Summer Months Mean Swimming Pools Be Safe

Today I have a guest post from The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson that takes place today!

More than 10,000 children on four continents will bob, float and flutter kick their way into the record clip_image002books by participating in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ at 2 pm GMT on Thursday, June 3rd.  As part of a global life-safety event, more than 200 aquatic facilities world-wide will provide a coordinated swim lesson and introduce a valuable life-skill that hopefully begins a lifetime of water safety awareness.
Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1-14. However, tragic pool deaths and injuries can and should be prevented. Research shows that a child who hasn’t learned to swim by the third grade likely never will, so teaching children proper swimming techniques at an early age is the first step in helping avoid tragedies down the road.

This summer, Underwriters Laboratories, a leading product safety testing organization, is providing useful pool safety tips to help your family stay safe, whether you’re swimming in the backyard, at the community pool or even participating in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™.

HOME POOL SAFETY

  • If you have a pool at home, install a fence. The fence should be at least four feet high and have a self-closing, self-latching gate that has a locking mechanism beyond a child’s reach.
  • Cut overhanging tree limbs and remove chairs or ladders from the pool area to prevent children from climbing over the fence surrounding the pool.
  • Keep grates and drain covers in good repair and secured in place. Alert your family and guests to stay away from these devices, as the suction from drain outlets is strong enough to cause entrapment of hair or body parts, which can cause drowning.
  • Make sure you know infant and child CPR if you own a pool.

SWIMMING SAFETY SMARTS

· Supervision is a must. Follow the 10/20 rule when you’re at the pool. The 10/20 rule states the supervising adult needs to position themselves to be able to scan the pool within 10 seconds and reach the water within 20 seconds.

  • Always have rescue devices such as UL-LISTED life preservers nearby.
  • Flotation devices, toys and inflatable swimming aids are not safety devices. They are toys and can easily puncture and deflate.
  • Always drain wading pools after children are done playing. Infants can drown in just a few inches of water.
  • Have a telephone nearby and appropriate emergency numbers posted.
  • Remove all toys when you leave the pool. Toys may attract children to the unattended pool.

The Daddy Withdrawal Day

image It seems to me that every week on Monday we go through daddy withdrawals. The kids are grumpier than usual and anytime I say something that makes them upset the first words out of their mouth are, “I want Daddy”.

All I can think to myself is SO DO I. Stop griping at me, stop yelling at me and most of the time I lose my cool and yell right back at them. Then of course I suffer from the mommy guilt.

This last week, I went to Oregon on a blogging trip so Daddy took off from work. When I came home he was supposed to go back to work, but he ended up taking the rest of the week off and then Monday was a holiday.

So Tuesday finally rolls around and I’m stressed out not looking forward to an even bigger Daddy Withdrawal Day than usual. My anxiety was even more exaggerated with that fact that all weekend, I had no power. It was I want Daddy all weekend and since he was available it was easy for him to step in and make them behave.

My husband gave me some advice on Monday night, he told me to go into it with a good attitude and everything should be fine. I gave him the dirtiest look and thought to myself, easy for you to say!

I decided to have a great day, and well it actually worked. I don’t think it will always work but we had lots of cuddle time, and I wasn’t on my computer very much. We played outside and I had to work really hard to relax and play; playing is not my strong suit. So do you think that taking care of kids is a frame of mind? I prefer positive parenting over getting upset and using the naughty spot all day, but since it happens almost every Monday it feels like it’s out of my control. Any Thoughts?

Gaming for Toddlers VTech MobiGo Touch Screen Learning System Giveaway

VTech LogoI keep forgetting to get a picture of Zoe actually playing with it. VTech sent us their new MobiGo Touch Screen Learning System. It’s amazing technology because it’s a touch screen that doesn’t make a child lose it. I mean, most touch screen cell phones make me want to drown them in the ocean. So Vtech has mastered something here with a piece of technology aimed at a 3 year old.

What is it?

image

MobiGo is like a video game, but it’s all educational for ages 3-8. You buy cartridges or download games from the web onto it through the USB cable hooked up to your computer. Everything about it is geared at 3+. My daughter can turn it on and off, she can select her game, the level of difficulty, except we had to tell her that two stars means hard and to only select one star. She just thought two stars was more fun. She has a little difficulty opening up the keyboard, all you do is slide it up, and I have a feeling it’s more of I’m not showing her how to do it, but rather doing it for her. They can upload their score when they are done and collect a prize.

She knows how to exit a game and select a new one and she enjoys playing all of the games. We have been working a lot on letter recognition so she was trying the letter game. She has no knowledge of the qwerty keyboard, so it’s been a great learning experience helping her find the letters. I just have to remember to let her do it. She won’t learn as long as I’m doing it. But we are having some good time together and she is learning.

The games all improve dexterity, some of them are logical problems while others are categorization. One of them she has to pick which animal is different, then another she has to pick the next number in the sequence. Numbers have not been something that I have worked with her on very much so we’re going to be working on counting and number recognition here in the near future. The most endearing thing she did was share it with her brother and she showed him how to use it. She’s three and he’s two. He was actually able to trace the lines for the “squirrel game”.

Compare the size to other controllers or games out there:

Summer Time Cleaning: Black and Decker Studio Shredder #Giveaway

Junk mail stacks up at our house and you can only recycle so much of it. If it has personal information of any kind on it then it needs to be shredded. So you need a shredder to keep your information out of those dumpster divers. Yes it does happen, and yes we do have a shredder. We have a large shredder. So your next response may be that you don’t have room for a shredder, we don’t really have anywhere to put ours either. I think it’s in a closet or the garage right now. Black & Decker have the solution for me and you. They recently sent me the Black & Decker Studio Shredder. The Studio Shredder is small and easy to hide, but also sleek in design so you won’t want to hide it.

image

imageMy Husband had the day off yesterday as did everyone else so he thought it would be a good idea to stress test the new shredder. I was upstairs taking a nap. This is his stack of papers, cd, credit cards, that he wanted to shred.

He did not follow the directions and when I came downstairs he had over heated the machine and I actually thought he killed it. He shredded a CD, credit cards, and much more than six sheets of paper at a time. When I came down stairs from my nap, I found this mess.

imageHe’s a man, what can I say! So maybe if you win it, don’t leave it in the hands of your DH!!

image

I plugged it back in today and unclogged it and it works again, it just had to cool off. The Studio Shredder survived my husband to shred another day!

StarStruck Review and Giveaway

clip_image001StarStruck is a Disney Channel original movie that has been released to DVD in an extended edition. Being the movie addict that I am I accepted it as a review. I was a little worried because I gave up Tween movies when I had kids. Yes, I was one of those adults that would watch the Disney Channel and all the movies over and over again. But even Disney can be a little too much for little ones.

On June 8th, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment releases STARSTRUCK: EXTENDED EDITION on DVD! Pop star Christopher Wilde (Sterling Knight, “Sonny With a Chance”) makes quite the impression on Jessica Olson (Danielle Campbell, “Prison Break”) and her older sister Sara during a routine family vacation. Brandon Mychal Smith (“Sonny With a Chance”) and Chelsea Staub (“JONAS”) also star in this rockin’ DC Original Movie!

StarStruck is extremely clean, and the girls in it dress appropriately. StarStruck promotes strong messages about honesty, humility, self-acceptance, and strength of character. I was really impressed and felt completely comfortable letting my kids watch it. Zoe even liked it. She even told me, I like this movie mommy. Most movies that aren’t animated she loses interest and says that she doesn’t like it. StarStruck is available on June 8, 2010, StarStruck: Extended Edition 2 Disc DVD+CD is priced at $29.99

StarStruck is the classic girl meets boy under awkward circumstances story, they dislike each other, and the boy is caught off guard. He can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like him and decides to find out more about her. Christopher Wilde is taken on an unexpected adventure as he falls for Jessica Olson, who in turn falls for him. Of course, complications are thrown in as Christopher opens his mouth and ruins a perfect day and then goes on to lie about meeting Jessica. Is a happy ending in store? You’ll just have to watch StarStruck to find out.

The bonuses featured on the StarStruck: Extended Edition DVD include:
   •    Extended version of the movie – only available on DVD
   •    More Music with eight Rock-Along tracks to sing-along with!
   •    Three Hot Music Videos

Are Toy Labels Accurate? Baby Looney Tunes Baby Bugs Giveaway

Happily Healthy is teamed up with Warner Brothers and Mom Logic to bring new mothers answers to baby questions. Happily Healthy offers fun, and engaging ways to nurture your baby over a series of videos and posts on Mom Logic.

Dra. Aliza touches on a topic that I have wondered about many times. I’ve even been told that toy companies make the age requirement a year older than what is actually required but that you should judge by your child’s developments. Here is what she has to say on Are Toy Labels Accurate?

Birth to 12 months: Pick toys that stimulate your baby’s senses of sight, sound and touch. Think of toys of different colors that make noises, and are textured. Consider toys such as rattlers, blocks, and soft interactive toys. Above all, be sure to match the toy to your baby’s personality. For example, some babies respond to texture over color and sound and vice versa. A simple toy is really all an infant needs since he does not require all the bells and whistles that a toddler does.

Toddlers: When it comes to toys, this is the age where the fun really begins. Your little one is a bundle of energy and will want to get into anything and everything. You will notice as your baby grows, he or she will become more physical and will have a tendency to tug, push and pull. This is the stage where your toddler’s curiosity is at its peak and he will want to touch and taste and grasp onto anything in his sight. The best bet for toys at the toddler stage are those such as sing-along toys or toys with music, building blocks, or toys with buttons that your little one can push or pull. And, because your toddler’s curiosity is at it’s highest, definitely look for those toys that both entertain and educate, as each day is a new day to learn, discover, explore, and absorb.

For the health and safety of your baby, it is important to pay close attention to the age recommendations made by toy manufacturers. In general, the younger your baby is, the more wary you should be of toys with small, detachable parts as these can cause choking – the leading cause of toy-related deaths. If the toy requires more of a ‘hands-on’ interaction – such as pulling or pushing – it may be too advanced for younger babies and, potentially, be disappointing for them. Also, be cautious with any toys that require a type of physical agility that your baby or toddler hasn’t yet quite mastered.
