Fitness Friday – I need to focus

My Computer calls me every day and I get so distracted. I’m not doing what I need to do for my body. I have plenty of time during the day because after getting up at six I no longer sit in the chair with the kids and go back to sleep while I let them watch Dora or some other crazy kids DVD.

At least the sun has almost as strong of a pull on me as the computer. It pulls me to go outside and that’s what is healthy for my children. I need to do more than I already do. Today it was cold though, it was hard for me to stay outside. Oh how I hate the cold.

So is it needless to say that this week was a waste. I did not exercise, I ate brownies, Godiva truffles, and very fattening meals. GO ME!

I can do better!

I will do better!

Tyson Frozen Grilled and Ready Chicken Review and #giveaway

Tyson Inside my freezer is dinner tonight. Tyson Grilled chicken strips are ready to serve. I’ve used them before and love how easy it is. In fact, it’s on the menu tonight. All I have to do is put the amount I want to use in the skillet and it’s ready in 3 to five minutes. I like to use a little water or oil depending on what mood I’m in, but you don’t need either. Most of the time, I just make enough for myself and I heat it up in the microwave. I put a paper towel on a paper plate and then cover it up with another paper towel and then microwave for the time on the package, I think it’s 3 minutes. Be sure to follow the directions on the back of the bag for best results.

The perfect addition to a salad, entrée or sandwich, Tyson’s Grilled & Ready Whole Chicken Breast Fillets are ready to go from the freezer to the pan to the plate in less than 5 minutes. Tyson’s Grilled Fillets are 98% fat free, contain no preservatives, so it provides lean, quality protein that moms can feel good about serving to their families. While the grill is in hibernation during the winter, Tyson Grilled & Ready Chicken Breast Fillets offer that great grilled taste without the grill.

20632_16178-0910

So tonight, I’m going to cook it on the skillet and add a little garlic for flavor. I’m sure the options of how you can season it or add marinades is endless, just do a coupon match up and dinner is on the table. In fact, Tyson has given me a coupon to facilitate this review and I have three more to giveaway to one lucky reader. That’s three bags valued at 9.99 each for you to enjoy. I’m also making some pasta to go with it. It’s something that my husband really likes.

You can win three free product coupons from Tyson valued at 9.99 each.

Children’s Book Reviews: Snow Takes the Checker! Quickly: The Magic Spatula

Thanks to the Parent Reviewers I received two books to review, Snow Takes the Checker! and Quickly: The Magic Spatula.

http://snowtheracehorse.com/images/large_ttc.pngSnow takes the Checker is a cute book about Snow. It’ part of a series of stories about Snow the Racehorse and her family of racers. In Snow takes the Checker, you will follow Snow as she gets ready for the big animal race coming up. Her partner if you can believe it is a turtle and together they take the race. It’s a quick read and easy for my daughter to sit through as I read it. The fun whimsical  pictures appeal to children like my own and that’s why she keeps asking me to read it to her.

.

Quickly: The Magic SpatulaQuickly: The Magic Spatula, is a book going in the past when two adults find Quickly in an old box belonging to their mother. My husband and I work very hard to create memories for our children to cherish. I even write a series every now and then called Cooking with Kids. This is where my husband and I cook with our children. Just like in Quickly, I remember lots of times where my dad cooked waffles (pancakes in the book) but it was a time where all of us came together and sat as a family to eat. Spending time with family is quite important and building memories is easy. Just read Quickly: The Magic Spatula.

I was provided with these two books for a book tour by Parent Reviewers. All opinions are my own.

Win straight teeth with Invisalign and uncover the myths of invisible teeth straightening

Invisalign is offering a free invisalign treatment in conjunction with Varsity.

Over one million patients worldwide have straightened their teeth with Invisalign. As part of our partnership with Varsity, we’re offering one lucky winner FREE treatment for yourself or a family member in our Invisalign Cheer Sweepstakes.

Winner will be chosen at random from all entries received through May 31, 2010. See the official rules. It is open to adults and teens, not just teens. Find out why Invisalign is becoming the clear choice for straightening teeth, visit www.invisalignteen.com for more information.

Uncover the Myths:

Myth #1: “I’ve/my child has had Invisalign before as a retainer” or “I’ve used this before for teeth whitening”

Debunked: Invisalign is NOT a retainer or teeth whitening system. Also known as “clear braces,” Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth without metal or wires. After detailed impressions are taken of the teeth, the dentist or orthodontist utilizes proprietary 3D computer imaging technology to carefully map the patient’s complete treatment from start to finish. Patients wear each aligner for about two weeks. During this time, the aligners gradually move the teeth until they achieve the prescribed final position. Parents typically visit their doctor once every six weeks or so to ensure that treatment is progressing as planned and make necessary adjustments

Myth #2: “I thought Invisalign was only available for adults.”

Debunked: Invisalign worked with leading orthodontists to develop a product made especially for teens to meet their unique treatment and compliance needs as well as one that fits with their activelifestyles. An effective alternative to metal braces, the new Invisalign Teen product combines the benefits of the proven Invisalign system with new features like blue Compliance Indicators that are designed to gradually fade as the aligner is worn, Eruption Tabs that accommodate the growth of secondary molars, and Power Ridges, which provide additional force in cases where certain types of root movement are prescribed. Invisalign Teen also includes a replacement guarantee for up to six lost aligners, for added insurance.

Myth #3: “Invisalign must be more expensive than braces.”

Debunked: Every patient’s needs are different and there are many factors that determine the cost of Invisalign treatment. But, Invisalign is often comparable in cost to traditional braces, is covered by most insurance, and financing options are frequently available.

Myth #4: “It must take much longer for Invisalign to work vs. braces”

Debunked: Actually, the total treatment time with Invisalign averages between nine and 15 months and the number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30.

Myth #5: “I heard Invisalign could only be used to treat minor orthodontic issues, not severe or complex ones.”

Debunked: Invisalign is versatile and can help correct a broad range of dental and orthodontic issues including: Overly crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, crossbite, overbite and underbite.  And as with any medical service, consider getting a second opinion if you are told that you or your child is not a candidate.  Not all dentist and orthodontists are certified Invisalign providers. Visit Invisalign.com and use the doctor locator to find qualified physicians in your area.

Bonus Myth #6: “The benefits of Invisalign for my child’s teeth straightening are purely cosmetic.”

Debunked: Since Invisalign aligners are comfortable and durable, it is easy for teens to continue their favorite activities such as playing sports and musical instruments. There are no dangerous wires or uncomfortable metal brackets poking or tearing their mouth and gums, which provides a safer option for active teens. And since teens can take the aligners out to brush and floss, they can maintain normal, healthy hygiene during their treatment – an important message that aligns with the mission of  National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness of the importance of oral health.

Get a Piece of your Own Country Inn(troduction) Party #giveaway

When I was at Blissdom I went to the Country Inn(troduction) party held at Country Inns & Suites. I left the first Blissdom party early. Being the first party and held in a small place, Jack Daniels, I felt like a fly on the wall because of how full it was. I was overwhelmed, hot and it was loud. They turned up the music when the conversation got loud so the conversation only got louder. I couldn’t hear a think, so I went to the Country Inn party and had a great time there.

While I was waiting outside for the bus, my friend Courtney from Courtney Speaks and I found some other bloggers. Erin from JANE4girls and Bay from Queen Mother Blog. After Inn(troductions) were made we all went straight to the party room (the swag room). Everyone was so nice, and it was small and intimate. I feel that since it had started an hour and a half earlier we missed the crowd. We tried different Cohutta Springs wines, some Steaz Tea and picked up some sample bottles of Country Bob’s, and The Village Company’s new moisturizing hand soap.

Here is a great summary video from Country Inn & Suites.

They were interviewing bloggers (sadly I missed out on this wonderful opportunity, but Bay is up there) to find different people to work with on a whole bunch of exciting campaigns they have going on this year. Like their 500th hotel opening up in the US, but I can’t say where it’s going to be and they aren’t even sure yet. So look out in the blogging world for exciting announcements and giveaways coming to you courtesy of Country Inn and Suites.

It was also a learning experience illustrating how nice the accommodations and amenities are.

Pajama Party: Featuring Curious George 2: Follow that Monkey DVD #giveaway

curiousgeorge Universal Studios sent my family a copy of Curious George 2: Follow that Monkey to preview before it comes out next week. Can you believe that next week is March? Both of my children were excited to watch Curious George, it was my son that took the DVD from me first and that’s usually his sister’s job.

We watched it as our evening family movie, as I’ve cut almost all of our daytime tv. As I sat down to watch it I didn’t expect to enjoy it; I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be silly and was laughing along with my children. That silly mischievous monkey. No wait, Ted would say, “He’s curious, very curious!”.

George finds out that there is a circus in town and he really wants to go because there is an elephant in it. Kayla is a cute blue baby elephant and she really is blue. She’s homesick for her family. George understand her pain and wants to see her smile, so he takes off on a coast-to-coast journey with Ted barely able to keep up. Follow that monkey features an all-star voice talent including Tim Curry (“The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” Home Alone 2: Lost in New York), Jamie Kennedy (Kickin’ It Old School, Malibu’s Most Wanted), Matt Lauer (“Today Show”), Frank Welker (“Curious George” TV series, “Futurama,”) and comedy legend Jerry Lewis, plus music from legendary songwriter Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

The music is child like and soft and captivated my daughter from beginning to end. It’s a great movie to enjoy as a family and sure to leave a smile on everyone’s face.

Leap Frog:Math Adventures to the Moon and Teaching Preschool kids math

LF_MAM_ocard6.indd Teaching kids math is pretty easy once they learn to count. So first you need to teach them number recognition and sequences. Leap Frog has an entire system to get kids ready for learning math. The first is with Leap Frog’s new movie Math Adventure to the Moon. Lionsgate sent me a copy of the DVD to review in honor of Math Day, March 14th, and I like watching it with my kids.

Tad and Lilly are trying to count in the beginning and Tad can’t get past the number four. So their friend Edison transports them to a Spaceship where they can fly to the moon.  This space ship helps them with their counting when it only allows them to take 10 items on the ship with them. Ha Ha, ten items, thanks Leap Frog for the adult humor. Part of math includes counting in different intervals and learning sequences and I was glad that Leap Frog included both of these in their math adventure. Tad and Lilly never made it to the moon. On the way they ran into a space storm and crashed onto a cute cube planet; where they had to do even more counting before they could return home.

LeapFrog: Math Adventure to the Moon is great for kids and parents alike as it encourages a shared and interactive educational experience that allows parents to watch their kids learn! You can purchase the DVD and see clips from the new film at http://www.leapfrogdvds.com

Also included in Leap Frog’s arsenal for preschool kids and toddlers are math toys that only re-enforce all of their other teachings. Remember it’s through repetition and interaction that your children are going to learn.

They also shared math tips with me to share with you.

TIP #1:  Math is everywhere!

Next time you’re in a waiting room with your child, scan the room (or the magazines on the tables) for evidence of "math."  Advise your child to find as much math as possible, and you can give clues if you need to.  Numbers, patterns, shapes, categories, and measuring devices (e.g., ruler, scales), are just a few examples of some of the math you might see all around you!

TIP #2:  Patterns and Codes are All Around Us!

Make patterns using standard household objects.  For example line up repeated objects–sock, stuffed animal, sock, stuffed animal, and so on. Next, ask your child to continue the pattern to figure out the "secret code."  You can vary the difficulty of the pattern to suit your child’s ability–banana, banana, pear, banana, banana, pear.  You can also make deliberate errors that your child needs to find–pear, apple, bananna, pear, apple, banana, pear, pear, banana.

TIP #3:  Play the Sorting Game!
Take a deck of cards, and discuss with your child all the ways you can sort the cards.  They can be sorted by color (red versus black), suit (spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs), numbers (2′s, 3′s, etc.), royalty versus numbers (jacks, queens, and kings versus the numbers), odd versus even numbers, etc.  Sky is the limit!  You can play the sorting game with many collections of things around the house, such as socks and building  blocks.

TIP #4:  Since It’s the Weekend — Make it a game night!

Playing number-related, age-appropriate board games, such as Chutes and Ladders, can help support many math-related skills.  For an important twist, help your child practice saying each number he or she lands on and passes by with each roll of the dice. For example, if your child is on 23 and rolls a four, help him or her say "24, 25, 26, 27" instead of "1, 2, 3, 4."  This way, your child can learn about order and magnitude (i.e., how large or small a number is in relation to other numbers).

TIP #5:  Count-down for Launch!

You and Your Kids can pretend to be rocket ships set for launch.  Practice counting down to blast-off!  You can make the challenge as easy or difficult as you want remembering that you don’t have to start counting down from 10.  You and your kids can count down by ones (e.g., 17, 16, 15, 14…) or  Practice counting by 2′s (e.g., 25, 23, 21, 19…)!    For advanced math students, try multiples (e.g., 21, 18, 15, 12…)!
