Nanny McPhee Returns Review & Giveaway

Nanny McPhee Returns is out in theaters starting today, August 20th. I had the opportunity to see an early screening of the movie.

nannymcpheereturns Nanny McPhee, that’s little c big P brought laughter and tears to my eyes. It is a heartwarming family film reminding moms that it’s ok to need help, while also teaching kids great manners. Nanny McPhee Returns is filled with actors that I know and love. Maggie Gyllenhaal (Batman: The Dark Night) plays the mom, Isabel Green that has been left behind to take care of everything while her husband is off fighting the war. Her husband is played by Ewan McGregor and even though his part in the movie is very small, I’m still glad he made an appearance in the movie! Isabel is taking care of three children that have gotten quite out of hand. In addition to taking care of her three children, two of their cousins are about to come live with her as well. Plus, she is taking care of Mrs. Docherty (Maggie Smith from Harry Potter), the store keeper that is getting on in her years and needs to be supervised so she doesn’t put syrup in drawers. Yikes, this mother has her hands full.

That is when Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) comes into her life. Parts of the movie are over the top, but I think it’s all for the kids. Watching the movie in a room full of children reminded me that that’s what they enjoy. Things that are over the top, like dancing pigs, fireworks and talking birds.

When Nanny McPhee arrives she decides that all of these children need to learn five lessons. She uses her magic to teach them how to share, be kind, have faith and helps them save their farm from their uncle who gambled it away. I’m such a sucker for a family film, I was crying at the beginning and at the end. Nanny McPhee always leaves when you no longer need her but you want her and I wanted her to stay as well. Good Byes are so hard!

My best tactic is to find two acceptible choices and give the child the chance to make a decision but still do what I want them to. Like give two outfits but let them pick which to wear. They think they are in control but really you are still guiding them to make decisions that make the parent happy.

  42. Jill Myrick says:

For me it is keeping everyone in harmony.
Each week my children have a simple chore list like walking the trash to the outside can or sweeping in which they trade off weekly. They never have the same chore two weeks in a row so it gets done without a lot of griping . Each chore completed without being told determines their allowance. So they usually get done without asking. Aspecially if they are saving for something that they want.
