Giving a little back to our pets

Have you ever stopped to really think about what pets matter to us? Many of us have pets but do we always think about how much better and richer our lives really are with them? When you go about your day, are you fully appreciating what your pets do for you?

I was reflecting on this and began to think about how my little dogs make some of the smallest things in life that much better. My walk in the morning is more comforting with their company, the barbecue outside is more enjoyable when they beg for scraps, and settling in to bed is more relaxing when they jump on the bed to cuddle.

I began to wonder if we give pets enough credit and was a bit concerned that we don’t. Then I went to the pet store.

I walked down the aisle looking for the moist treat my dogs love (the lamb and rice flavor). As I was making the decision on whether or not to give the chicken and rice a try or go with beef and lamb, I stood back for a second. I looked to my right and saw some organic hypoallergenic herbal pet shampoo. Behind me was a coupon for all natural grass fed beef treats. To my left were some seasonal outfits for small dogs. I went a little further down the isle and saw some aromatherapy treatment to relax dogs. There was a tasty looking filling that you’re supposed to stuff into your dogs toy to make it more fun. With virtually no end to the specialized products for pets, I realized that we do care. We care a lot. We do give pets the credit they deserve.

As a whole, I think people love their pets and do them right. I don’t even eat organic grass fed beef but I would definitely consider it for my dogs if it was better for them. I’d like to say this was true for every pet owner but I really think that if you look around, people do try to do the right things for their pets. I recently came across a graphic at the pet insurance center which shows some of the pet industry numbers and it became really clear to me how much people are willing to spend on their loving little ones to make their lives better.

Pets do a wonderful thing for us and that should never be taken for granted. I’m just glad that sometimes are good to them too.

As much as I consider my dog to be a pain in the rear, he’s a huge part of our family. He brings my daughter, especially, so much joy. He’s been such a good boy and we pamper him whenever possible.
