I want to meet Paula Deen, Do You?

clip_image002I love Paula Deen. I love love love her. When I had cable, I recorded her shows and watched them over and over again. You know, all you need is a stick of butter to turn something into a fantastic southern dish, and Paula Deen is all over that. My husband and I used to watch all of the Food Network Specials together, especially if Paula Deen was in them. We would laugh together over the idea of deep fried butter. It was Paula Deen that taught me how to cook a turkey.

Here’s what I have to do, well, you can do it too if you want a chance at meeting her yourself:

*   On Facebook:  Create Facebook Shares and posts about the site, Paula’s videos, and the videos in the recipe gallery – make sure that when you post to Facebook you put an "@" sign before the word "Philadelphia’ so we can see it on our Facebook – www.Facebook.com/LoveMyPhilly

*   On Twitter:  Tweet about Real Women of Philadelphia and add in the hash tag #RWOP at the end of your tweets.  Philly is on Twitter at www.Twitter.com/LoveMyPhilly
*   Or just retweets Paula’s videos and videos from all the girls in the Recipes gallery
*   Leave comments on videos on the site (quality, not quantity!)

Paula Deen is looking for a super-fan. Are you her? If you win you will act as the “Voice” of the community for another contest she is hosting, Real Women of Philadelphia. You will receive an all expense paid trip to Savannah to spend time with Paula and the finalists and act as the behind-the-scenes ambassador for the entire four days!

Movie Review: “Invictus”

clip_image001On Tuesday “Invictus” was released by Warner Brothers.  Clint Eastwood created a masterpiece directing “Invictus” with actors Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela in the early stages of his Presidency. It began when he was released from prison. He was in prison for being a terrorist against his country and in his 27 years of prison he learned what most men cannot. He learned how to forgive with a heart bigger than any other I have ever seen.

My history lessons came up short in my knowledge of Nelson Mandela. In this feature-length documentary I learned quite a bit about South Africa and how a rugby team brought the country to unite. Matt Damon plays the rugby team captain, and watching it, I felt like he was a little too quite to be a rugby captain.

The South African Team is the worst team in the world. However, they get to host the World Cup so that guarantees them a spot. Mandela realizes that all the people that hate him love the rugby team and everyone else wants to shut them down. By helping inspire the team captain to lead the team to victory, the love of sports finally comes out of everyone. Then everyone has something in common to unite over. I was inspired because Mandela’s plan worked like magic. It worked on the hardest of hearts.

Synopsis

What does Nelson Mandela do after becoming president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives oppressors who jailed him 27 years for his fight against apartheid and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field. Clint Eastwood (named 2009’s Best Director by the National Board of Review) directs an uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. Morgan Freeman (NBR’s Best Actor Award winner and Oscar nominee for this role) is Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Matt Damon) and his squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup. Prepare to be moved – and thrilled. http://invictusmovie.warnerbros.com/dvd/index.html

Available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for Download 5/18! http://bit.ly/bqTanS

On May 18th, Invictus will also be available ON DEMAND through Digital Cable, Satellite TV, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles. You can also download it on iTunes and Amazon Video On Demand. On June 1, WHV will offer an up-close and personal look at the legendary Hollywood icon with the debut of a feature-length documentary, The Eastwood Factor Extended Version, narrated by Academy Award®-winner Morgan Freeman. I’m pretty excited about this.  There will be  four new WHV Eastwood collections released and the world premiere May 31 Turner Classic Movies’ airing of the documentary. The Eastwood Factor Extended Version will be available as a single title for $14.97 SRP. The Eastwood collections include the Clint Eastwood Collection, I am excited to see all the movies bundled together, a new Blu-ray box set featuring 10 films on Blu ray (BD), Essential Eastwood: Director’s Collection in both Blu-ray and DVD,  Essential Eastwood: Action Collection,  Eastwood Blu-ray Promotion with Blu-ray Double Features Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros. and the previously released 19-disc collection will now include the feature-length The Eastwood Factor Extended Version.

Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Toilet Cleaning System and Gel Giveaway

Let’s be honest for a minute here, ok. I am not a good house keeper. I keep all cleaning of the house to a bare minimum. Cleaning is just not important to me. It’s not important to my husband either, but more often than not, when it comes to cleaning the bathroom he does it.

I will; however, clean when I get to test a new product. Yes please laugh and point in my direction, I just love testing new products.

Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning GelI used the Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel quite a while ago when it first came out and it was a disaster. Because I was in such a hurry, I didn’t stop and read the directions. I used the whole package all in one sitting and I have to say it isn’t the best idea to do that. The Gel is extremely strong smelling. It’s a clean smell but strong.

The Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel keeps toilet bowls clean and fresh in between regular deep cleanings, and is more hygienic than other continuous toilet bowl cleaners, because you don’t have to touch it when you replace it! Each time the toilet is flushed, a small amount of gel dissolves, circulates around the toilet bowl quickly coating the surface to prevent buildup of limescale and toilet rings.

The Toilet Cleaning Gel is an easy to use dispenser that keeps you from needing to touch your toilet. The gel holder contains six gel discs to place in your toilet.

Save now:

Visit www.RightatHome.com for a fresh deal from Scrubbing Bubbles. For a limited time, buy one Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel and get a Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush 2 in 1 starter kit or refill free.

Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush® 2-in-1The two in one Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Toilet Cleaning System is really cool because the cleaning pads are flushable. Each kit includes a handle, a storage hook, two max refill pads and four flushable pads. I really like how the handle is curved, it makes it really easy to reach in and get under the rim.

The Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Toilet Cleaning System has cleaning pads to tackle both tough stains and quick touch-ups, neither of which you have to touch. Just click in the pad into the handle, scrub, and either toss or flush the pad depending on which one you use (Max for tough stains and Flushables for quicker cleanings)!

Theme Changes – Genesis

I’m really enjoying using Genesis, from Studiopress and how easy it is to change my site. I’m probably going to switch to one of the new child themes in a few months, but keep the same background. For now though, I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that all new content can be found at the bottom of the page.

I have four categories that will change from time to time depending on what I’m updating the most. But if you are looking for new content it’s always going to be at the bottom.

See snapshot

The very bottom says “Recent Articles on Mom Start.

I’ve also been playing with a lot of different comment plug ins. I think I finally have them all set up so that I can talk to everyone easier, with replies and e-mails to you. I always try to respond to twitter though. So feel free to contact me there.

2 Ways to Help a Child this Summer

My husband and I once had the opportunity to take care of a family member in need. She desperately needed a stable environment and in the short time she stayed with us I wanted to make her my own child. I wanted to adopt her and keep her forever. Circumstances did not allow us to do this, but it did show us both how great the need is for children out in the world. A loving family and stable support system makes such a great difference in the lives of children out there. There are ways you can help.

Adopt a Child:

Did you know it would take less than 1% of the U.S. population to provide a family for every child in foster care?  I had no idea that number was so low. I know that adopting babies is really a popular way to go, and that people believe that older kids come with problems. It’s not completely true, mostly they just need a loving stable home.

May is National Foster Care Month and there has never been a greater need to bring attention to children waiting for forever homes.  More than 463,000 children are currently in foster care and 123,000 children are waiting to be adopted.

Click to watch video

Children in foster care are loving children.  They are children like Shaquane and Edlina and Albert.  I believe that every child deserves to have a home with caring and supportive parents.

Help us spread the message this month to reach all Americans and teach them about the love and joy that foster care adoption can bring to your life. Visit www.adoptuskids.org to learn more about fostering and adopting. You can also join our online communities on Facebook and Twitter

Join Global Influence on  May 27 at 2 p.m. EST on Twitter for an #AdoptUsKids one hour chat to get the message out about National Foster Care Month.

Foster A Child:

The Fresh Air fund has found a very generous donor that is going to match all donations made now through June 30th to the program. What is the Fresh Air Fund?

The Fresh Air Fund is a summer program that fosters children in the Northeast and provides them with so many opportunities that they would not have. The Fresh Air Fund is in need of host families. If you or someone you know is able to host, please sign up now.

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund‘s Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes FOR up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.
The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

3M Filtrete wants Moms Stress Free When Thinking of Home Keeping

At our old house the only filter we used for our heater was 3M’s brand Filtrete. They have the most options for filter types, our favorite being the allergen filter. That’s what I called it anyway, they have good, better and best; and we were using best because it captures at least 90We had two large hairy dogs and the hair was everywhere, so it helped quite a bit to be using an allergen filter.  The only reason we aren’t still using t% of the large airborne particles. The only reason m is because the heater in our new house uses a 2” filter and we can’t find a 2” in their brand. 3M’s brand Filtrete wants moms to have time to worry about other things, and not how clean the house is.

When it comes to the routine of cleaning, homeowners tend to be more concerned with stacks of dirty dishes (66 percent), piles of laundry (58 percent) and dust balls on their carpet (57 percent), according to a survey commissioned by 3M, maker of Filtrete air cleaning filters. But they often forget about other areas of the home – such as bedding, shower doors and even stuffed animals – that can be breeding grounds for bacteria, mildew, dust mites and foul odors.

To keep your mind at ease, they have teamed up with Healthy Housekeeper Laura Dellutri, author of The Overworked Mom’s Stress Free Home Keeping to offers these tips:

Start at the Top: Ceiling fans, tall mantles and bookshelves, and the tops of door frames tend to subscribe to the “out of sight, out of mind” motto. These areas often harbor dust, so it’s important to wipe them down regularly to help remove dust buildup. Start at the top and work your way down, collecting all of the dust and dirt that falls to the floor while you’re cleaning.

Wipe Down Windows and Walls: Don’t clean windows the old fashioned way – newspaper can cause ink residue and paper towels leave lint behind. Your best bet is to use microfiber cleaning cloths and a professional window squeegee to get a streak-free, spotless shine. To prevent streaks on shower doors and walls, apply lemon oil to the door twice a month. This will help repel soap scum and shampoo, while also adding a nice shine.

Think Horizontally: Dust mites are nearly everywhere. In fact, the American Lung Association estimates that roughly four out of five homes in the United States have detectable levels of dust mite allergen in at least one bed. Reduce dust mites by encasing your mattress and pillows, and wash your bedding in hot water about once a week. Also, since dust mites are microscopic, place strips of duct tape on the mattress case to prevent the dust mites from sneaking through.

Clean the In-between: While cleaning what you can see, don’t forget to clean what you can’t see – the air you breathe. Use a high performance air filter in the home, such as the Filtrete 1” Ultimate Allergen Reduction filter from 3M, to help capture particles such as pollen, smoke, dust mite debris and pet dander from the air that passes through the filter. Be sure to change your filter at the start of every season, or every three months.

Freeze the Fur: Stuffed animals can harbor dust mites so it’s important to pay special attention to them. Place stuffed animals in a large plastic bag and freeze them for four to five hours. Remove them from the freezer and plastic bag, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove any leftover dust particles.

Finish With Floors: To keep floors in tip-top shape, vacuum and clean them weekly. You can easily make your own floor cleaner by adding a few drops of mild liquid dish detergent to a gallon of water. Hot water can break down floor finishes after time so use water that is barely warm. Finally, don’t forget to clean the floor under large pieces of furniture, which may require you to temporarily move them elsewhere. Corners of rooms and the back of closets often are overlooked, so be sure to clean these areas as well.

I lost my keys

image Yesterday I took my kids outside at about 4 and we went to play at the park and check the mail. I used my keys to get the mail out and then we walked for a while, then played like we do every day. We went home and played some more. Somewhere in-between there and here I lost my keys without knowing it.

We always pick up my husband from the bus stop at 5. I get the kids ready at 4:45 so that we can be all loaded up and on the way in enough time to get there just before the bus does. I have shoes on both kids, the diaper bag ready, phone in my hand and umm, I can’t find my keys.

Panic, stress, and frustration hit me all at once, as I start tearing the house I just cleaned apart to find those keys. I looked in my kids toys, I looked on all the counters, I have exhausted places to look. I beg the kids to look and ask them if they have seen mommy’s keys. Zoe says, “I know where you keys are”, I ask her, “where, please get them for mommy we are going to be late picking up daddy.” Then she says, “I don’t know where they are, they could be anywhere”. “They could be anywhere” is usually one of the cutest things that she says, but at that moment, it was mostly frustrating.

So I call my husband to tell him that I can’t find my keys, and I didn’t want to make this call because he has told me before that if I put my keys in the same spot every day that I would not lose them. Easier said than done, I’m utterly unorganized and haven’t a clue on how to get organized.

I repeat my search, looking deeper into the kids toy bins, dumping them all out into the floor, look in all the drawers and empty them onto the counter tops. I looked in the garage and in my front door. I still couldn’t find them, I began to wonder if maybe I left them at the mailbox. As I was considering running to the mail box to check, I put my hands on my hips and suddenly I hear the van unlock in the garage. Ah Hah! One of the kids is playing with my keys. I automatically assume that it was my son. I run over to him and say where are the keys, he looks at me like I’m crazy. I put my hands on my hips again and say, “where are my keys?” and as the words are coming out of my mouth, I feel them in my back pocket of my pants. I never put anything in those pockets.

So finally we were able to load up and get into the van to pick my husband up from the bus stop. Which, he was quite happy for us to be late because the bus stop is in the Staples parking lot. My husband went shopping while I was running around like a chicken with their head caught off.

Chili’s Grill and Bar Sponsor Take the Night off Giveaway

I feel like a big dork. I wrote to Chili’s because I love eating there. When I found out that they have a new fresh tasting menu I wanted to go try it out. I asked them to send me a gift card to use so I could write a review on my blog. They sent me one, and I packed up my whole family to head off to chili’s only to find that every Chili’s in our area had closed. I mean, the windows are all boarded up. I’m so sad, I was really looking forward to eating at Chili’s. I love Chili’s so much it would have been very difficult to sway from my favorites to try something new.

I love their Skillet Queso and chips

I love their Chicken Crispers and Seasoned Corn

I love their Chicken Salad Options

I could go on and on with what I already love there, the new items are supposed to be lighter and fresh. So I really envy all of you who still have one close by. I am so hungry after writing this post. MMMM, Chilis!
