Dads and their Pets

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul would like you to share your favorite story of your father/husband and his pet. I think that pet owners are parents as well. I’ll go first.

Picking our First Child

image One of the first things my husband and I did after we were married was we picked out a dog. We both have a soft spot for a cute puppy. We looked at dogs for a while. We had to wait until we had a house so most of the time we were just teasing ourselves. Then we found the dog.

There was one Labrador/retriever puppy left. He was all alone in his cage and we pulled him out to play with him. We weren’t expecting to take him home with us, we hadn’t quite closed on our new house yet.  However he was adorable. Playing with him was quite a bit of fun, the winning feat was that when we threw a ball for him, he brought it back. Thinking that it was an accident for a puppy we threw it again, no matter how many times we threw that ball he brought it back to us.

Chewbacca came home with us that day. We gave all the information on our new home and the humane society actually verified that we were in fact buying that house. He was our first child, and my husband loved throwing that ball as long as Chewbacca would bring it back.

When we were growing up, my Dad was on K-9 (Baltimore City Police Dept). I remember when he first brought home his “partner”- Nipper. He was such a great dog. For years they would go to work, and on his days off, Nipper would go with us on our family outings (Grandparents, parks etc) The first time I ever saw my Dad cry was the day Nipper died

My dad used to work outside with his wonderful dog that we got at the humane society back when I was in fourth grade. She was a sweet wire-haired terrier/daschund named Muffin. She was as loyal as could be, and any time she could work out in the yard with him, she would. She lived a long, good life, and he still remembers her fondly and loves her even though she has been gone all this time.

  4. Growing up, we always had a boxer as one of our pets! My father’s favorite was a brown and white boxer we named Winston. We had him from the time he was only 5 weeks old, and he was raised with kittens. He snuggled up to the mama cat and played with his feline brothers and sisters! He was my daddys dog, without a doubt. When my dad would go somewhere that Winston could go, he’d open the truck door and Winston would hop in and sit upright in the passenger seat. He would growl and bark unless my dad buckled the seatbelt around him. When my dad worked on cars, Winston would be upside down on his back, under the truck, just like my dad. When my dad would pick grapes off the grapevine, Winston would jump up and pull grapes off too! Winston was 80lbs of pure baby love, and 100% Daddy’s dog!

Our dog Belle is walked by my husband every weekend. She is more obediant for him. We have trouble with her recognizing her daddy in a hat though, she will bark at him. I usually say, “See, she doesn’t like you in a hat either.”

  8. Cathy Burnett says:

My Dad had a collie named Daisy. My sister and I don’t know “who saved who”. My Dad had always had a dog and after the death of his last dog, my sister got this collie for him. She has been the most wonderful dog in the world. She met him at the door every morning to go out and feed the chickens and horses. Followed him every step of the way. Sadly, Daisy no longer has her friend. My dad passed away on May 2, 2010 of kidney cancer. Now my Mom is trying to bond with the dog. She’s doing a pretty good job. cathyb4@yahoo.com

When my dad was young he had a Boston Terrior named Pat that ate so fast he was afraid the dog would choke to death. He decided to hand feed the dog its kibble piece by piece each day and that’s what he did!

My dad had a beagle that I named snoopy when I was young. That dog was my father’s shadow. Sometimes he even took him to work. I remember he liked to eat marshmellows. He was a great dog and companion for my father. I remember when my father had to go in the hospital, the dog howled and wouldn’t stop. I really miss them both.

Bo & Dad used to go for walks on the walking trail by our house, he’s also take him to the park because Bo loved to go down the slide. Bo’s favorite song was “Bad to the Bone” and everytime Dad sung it Bo would cock his head from side to side and get the whole body wiggle going. Definitely Man’s best friend. Thanks so much for this offer. camsgram@kc.rr.com

both my grandfather and father had dachshunds named Struppi

  14. Pam says:

After my siblings and I all home my parents got a sheltie they called Mitsy. My Dad loved that dog so much. My one sister said to me one day that she wouldn’t put it past my Dad to have a picture of Mitsy on his desk at work instead of one of us. Unfortunately, Mitsy passed away after my Dad retired and it seemed like my Dad had lost his best friend.

  15. Melanie says:

My dad loves all of our pets.
He even dotes on my mother’s poodle, even taking him for walks in the
neighborhood. It’s really sweet to watch.

My Dad had a German Shepard named Pal when he was a child. He adored him and we have many pics of my Dad and Pal. They lived in Indiana in the country and used to build forts in the woods. It was a happy time for him, Thanks

  17. Veronica Garrett says:

My dad had a loyal dog named Jack. He raised it from a pup. I’m not sure how long the dog lived but it was somewhere around 15 years. Jack protected us from snakes and once a bobcat.

  18. Mari says:

We had a German shepherd named trixie. Unlike most German shepards, our dog was mute and never barked. A neighbor owned her and when she grew up it was apparent that she
Lacked the mean and resonating sound that gs dogs make when they bark. But dad being the animal lover that he was, offered to take her in. And trixie was his faithful companion for the rest of her life.
