’s BBQ Sauce Mix. While keeping all of the essential ingredients intact, this sauce mix is sure to make your mouth dance.

small_bbq-sauce-mix-mild-small Now, I wanted to be creative with mine. There are directions on how to mix up the BBQ sauce in your own kitchen using the mix. I made meatloaf last night and I used the mix to season the beef. I added carrots, ketchup, Ritz crackers, and egg. I loved how the meatloaf turned out. It was so flavorful and the whole family gobbled it up. When I cooked it I was worried that I burned the beef, it was browned on the edges, but I like how they ended up tasting. Yummy!

The flavor is great and I’m excited to try it just as a BBQ sauce too. What’s really great is that you don’t have to worry about expiration dates. You mix up what you need and use it then store whatever is left over in the fridge.

A Little Exercise is Better Than No Exercise

While I was at BlogHer one of my meetings was with Healthy Choice to learn more about the Better For BlogHer program. We leaned that there are new flavors coming out this fall and that one of the favorite items that is currently out is the pumpkin ravioli. I’m going to have to go out and try it. I tried the lobster ravioli and was reminded that I only eat seafood at a restaurant that I can not afford to actually eat at because I hate when fish tastes like fish. I’m sure this just means that I’m not really a seafood eater.

Lostweight I had a one on one with their dietician Tara Gidus and we talked about how I can fight my chocolate addiction and how to just spend a little time exercising.

For Tara, who also loves chocolate, spending money on really nice chocolate and eating one piece of something that is really good keeps her from eating an entire bag of the cheap chocolate. I remember when I did have some Godiva chocolate and the same thing is true for me, I hate spending money on nice chocolate but if it actually satisfies my craving and makes me eat less then I’m going to give it another try.

Two, when it comes to exercise just getting up and doing something is better than doing nothing. I know I’m not alone when I admit that exercising is difficult and I feel like it has to be all or nothing. That’s just not true. Something is better than nothing and something leads to more. The more you move the more energy you will in turn have.

Good News is after all of the walking in New York and eating smaller meals more often, I’ve actually lost weight. I have no idea how much because my husband broke my scale, but I do know that my jeans are too big. This afternoon, I dug in my closet and pulled out a pair of my older jeans that I haven’t worn since I became pregnant with Zoe. I wanted to go jumping up and down I was so excited. Size 6.

What do you think, do I look ok?

Retro to New: Wisk Reinvented

wisk I’ve been selected to participate as a brand ambassador for Wisk. I’ve seen Wisk and briefly remember the Ring Around the Collar commercials, but I have no experience using Wisk. I’m actually really looking forward to using it and testing out their claims.

Are stains different today then they were 50 years ago. I’m not sure that they are, except that maybe we use more chemicals in everything we do than we used to. I will say though that moms are quite different. We are so much more on the go now then moms were then. With technology at the palm of our hands we just go go go and our kids go go go along with us. I think this action creates more stains because kids are eating on the go, and playing everywhere. What are your thoughts on stains over the years, verses mothers?

Wisk Then:

Wisk Now:

My kids get all kinds of stains on them and I had no idea that stains are broken into three major groups and four other groups:

* Carbohydrates such as milk chocolate
* Proteins such as grass
* Oils such as peanut butter

The other groups of stains include:

* Bio such as blood
* Bleachable such as coffee
* Particulate such as dirt
* Synthetic such as ink

I can’t wait to find out if the new Wisk with Stain Spectrum Technology will get out stains in all of the groups without having to pre-treat the stains. Wisk is available in August at major retailers nationwide, such as Walmart, Target and Kroger with a suggested retail price:  $5.99 for 50 fl oz. bottles that cleans 32 loads.

Visit Wisk on Facebook for more information and stay tuned for more of the inside scoop as I start reviewing Wisk at home.

This post is part of a paid campaign I am doing with Wisk and One2OneNetwork. All opinions are my own.

Was Charm City Cakes Really At BlogHer? #blogher10

Everyone was looking at the awesome cake at Sparklecorn and at the bottom of the cake was a sign that said, Cake By Charm City Cakes, Ace of Cakes. I want to know if anyone knows if this was really the case or if it was a joke.

image

I have to say it tasted really good. It had peanut butter in the middle of it. I love peanut butter. If it was Charm City Cakes I’d love to watch that episode.
