Run the setup file

Then Start the Program

(I wasn’t able to actually get the program to run, some kind of incompatibility with my computer and the beta, but they are currently trying to help me though it) I hope that some of you are able to run the program and from within the program you should be able to download the free books. Also, if you have questions ask me and I’ll ask them!

VTech’s Learning Lodge offers free downloadable books, games, customized themes and avatars. Additionally, Learning Lodge allows you to track your children’s achievement through a customized Progress Log which provides an overview of how your child is progressing through key learning curriculum, all of which are age-appropriate.

When you download the vreader you can select the games that are 2.99 and 4.99 or use your v coins. You have 6 vcoins in the top right hand corner of your “cart”. Just select the game and it deducts from your coins making up to 6 games free.

      • says

Yea i love how that works i love getting free stuff for his vtech $4.99 is just way to much for me these days i like the free stuff .

      • Ev@ In C@Li :) says

Upon registering I recieved only 3 v.coins, I guess they changed the amount that they give you. but hey, 3 is better than none; so I guess I cnt complain. Over all I am very satisfied with the product and my lil girl Loves It! :)

  1. says

Yes, the download center only has downloads for sale. I downloaded and hooked up our vReader. If you could ask them how to access the free books, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

    andrea.kruse at gmail dot com

    • Andrew's Dad says

I take it you downloaded and installed the program, then you registered and opened a new account. When you do that you automatically get 6 coins. When you go to the down load center you will see the stories and YES there are the prices and next to the prices it says ” or 1 coin” push on the coin button and you are done.
      Hope that helps

      • Chance's Mom says

Thankyou, this helped me out alot, i was confused at first. i didnt even know the VTech needed a sd card. Bummer. i was hoping to get them on before the morning.do you know about how much they run.

      • Cara's Mommy says

You should have automatically gotten the six coins to spend. The conins are only good on the games that are 2.99 not the 4.99 ones.

Just add a game that is 2.99 to your cart and you will notice at the bottom that it is free. They will take the cost off at the checkout.

Hope this helps and works for you.

  2. says

Just opened up our V.Reader and are working on the free items. So basically you use your “coins” to get 6 of the items available (I believe there are 10 now) for free. Thanks for the heads-up.

    • says

I love my son v tech reader he has learned how to read on the v tech and he is only 5 years old so i think these free books are great he has learned so much on it and i will keep getting him these books for the v tech cause it is a wanderful thing they have come up with.

  3. Kathy says

Last night I stayed up latetrying to download the books to g.daughters vtech reader. Where do I get the SD card? What kind do I purchase for the vtech reader. As you said the 6 free coins purchase the 6 free books. Hope you can help me understand this.

  4. Jacqueline says

Thank you for the information on the free downloads, very easy to do. But, does anyone know where does the SD card goes in the vreader? I looked all over the thing but was unable to find where it goes into!

  5. Anjee Dennis says

Just bought my 4 year old the V.Reader & wow! What a joke! You think that if they offer this product for ages 3-7 that us adults could understand?…lol. Anyways, It’s a neat item IF the instructions were TRUE! So they tell us to go to this website & download our *FREE* books….WHATEVER! Nothing is free! They are all at a cost! So, tell me please..Mom 2 Mom…how do I get these *FREE* books for my baby so that she won’t be disappointed on Christmas?? Since V.Tech simply do NOT know how to tell us the truth, I guess that we have to depend on each othe for instructions on their products! Thanks V.Tech! For Nothing!

    • Ken says

I admit the software is a little confusing but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to use the coins. My son is four and he can use the VReader just fine. Why don’t you just give it to your kid and go back to watching Fox News.

      • says

it shoud’nt be rocket science obviously, but everytime i try to create an account it rejects my postal code. i guess us smart canadiens are not eligible.for the time i have wasted trying to help my daughter learn more books i could have driven to WALMART 50 times and just bought the frickin programs which most likely is exactly what v tech would rather us parents do. WHAT A HUMONGOUS JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • vDad says

Gee Ken, if you can’t say something constructive perhaps you should stay on your blog.

        In response to questions:
Upon downloading the initial learning lodge software to your computer, make sure you restart your computer. Although not always prompted to do so, my vreader device would not recognize SD card or apply vCoins to account till I did this twice.

vCoins can be concealed in the vTech web interface till you spot them, then they jump out at you. Try adding a title to your cart and then going to checkout. Nothing will be charged to your account till you confirm and if you haven;t entered credit card info you have no need to worry. Your eCoins should kick-in at checkout.

Finally, yes vTech has a long way to go on their documentation and instructional design. Great product, decent though limited content. No documentation on certificates which my son keeps asking about.

Hope this helps, I need to get back to watching Fox news. If people do not watch enough of it they tend to become unproductive, elitest snobs.

        • nickcaz says

Ken is a turd and vDad is right on target. Ken is one of those guys that flips people off from his car while driving away as fast as possible.

Thanks for the VReader information vDad, especially restarting the computer as to aknowledge the SD card.

          • vDad says

LOL on Ken Imagery, I’m sure you’re spot on.

glad reboot info helped; Since the last posting they have also released an updated learning lodge. When you open the web-app Learning lodge it notifies you of an update.

After updating I once again had to reboot in order to have it recognize SD Card.
I remembered that the reason I had to do it twice the first time (original post) is that I had not turned vReader off when rebooting. It should not matter but it worked. This time, after update, turned off reader and single PC reboot did the trick.

Also, Certificates now available as icon on Learning lodge interface. They just magically appear upon completion of stories or certain # of questions answered correctly so you just need to keep plugging in device and checking back, nothing on vReader itself says, “Good Job – You Earned a Certificate”. That would be cool.

Final thought. All of the sudden after a drive my son told me the backpack was empty. Turns out the SD card had slid out of slot a little from vReader getting bumped or whatever. It is a sloppy fit (no catch/release mechanism like all cameras and other items have). So if you all of the sudden have problems just open battery hatch and re-seat SD card in slot.

Have fun all. My son LOVES this thing!!!

      • Neva says

Totally uncalled for. I’d have thought this kind of commentary would be unwelcome, but I guess rude overrides good manners.

      • Melissa says

Hey, I have a question. I learned the V reader needed an SD card, so I put the one from my camera into it. I tried to install the update, but it just says there’s an error. Do I have to erase stuff I previously had on my SD card for it to work or something?

    • LeSage Sr. says

It’s best to go through the Learning Lodge Navigator while it’s running; connect the vreader to your computer; after the connection has been verified, click on your child’s vreader…this will open menu boxes on the left side of the monitor and you can navigate as necessary. Click on the E-book Download Center…and voila!

    • Momma of two says

Anjee Dennis Perhaps you should relearn the English language, the directions were very easy to follow. My two year old can operate the unit all on her own. Maybe you should properly read the instructions and follow them before you go online and bash a company for your own shortfalls. By the way i got all of my free downloads and you put them on a sd memory card. The vreader really is an awesome product and i recommend it to every parent.

  6. MingsMom says

There are a few free books. You have to have a SD card to download them however. It does take awhile for the books to actually download, My daughter is 2 she’ll be 3 in March and she loves their system.

    • Jay says

Any standard SD card will work – I had a spare for my camera. You can buy them just about anywhere – Futureshop, Bestbuy, any photography store. Each book appears to be about 10 Mb so a 2Gb card would be more than adaquate and they sell for under $15 CDN.

  7. Koko says

In order for me to see the free books I had to keep refreshing the page, and still we only got five; but hey it
Is better then nothing I am having a hard time locating the sd slot. Over all my girl loves her reader.

    • Momma of two says

Tracy the games are on the menu for the stories. Pop in a story and you have the option of listening to the story or playing the games. Hope that helped.

  8. Gayla says

I had no problem finding the free books. I got the SD card in without a problem, but everytime I try to download the books absolutely NOTHING happens. I just locks up when I do “proceed to checkout.” HELP!!!

  9. says

There IS hope! I was a skeptic, but a little persistence paid off! I had a little trouble at first, but after getting to the “downloadable books” page it moved PRETTY smootly. We had credit for six downloadable books. (This came with the purchase of the vreader.) The six credits are represented by six “coins”. I chose six books that had showed they could be purchased for 1 coin each and simply added them to the cart one at a time. After all six were in the cart I clicked to complete the purchase and it gave me a pop up message that said to connect to the vreader. Even though I WAS connected I had to turn it off and back on again. I clicked the “transfer” button and it only took about 4 or 5 minutes to transfer to the vreader and they work perfectly! (It never hurts to add a little luck to the equation as well!)

  10. Brooke says

I got one, but i got the memory card in and the downloads downloaded, but everytime i goto transfer them, it says that there is no SD card, anyone else have this isssue???

    • electa says

Yes,it keeps saying sd card not found.vTECH said to purchase an sd card and it goes into a slot in the battery compartment. You can get sd cards at bestbuy, target, walmart…you need 2gb or higher

      • yuki says

Hi there. Just a correction: a 2GB memory card is ENOUGH to load all since each book’s file size ranges from 12 to 2o megabytes each. :)

    • CadenCallsMeMama(Lisa) says

This was my problem too. I was mildly frustrated because I couldn’t find the SD card slot so I inserted the card in the slot on my PC tower like a moron all last night (while my dad whom we live with stood by urging me to get my son in bed) so I finally gave up until this morning when I googled “where does SD card go in VReader” and found this thread! THANK YOU! But yeah, I had the same issue when I tried to transfer it said SD card not found, so I clicked disconnect from the screen on the vreader (I read all the online instructions last night including the info about updating the firmware and it warned us several times NOT to turn the vreader off while updating, or risk corrupting it’s files so I didn’t want to take any chances, LOL!) and THEN I disconnected it and turned it off, re-connected and re-started it and then transfered all 6 free downloads. I actually think it was *fate* because last night my so and I chose 4 free ones with his coins and I kept aside 2 coins for later and then this morning there were two new stories so after all that trouble I just went ahead and purchased the two new books, one of which is his current favorite story for me to “tell” so I knew he would love it.

  11. Kyle says

for first time users, the vtech learning lodge software “gifts” you 6 vtech coins for installing it and setting up an account, and you can only get more if vtech gives them to you as a reward for something.

as for the books, at the time of this writing, there are at least 20 available for download, but you can’t load them on the reader without a sd memory card in the device. regularly $9.99, on sale for $4.99, but the 4 sesame street titles are cash only.

any word on the largest available sd card the reader will take?

and i do reccomend using the learning lodge to update the reader, if anything you get a faster power on time. :)

    • Sophie's Grammie says

ok so how do you get the reader to even connect with the computer…. the one we bought for our Grand Daughter has been “transfering” for about 40 minutes now. Getting kind of frustrated when you pay that much for a toy to help them read, it might have been easier to just buy a book, and would have cost alot less.

    • andrea says

Item in the backpack are the downloaded books from the website. You must have downloaded books or nothing will be there.

  12. says

Thanks for your blog. I have been struggling so much to get those 6 coins that allows me to get the free ebooks promised by vtech. Fortunately your blog was there for me to find where to put the sd card!
I now have the 6 free items on the vreader, however I must say I am disappointed those don’t come with the reader games. Feels like I am only having half the product they promised!
And so much more hours of struggling to figure how the monitoring of my kid’s progress is to be made via their sofware….
    sighs..

  13. LeSage Sr. says

It looks like they still haven’t fixed the software issue. This is not normal or professional. I love the product, may return it for another product if the problem isn’t fixed by the end of the month.

  14. says

Did anyone of you guys figured how the progress log works?
My kids have used the reader games and the dictionnaries but I can’t get their “log on sheet” updated. I was wondering if maybe this part was just for the mobygo users vs v.reader users?

  15. sonya hottrod says

the website is amazing my son is 4 yrs old and loves the new books he just had downloaded to his v reader and i enjoy the website as well i can keep track of his learning

  16. alison says

I have a problem on connecting to the computer. i’m in the navigator lodge and it keep on saying that no device found.!

  17. Sophie's Grammie says

We just got our Grand Daughter a V.Reader because she is always trying to take my E-Reader and now we are trying to set hers up and when we plug the cord from her reader to the computer it tells us it is transfering…. we are waiting for the little green check mark and it is not appearing, it has now been almost 20 minutes….Does anyone kow how long this should take?

  18. retal's mom says

this is a rep off and a waste of time i tried s million times and it won’t work and i don’t approve they are lying to us maybe it’s a virus…

  19. Barb says

I had no problems registering, and getting my free 6 coins although I was pretty skeptical since I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas LAST year, and forgot all about the online gaming aspects. Im sure you can understand why I thought I pretty much screwed myself out of the deal-we didnt keep the BOX! LOL I didnt need to, I guess because her e-reader wasnt registered before? Either way…anyone have any problems actually ADDING to their cart??? I immeadiately saw a couple books for her and the ‘add to cart’ button wont highlight or anything. I can click on details, but not add to my cart :( Any suggestions?

  20. need help says

i hook up the v reader to my computer and the computer recognizes it but the learning lodge says device not found. please help!

  21. Danielle says

Now, I have figured out how to get free books off the website, even got my SD card in the right place. But i did not get 6 v coins, i only got 3 and i wanted to kno how you get 6?

  22. Yolanda Benton says

I’m happy for all of you that got the 6 free downloads. My grandkids only got 3 free downloads with their V.Tech readers. It also took forever to register it correctly. The company does not make it easy to access the site you need to get started, but once you figure out which site to click on, it wasn’t to bad.

  23. Michelle says

Hey… I see that the last post was over a year ago but was hoping someone was still out there :)
I guess the V.Reader is a little different now… Had a problem with my 512MB SD Card switched it to a 32MD Micro SD card in an Adapter and it was recognized by the Learning lodge. Transfers went through fine and screen prompts me to disconnect USB and then press “backpack.” Every time I push “backpack” all the icons disappear and then return. When I unplug the SD Card and press “backpack” it says “There are no items in your backpack”
Any ideas? Also tried with my 2GB Micro SD Card but Learning Lodge says “No SD Card Found”

  24. says

how do i download a new game for my Vreader…..I AM SICK OF THE WACK A MOLE game…..i need to hear another game….i have looked everywhere on the website for vreader and can not find GAMES for the VREADER….not for innotab.

What kind of pass word the download site is asking me after entering the one they provided me yet still it not making any different, it keep asking me about pass word is incorrect. How do i successfully download the free downloads. Please help.

downloaded software– once launched, it won’t recognize the device – says not connected even though i can see it in windows explorer. have upgraded, changed cables, changed computers.. software will not recognize vreader, says usb is not valid…

  27. jesus says

does anyone know how to actually get games or books for free for my 3 year old sons vtech reader? if so , please let me know. he loves it soooooo much

  28. Jennifer H says

I have everything up and running, downloaded, bought an ebook, got the free ones, sd card in! Now it keeps saying ‘error in transfer’. My sd card is 1gb. It appears there’s plenty of space as it shows me what remains after selecting a book for transfer. Anyone have any answers for me?? oh, I have a mac and after every try the screen leaves vtech and boots up iphoto. very frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help:)

    • michelle natalucci says

i feel like a complete idiot but i can not for the life of me figure out where to get the free books! i have wasted more time on this than you can imagine? exactly where do i have to go? i put in the SD card, i was able to add books to my cart and pay for them but could not find the FREE ones! every time i connect the ereader it reminds me I have 3 free downloads! ugh!!! if only i could get them!

Thanks so much for sharing this, was very excited picking out my 6 free stories only to realize I could not. Unfortunately, I do not have an SD memory card so I was unable to download any . So now will try and find an SD card for the system and retry. This is a very good deal they offer.
