Back To School Savings at Walmart

I love to share savings with my readers and I’ve forgotten that. I’ve been so wrapped up in working with brands and hosting giveaways that I forgot why some of you started following me in the first place. Once upon a time I wrote about saving money, where to go to save and how to use coupons. So maybe, just maybe, I’ll make some time to write about that again!

Walmart sent me a list of some of their back to school savings and even though they are not paying me to post this, I thought it might help some of you who are already buying or thinking about buying back to school items.

crayon_draw_children_266325_lFrom Crayola Washable markers to Texas Instruments calculators, parents can check off all the items on their school-bound children’s supply lists at Walmart. The retailer offers the brands, colors and styles kids want and need at unbeatable prices. Walmart also has some great back-to-college prices and sample shopping lists that can help your readers figure out all that they need at www.walmart.com/backtoschool.

Ready for some homework? Walmart stands firmly behind back-to-school savings and invites you to take the “Walmart Savings Challenge.” Put Walmart’s prices to the test by shopping for your whole list and comparing prices with other, local retailers. Get ready to add up the savings!

Woodland Park Zoo Calendar Contest #Seattle

I was thinking of entering this contest and then as I was looking for a photo from the zoo this is all I could find. They are looking for animals to feature, and I don’t think that includes photos of the kids even though, I would consider them part of the zoo.

Entries accepted Monday, August 16 through Monday, August 30, 2010.

Woodland Park Zoo’s annual calendar magazine issue is full of beautiful color photos of the zoo’s animals and now You can be part of it.

They’re asking photographers — amateur and professional alike — to submit their best photos of Woodland Park Zoo’s animals for a chance to win the calendar’s cover shot. Zoo judges will select the top 10 photos to be voted on by the public on their website and Facebook Fan page. The winning photo will appear as the cover shot of the winter calendar issue that comes out in November 2010.

See Woodland Park Zoo Calendar Contest for more details.

Girl Playing Dead Caught on Google Street View

My husband sent me this and it really disturbs me. The girl says she was playing a game with her friend but I still find the whole thing game or not to be very odd. Why would you be playing a game where you are just pretending to be dead? Maybe I’m just getting old and don’t remember what it was like to play with my friends.

Photo taken by Google Street View. See more details on Mail Online.

Of course, it also brings up the question of privacy, but for some reason that doesn’t bother me as much as the girl playing dead in the street. What do you think? What is creepier, the thought of losing your privacy to all of these cameras taking photos of our streets or a girl playing dead and caught on camera?

What is your Fresh Idea?

At Blogher I tried to step outside of my comfort level and do video opportunities. I let people interview me and I interviewed them. One of the opportunities was with Walmart. They were taking videos of people sharing their “Fresh Idea”. A Fresh Idea is a way that you can be a little more green or environmentally conscience. So I thought of something that I try to do:

BOB Books Sight Words For Kindergarten and Preschool Giveaway

Scholastic recently sent us BOB Books Sight Words for Kindergarten and Preschool and Zoe and Miles have both been enjoying it. You know when you sit down and work with your child and they just stare at you with glossed over eyes or they play with the string on your sweatshirt as you’re trying to teach them. You just feel like busting your head over the counter thinking to yourself they are not getting, they are not ready to learn it’s just not going to happen. I had one of those moments with Miles today, we were looking at these books and then I got side tracked (i’m a great example for him can you tell) and I wanted to teach him his ABC’s. I thought that would be a good place to start, well he did everything but pay attention.

Then tonight while we were playing with chalk he starts singing his ABC’s and he got pretty far before he started back over at A. So what I’m trying to say is don’t give up, teaching tools like these books do work. Zoe and I were looking at the words and spelling them out. She already recognizes all of the uppercase letters, we just need more work on lower case letters.

More About the Books

From the #1 bestselling learn-to-read program come two brand-new sets focused on learning and practicing Sight Words.

Sight Words are words that are recognized by sight rather than sounded out, in order to achieve reading fluency. They are the most frequently used words in the English language, and are often unable to be read phonetically (“was”, “are”, and “out” are examples).  Bob Books Sight Words feature the top Sight Words in two sets – one for kindergarten and one for first grade – in order to allow parents and children to read, learn, and practice easily and enjoyably.

Each Sight Words box includes 10 original books, 30 flashcards, and a parent guide.  Soon your child will be saying “I read the whole book!”®

Help Your Local School: Power a Bright Future Grant By Clorox

I like to collect school supplies along with my MOMS Club in the month of August for back to school in September. We take these supplies over to the Maltby Food Bank and they fill up back packs for kids in need. They also stock up some of the teachers closets with what they have left over.

Do you have a local program that you support?

If not, you might want to look into it and look into Clorox’s Power a Bright Future program.

About the Power A Bright Future Grant Program

· Power A Bright Future is a grant program aimed at providing necessary resources to help support school programs that enrich kids’ lives.

· As part of Power A Bright Future, Clorox is calling on individuals to nominate schools in need for a chance to win a $50,000 grand-prize grant or one of three $20,000 grants to help provide critically needed resources to schools programs that enrich kids’ lives and create brighter futures.

Voting will be begin the beginning of October.

If you want to get involved, nominate your school by visiting Clorox.com from today, August 12th through September 27th 2010. Then you should upload a photo and a short summary of how the grant will be used. Choose one of three categories that best represents the program.

Play: sports or play time focused

Create: arts focused

Whoever receives the highest number of votes will be awarded $50,000 grand-prize. The next three top votes will receive a $20,000 grant. There are four winners and that is a wonderful thing. So pick a school, nominate them, then get people to vote. To increase your favorite program’s chances of winning, vote early and often! Also, visit www.clorox.com for more information about the instant win games.

Earlier this month, I attended Clorox’s 2010 BlogHer session where I learned more about the Power a Bright Future program and received free product samples and giveaways.

Veggie Tales SweetPea Beauty

We have been watching Veggie Tales for a few years now and my kids are loving all the new movies coming out. The newest of these movies being SweetPea Beauty. I put it on for them yesterday and I’m ashamed to say that I was so tired I fell asleep. I asked Zoe if she wanted to watch it again and she said yes. The one about the princess that gets captured. I’m thinking, I’m glad someone watched it, can you write my review for me?

sp_CoverShe was quite excited to watch it again because Veggie Tales Sweetpea Beauty is another success by Big Idea! I love Veggie Tales because there is always a good message for the kids within the movie and it is reinforced. There are actually two stories on this DVD. Both are about the beauty within yourself. The first one is the story of Snoodlerella the ugliest Snoodle around according to the village. Well, her godmother fixes her up and makes her beautiful and she is the most popular girl at the ball. Then when the spell breaks she is left all alone. While she is sulking in the corner, the king comes out and tells her that he loves her the way she is. She was made beautiful on the inside and that is what counts.

Then the feature of the DVD, Sweetpea Beauty. Queen Blueberry thinks that beauty is only skin deep and she asks the mirror who is the most beautiful. One day, the mirror tells her that Sweetpea is the most beautiful and the queen becomes very jealous. She decides to banish Sweetpea. While the Queen’s attitude continues to degrade the evil mirror makes the queen even more ugly. Sweetpea is saved by the prince and in the process the prince discovers where true beauty lies.

DVD Running Time: 45 Minutes
Additional Info: Widescreen and Fullscreen, Spanish and English Subtitles, Running Time 50 min, 5.1 Surround, NTSC Region 1
