How to speak to your children about tragedy

Talking to kids about tragedy

Talking to children about tragedy is a job most parents would love to avoid. If only our children did not need to hear about things like this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. But of course, they do hear. And they are full of questions: Could this happen to me? What’s going to happen to the children? Can I do anything to help the children I see on TV?

World Vision US, a Christian humanitarian relief organization with hundreds of staff on the ground in Haiti, suggests eight ways to make a tough job a little bit easier.

1. Start by listening.

Find out what your kids already know. You can then respond in an age-appropriate way. The aim is not to worry them with the devastating details, but to protect them from misinformation they may have heard from friends or disturbing images they may have seen on television.

2. Provide clear, simple answers.

Limit your answer to the question asked and use simple language.

3. If you don’t know the answer, admit it
If your child asks a question that you can’t answer, tell them so, and then do some research to try and help them sort it out. If they ask “Why did this have to happen?” don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.” If you are part of a faith community, the reassurance offered there can be invaluable in helping your child sort through the awful truth that awful things happen.

4. Follow media reports or online updates privately.

Young children in particular are easily traumatized, and seeing or hearing about the horrifying details of the quake are more than they can cope with. Adults, too, should ensure they are dealing with their own emotions by talking to others, so they can continue to respond well to their children’s need.

5. Concentrate on making them feel safe.

When tragedies occur, children wonder if the same event could happen in their hometown. If it was an act of nature that could not be repeated in your area, tell children that. Placing themselves in the situations of victims is not all bad—it is a sign of empathy, an essential life skill, but watch for signs of excessive worrying.

6. Give children creative outlets. Some children may not be prepared to speak about what they have heard, but may find drawing or other creative activities helpful to deal with their emotions and stress. Their drawings can be helpful starting points for conversation.

7. Model involvement and compassion.

Tell your child that, as a family, you will be helping the people in Haiti by giving a donation to a reputable charity such as World Vision.

8. Give your child a chance to be involved.

Being involved in the solution will help relieve some of their anxiety. Invite them to contribute to the family’s gift by giving something out of their piggy bank.

This article was presented to me by World Vision. No compensation was received, I’m posting it because I feel that it is important to know how to talk to your children about tragedy and things that happen in the world that make us all feel sad.

Word World My Fuzzy Valentine

Welcome to the place where words come alive. Word World! Word World has become one of my favorite shows because it encourages the recognition of words. I’m sure my daughter can see that with all that she catches on to.  I was first introduced to Word World when I was at another Moms house. her kids were watching it and it was after I had been working on letters with my daughter. She said ‘e’ and there was an e. I was so excited, she was only 2 years old and recognized the letter. Wow, the same story every time I watch a word world video.

How about a new one, my husband does not like Word World and I can’t for the life of me figure out why? I love watching Word World. It comes on PBS and is put out on DVD’s by NCircle Entertainment. My kids love watching Word World. It’s entertaining and teaches them words with letters and the turns them into pictures. It’s a very visual presentation. Lots of people are visual learners.

This Word World DVD comes with two different episodes.  Both are sure to get everyone in the mood for Valentine’s Day!

My Fuzzy Valentine:

When SHEEP decides she wants to make a special Valentine song for her pal BEAR, she runs into trouble finding the perfect rhyme and makes BEAR a Valentine song with real heart.

The Love Bug:

BUG wants to sign a Valentine for his favorite WordFriend, but he doesn’t know how to write his name. With lots of encouragement from FROG he learns that with a little practice, he can write his name.

My favorite out of the two was watching My Fuzzy Valentine. It was really cute watching sheep try to come up with just the right rhyme and we used this opportunity to start teaching Zoe how to rhyme.

NCircle was kind enough to send us a copy of  My Fuzzy Valentine dvd it retails for only 5.99 US$. (I think this is a great price for this educational show).  A Department of Education funded study has shown that WordWorld improves a child’s literacy skills.

Thanks to NCircle Entertainment we were sent My Fuzzy Valentine, one of the newer WordWorld releases…just in time for Valentines day!

50.00 American Express #Giveaway sponsored by Goby.com

gobyLogo_blueBoxA perfect tool for busy moms, Goby.com (pronounced GO-be) is a new one-of-a-kind search engine that helps you find fun new ways to spend your free time. It searches more than 300 different categories of “things to do” from zoos and aquariums to playgrounds and children’s museums.  Goby poses three questions: What, Where and When.  By answering just two of the three questions, you can instantly receive an easy-to-read results page that includes not only detailed information about attractions, activities, locations and events, but also an interactive map and photos from sites like Google and Flickr.  Check out Goby.com today and be inspired by the myriad of things you can do!

Goby.com contacted me and asked me to share a giveaway with my readers. The first thing I did was check out their site. Goby is a great site for families or anyone looking to go on a trip. It is a search engine that about finding things to do. I found the search to be accurate. I think that with google and other search engines you have to be specific, and it’s hard sometimes to create the results you are actually looking for. Goby organizes your query results in a meaningful way instead of spitting back a series of web pages that happen to contain your key words. For taking trips and finding things to do, Goby is the place to go. Goby was co-founded by Mark Watkins and Vince Russo from Endeca and Lycos, respectively, and noted tech entrepreneur and MIT professor Mike Stonebraker.

Interior Design – Decorating my Son’s room with The Studio Danielson Designs

danielsondesignslogo Back in June when right before my life was turned upside down with buying and selling a house Danielson Designs offered to send me a personalized wall plaque. I said yes and right after that everything went crazy. We sold our house and I had to pack it up as soon as it arrived, I was very sad because it deserved to be hung up immediately.

Now that I’ve been in my house for over four months I have realized that I haven’t gotten to decorating anything. Putting up the tree and a few nicknacks was all we did for Christmas and after taking all the decorations down the house looked too empty. Too Plain!

With completely blank walls staring back at me, I was terrified to put a  brand new nail hole in the wall. These are virgin walls don’t you know! The inspiration to start putting holes in my walls came from my Christmas present. For Christmas I received a bunch of picture frames. My husband picked them out and filled them with photos. So then I just had to put a hole in the wall.

Since we were finally courageous enough to start putting holes in the wall we decided that we could hang up the plaque in Mile’s room.

danielsondesigns

Miles Elliot, “You will always be LOVED. ALL THE WAY to the moon & back!” These words are so true. My kids are my world. Now, I’m not where near done decorating the house or deciding what to put where. This is in Mile’s room above the changing table. It’s the only thing on the wall for now, and it’s centered horizontally between the window and the closet and centered vertically between the ceiling and the changing table. My husband has the laser leveler and loves using it. He’s actually a little OCD if you know what I mean. But we still love him. So it was a project we did together. I told him where and he did the hanging.

I realize now I should have taken another photo of the entire wall so you could get a little more perspective but at least you can see how nice the plaque looks. It’s solid wood with the design painted on. I love it. I’m very grateful for the free product that The Studio Danielson Designs sent me.

The Studio ships orders in 48 hours and designing is done is 3 easy steps. First, you choose a product template from their extensive gallery. I chose the Child’s Name Sign that retails for 39.95. You can watch the demo if you want but it’s so easy. Second step is to change the text that you are allowed to personalize and or choose the color option you want. The third step is to save design and add to cart. Easy!

They have Personalized Plaques, personalized picture frames, personalized awards, and personalized monograms. It took me a long time to decide, but since I was still in my old house the only room I could think we needed something in was Mile’s. Now, I need something for my own room.

They sent me this free product with no expectations of posting. They just “hoped” I would like it enough to post about it, and I do!!!

Juice Box Heroes No Sugar Added Review and #giveaway

The 80’s are back!

I was a child of the 80’s and loved the music that I grew up with. My birthday was 1980 (don’t go calculating my age now) and my mother listened to all of the current music. I can still remember driving in the car with her and listening to different songs, like Walk like and Egyptian and Material Girl.

Juice Box Heroes has taken songs that parents will remember (mostly from the 80s) and re-written the lyrics for kids! They have received a lot of great local press (newspapers, TV) and were recently featured in Daily Candy, LilSugar and won Dr. Toy’s "Best Picks/New Products" award. Their CD is called No Sugar Added.

Juice Box Heroes

I gotta have cake, mmm. Oh what i kid would do to get some cake. it’s good because it sings about kids needing to eat all the good stuff before mom will give them more cake. But hey, I know all about having that weak spot for sweets.

Before I listened to the CD, I was trying to fit all the numbers 1-9 into the song Jenny (8675309) and I couldn’t get them all to fit correctly. I’m not so imaginative. ;-) . But they fit great in their song.

These songs are great so we’re adding this cd to our morning “active” music playlist. I need to get my kids moving, well me too. I’m not burning calories from my Lazy-Boy chair. Dancing with kids is a great way to get the entire family moving more.

I think Mile’s favorite song was track number three, One Year old, he was going, na na na na na na. I love it when music inspires my kids to get to singing and dancing. But he also seemed to like singing out Puppy’s Fur. Then he also started singing to When I’m Big I want Braces, to the tune of Garth Brooks’ Friends in low places. LOVE IT. He’s the cutest little red head EVER! He seems to just love this CD in general.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite because I just adore 80’s music.

Juice Box Heroes generously decided to offer a giveaway to one of my readers. Yeah! So you can enter to win a great children’s CD. Are you a child of the 80’s.

Mead Johnson Lost Suit against PBM Products

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of PBM Products. All opinions are 100% mine.

bottle of formulaFormula is a touchy subject for me. I breasted one of my children for an entire year and quit because I was so pregnant with my second child I could no longer keep enough nutrition in my own body. When my son was born I was unable to produce enough milk to feed him so I was forced to give him formula. I had no idea what was what and even after a few months he had to be on specialized formula. We were given samples from the doctor’s office and only considered those as options and both of them were name brands. So I assumed not all formulas are created equally. And I was quite upset at spending so much money on formula.

There is quite a different in price in specialized formula and regular formula and an even further difference in off brand and name brand. PBM Products filed a suit against Mead Johnson for false advertising. PBM products was awarded $13.5 million because it was found that store brands meet all the same standards that Mead Johnson meets. They claimed that Mead Johnson was falsely advertising against PBM’s competing store-brand of infant formulas. They went further to say that they do not provide the same nutrition as Mead Johnson’s brands. This winning is one of the largest awards ever for a false advertising case. You can find PBM’s store brands at Target, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart. PBM’s products are 50 percent cheaper than Mead Johnson’s saving families as much as 600.00 a year.

Companies should think twice before they say negative things about other companies.

The Invention of Lying

Could you imagine a world where there are no lying. Not only no lying but you say whatever is on your mind. Ha! I could not live in a world like that. I mean, I suppose If I was raised with the complete truth, even hurtful truth then I could deal with it. Watching a world like this was the funniest thing I’ve seen in months.

The Invention of Lying was so funny from the beginning to end. It was just released to DVD on January 19, 2010.

The Invention of LyingThe movie began with talk of “personal time” in Anna’s (Jennifer Garner) apartment. I was thinking that the entire movie was going to be dirty but it cleaned up and was just funny. Mark (Ricky Garvais) discovered that he could lie. He even tried to teach his friends but they never caught on to the fact that he was lying. They believed it every time he told them his name was something different. Mark is quite a decent guy, because he told a woman that the world was going to end if they didn’t sleep together and then he realized how wrong it was to take advantage of her so he pretended that NASA called him to say it was cancelled.

When his mother dies, he invents the man in the sky and then there is a lot of humor about the rules from the man in the sky. Between these rules being announced and Mark’s ability to lie he becomes rich and famous. But even with his fame he is still unable to win the love of his life’s heart. She thinks he’s too fat and has a snubby nose. But it doesn’t end there.

The line up of actors was amazing. I love Tina Fey, Rob Low and Jennifer Garner is always fabulous.

Warner Brothers sent me this DVD to review, no other compensation was received.

Clive Owen Brings me to tears in The Boys are Back

Clive Owen Stars in a Deeply Moving Tale of a Man Who Finds Himself
Suddenly Responsible For Raising Two Sons Alone
From Miramax Films
THE BOYS ARE BACK
Available on DVD January 26, 2010

“One of the year’s best pictures” — Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail

*

The Boys Are Back brought tears, I was brought tons of tears with this movie. Clive Owen is a halfway father to one child and a dead beat dad to the other. Then his wife dies and he is solely responsible for one of his children. He doesn’t know how to be a father and grandma wants to take care of the kid. He refuses to let his mother-in-law raise his child so he takes off on an adventure to find himself. He finally has to go back to work and is trying to get a handle on things. He’s in the middle of failing miserably and his ex-wife decides to send his other son to him to live. He wants to say no, but also wants to get to know his other son. So now he’s a father of two, a teenager and an Elementary kid, all on his own. The worst part of all of it is that his job requires him to travel.

I was shocked when he left his teenager to take care of his younger son. They hardly knew each other and disaster strikes and the grandparents have to step in. Yikes! This was the breaking point for him. He realized he was going to have to become the parent and stop being the friend that always says yes. He has to prove to both of his sons that he can be the father they need him to be and he finally is. This movie is based on a true story of a father restoring his relationship with his sons.

DVD Bonus Features
• The Boys Are Back: A Photographic Journey — A picture is worth a 1,000 words as
director Scott Hicks takes us on a pictorial tour of the making of the film.

The death of his wife leaves wisecracking sportswriter Joe Warr (Clive Owen) with a curious six

bring up in a household devoid of feminine influence. So Joe takes on parenting the only way he
knows how—full throttle. With an exuberance born of necessity, he teaches his boys to meet the
joy and fragility of life head on. The Boys Are Back chronicles the fierce love and loyalty the three
Warr men discover for each other as they make their way through the trials of everyday life.
