How to Change a Flat Tire

michelinI’m working with Michelin and Bzzagent on the Michelin Campaign. By spreading the word about Michelin Tires, I have the opportunity to win different prizes. One thing that just caught my eye was an article about how to change a flat tire. I’ve been there, we’ve all been there. How do you handle changing a spare tire?

     1.    Safely pull over: Set your emergency brake and turn on your hazards
     2.    Prepare the tire: Remove the hubcap and loosen the lug nuts
     3.    Jack up your vehicle: Jack until the tire is about six inches off of the
ground — typically, the jack goes a few inches behind the front tires, or a
few inches in front of the rear tires (consult your vehicle owner’s manual)
     4.    Remove the flat tire: Remove the lug nuts, then position your hands at 9
and 3 o’clock on your tire and pull it straight off
     5.    Mount the spare tire: Align the holes on the spare with the threaded bolts
then replace each lug nut, followed by the lug nut across from it
     6.    Secure the spare tire: Lower your vehicle, then tighten each lug nut
            followed by its opposite
     7.    Put away the tools: Replace the tools and store your flat tire

I find that one of the most difficult aspects of changing a tire is just getting the lug nuts off. Man almighty those things are always on so tight, I used to use my own weight to try to pry them off. Jumping on your crowbar will just cause damage to yourself, the car, or the crowbar itself; more than likely you’ll probably still have a lug nut on your hubcap that will still not come off.

So tell me what you do when you need to change a tire, my husband told me since we have kids that I should just call AAA.

  1. I’ve never changed a flat tire and I hope I never have too. I’ll happily pay extra for roadside assistance in my insurance premiums LOL!

I had a flat tire just 2 weeks ago and it was just my kids and I. Luckily my Dad was just down the road. I called him up and he came and fixed it for me. He had a hard time with it, especially getting the lug nuts off. So, I couldn’t imagine if I would have had to do it. That reminds me, I need to get a roadside assistance program.

I call my husband…but like to know how to do it incase I’m alone or he’s unavailable or something. This was really helpful.

The one time I had to change a tire I was in high school and I don’t want to tell you how long ago that was! I certainly needed a refresher course, though! :)

We just purchased the Michelin Hydro Edge tires for my car this past spring. We got a fantastic deal at Sam’s Club with a rebate – They are excellent driving tires and I would buy them again in a heart beat.
