Green Tip: Buy Chemical Free Products This Year, Here’s Our Chemical Free Product List

This marks the last green tip from Summer in our 31 days of  Red and Green here on Mom Start. Hopefully Summer will grace us with many more green tips and steps on making our lives more eco friendly in the future. Her last tip is about buying chemical free products and these are her chemical free product selections.

Are you ready to begin the New Year? Moreover, is your house ready for the New Year? Try and make yourself greener in the New Year by purchasing products not tested on animals and chemical-free. It is ok to start off with small changes in your toiletries. You know, small changes like in your shampoo, conditioner, make-up, lotions, toothpaste, etc. are a great place to start. I’ll share with you some of my favorite chemical free products:

Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body WashTrader Joe’s Refresh (for about $2 a bottle it’s a steal)

LotionsSt. Ives lotion

Deodorant – Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant and Tom’s of Maine (make sure there’s no antiperspirant and that it’s aluminum free)

Lip Balm (and Other Beauty Products) – Burt’s Bees Lip Balm

Diaper CreamBurt’s Bees Diaper Cream

ToothpasteTom’s of Maine

In finding and using products like these I feel good about my body and the environment. If needed, take little steps to introduce products such as these into your home. These are products I actually use and love. Be sure, as with any new product, that you test new products on a small area of skin if you have sensitive skin or believe you may have a reaction on a product.

Thank you for joining me in my red and GREEN December 2010 adventures! Hope I gave you some great ideas that made you and yours healthier and happier. Happy New Year!

Much Deserved Mommy Time Nook Color Giveaway

Much Needed Mommy TimeAddicted is one word I would use to describe myself. Addicted to reading Twilight. Not just the first book either, but all four books. I read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn over and over. I’m on round five or six, I’ve actually lost track. These are very big books, and if I had to hold the book, my hands would ache. I have arthritis, but I love to read. There were a few years that I would only read for about 15 minutes at most before going to bed because my hands would start hurting.

Then, came the e-books.

Now, I can read the books over and over again, finish one of the books and jump directly into the next book. Someone has to actually remind me to go to sleep.

Which brings me to what would be my favorite mommy time kind of day?

Nook Color PackagingI would love to spend the day reading and not too long ago I did. I decided to take a break from my twilight obsession and I downloaded a new book (new to me at least). I downloaded Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins it took me about a week to read the first book then the second two, Catching Fire, and MockingJay I read in 3 days. I could not put my reader down, not even during the day. I sat on the couch with my ereader in hand and read for hours. I even like to read in the bath tub (but that’s just between us ok?)

The Barns & Noble Nook Color is an amazing way to spend your mommy time. Sit down, read a book, read a magazine, read a news paper, read a website or blog post. I mean, I love the way my blog looks on the nook color. The Barnes and Nobel Nook Color makes websites look more crisp and clearer then the iPad does.

But perhaps you might think of letting the kids play with it and you do something you really want to do. The kids story books are easy enough for the kids to do on their own. Check out Zoe and Miles in this video using the nook! Now this video is not the best quality. I had some lighting issues and a 2 and 3 year old that wanted their turn in the spotlight. So watch and enjoy!

Other Nook Color Features:

I love listening to Pandora
I love playing sodoku or the crossword puzzles
I love the color touch screen and that it remembers my place if I put the book down for a while
I love that I can share my reading experience from the Nook Color over social media such as twitter and facebook.

Green Ways to Dispose of Your Christmas Tree

Green Tip By Summer:

I promised a segment on what to do with your fresh tree post-Christmas so here are a few ideas on how to dispose of your Christmas Tree after Christmas.

- “Rural” – Forest living – Take your tree out to the wood and lay it on its side. Through the course of the year it will become a nursing log to new forest growth. The old will become new again! NOTE: Do NOT place your trees in random parks without permission or where “no dumping” signs are posted.

- “Suburban” – Wood burning abilities: Cut the branches from the trunk. Please don’t burn the branches as needles will be dry and burn too quickly. Place the branches either in a compose pile, in your individualized compost waste bin through your local garbage company, or place them on your property for animals to collect and use. Cut the trunk into appropriate pieces for your burning unit, and enjoy safely in your approved method of burning – fireplace, stove, or pit.

Boy Scouts of America- “Urban” or Everywhere! – Let your local Boy Scout troop haul your tree away for you. Boy Scout troops collect the trees and dispose of them properly. Most get stripped and mulched for use in local parks. The Boy Scouts of America take a nominal fee to do so and additional donations can be made if you wish. Just be sure you include your payment, and place your tree on the curb on the right day and time.

Can I Bubble You?

Zoe asked

Can I Bubble You. I had no idea what she meant. My husband just started laughing. Of course he knew exactly what she was talking about. So, he asked her if he could bubble her? She said yes!

So he gave her the biggest raspberry ever. I found out what Can I bubble you means and then the fun really started!

Screaming and laughter erupted in the room and Miles wanted one too. So daddy gave him a raspberry.

More screams and laughter. I had to put down my iPad and get a bubble too!

It took me two tries to give Zoe a really good one. That says something about mommy when she’s out of practice giving good raspberries don’t’ you think?

Zoe and Miles Hugging

It is in moments like these that make me remember how lucky I am to have two such loving children. They love to play together and always remind my husband and I that we need to stop what we are doing and just have a little bubble fun! So yes dear Zoe, you can Bubble me anytime!

Green Tip: How to Go Paperless, e-Statements, On-line Banking & Mobile Banking

Today’s green tip from Summer:

Start getting e-Statements for all those Christmas bills. Now that the big one has passed, go online before your bills start showing up at your house. Simply go online to your billing company’s site and let them know your desire to start the New Year going green. Check the back of your credit and bank cards for website information. You can also call the credit card company to get your paperless statements showing up.

We are mostly paperless at my house using Bank of America. We do a ton of on-line banking, but we still get a few statements and it’s such a waste because all we have to do is shred them. We hardly ever open up the bank statements. We’ve turned off as many paper bill statements as we can. Bank of America has a tip sheet on how to go banking paperless. You can also watch a video demo of going paperless in the new year.  How to go paperless

Did you know that you can set up everything to be automatically paid through your bank with automatic bill pay?

You can pay virtually anyone on-line through automatic bill pay. We’ve even found that it’s very easy to set up a new merchant if you need to pay someone. You can even set up a one time payment. We recently added our Home Owners Association to the automatic bill pay, because I certainly won’t remember to pay it. My husband is very thorough and makes sure that everything is paid every month.

Did you know that you can deposit your checks by taking a photo of them with your cell phone and using mobile banking? Bank of America Mobile Banking is available on different mobile platforms, including but not limited to iPad and iPhone.

With Mobile Banking from Bank of America, you can easily take your banking with you.* Check your balances, pay bills, transfer money, and locate ATMs and banking centers. Our Mobile Banking app is convenient, fast and free.

FEATURES
— Check account balances
— Pay bills and transfer funds**
— Find ATM and banking center locations using GPS, with no address input required (this is only available through our app, not on our mobile website)***
— Feel secure with our industry-leading mobile security and our Online Banking Security Guarantee

Now I’m sure I could write a five page document fully explaining on-line banking, mobile banking ,and how to go fully paperless next year, but I thought I would just set you up with a few easy steps to start off with! Good Luck going green!

This post was not sponsored, I did work with Bank of America last month, but we’ve used them for 3 years and been very happy with them.

Ahh Happy Wordless Wednesday

Go Electronic Get off the Mass Mailing Lists

Today’s Green Tip:

Get off all those catalog mailing lists! Did you know that by purchasing goods online, companies may’ve signed you up to their mailing lists? This year I received catalogs from As Seen On TV to Pottery Barn. So here’s the deal, go online to “Contact Us” for each catalog you received. From there you can find a drop down for getting off their mailing list. If this is proving difficult than wait for your next catalog and check the back which should tell you how to be removed from their list. You can also call the company to get removed from mailing lists. This isn’t telling the company that you don’t want to shop with them, you’re simply going paperless. By doing your part companies will begin to use less paper to print catalogs and lower mail carrier emissions due to fewer deliveries.

mailI know this takes a lot of time on our parts, but it’s important. Every single catalog I get goes straight into the recycling, and you may say, well at least it’s getting recycled. Yes, that is true, but even recycling uses valuable resources. Plus, I agree with Summer, if we get off the mailing lists then we are making companies think about moving to electronic catalogs.

I will admit, I love getting magazines and most of the magazines I’m subscribed to have coupons in them. That being said, coupons are moving to electronic form too. They are going as far as aps on phones, with no printing at all. Now we just need all of the grocery stores to catch up to the times too!

It is time that we all start thinking about green and eco friendly ways to live. Most things are really small but multiplied by each of us makes each step huge and profound. What is your fresh idea?

Party with Blue Bunny Ice Cream: Three Easy Ideas!

Blue Bunny Ice cream has some wonderful recipes and ideas on how to spruce up ice cream and use it as a festive party pleaser on their website. And I used Blue Bunny for two different parties this year.

For the first party, I took out all of the Christmas Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches and set out to make the Frozen Cookie Baklava. Yeah, I didn’t think about the details of making the recipe until the night of and was afraid to use lime juice in place of lemon juice, so I made it really simple instead. I cut up all the ice cream sandwiches into little triangles, and drizzled caramel all over the top. It was bite size ice cream made fancy for the party! And yea, I had a lot going on that night and didn’t get any photos. Christmas was quite quick this year, It’s the first year we were involved in church, the neighborhood, and pre-school. WOW, it’s been a blast, but I don’t know where all the time went either. Anyways, here is the recipe that inspired my ice cream creation!

Blue Bunny Frozen BaklavaBlue Bunny® Frozen Cookie Baklava

INGREDIENTS:
8 Blue Bunny®
Christmas Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches
3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/2 cup honey
1 tbsp. butter, melted
2 tsp. water
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
PREPARATION:
IMG_1076In a small bowl, stir together the walnuts, honey, butter, water, lemon juice and cinnamon.  Line a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper or non-stick heavy foil.  Place 4 ice cream sandwiches in prepared pan, cutting to fit.  Spread 1/2 the walnut mixture over the top; cover with remaining ice cream sandwiches, cutting to fit.  Spread remaining walnut mixture over the top; freeze at least 6 hours or until solid.  Cut into 12 triangles.  Serve immediately.
Makes 12 servings
Prep Time: 12 minutes*
*Freeze time extra

Blue Bunny Hot Cocoa Ice Cream BarsThe second party, I actually wasn’t even able to attend. So nothing special was created. I was able to pass off the Blue Bunny ice cream to a friend and she passed it around to all of our friends to try. I missed out because I love Blue Bunny. Locally, we don’t have Blue Bunny or any of their ice cream varieties. I miss Blue Bunny Ice Cream. I was really looking forward to trying the Hot Cocoa ice cream bars. Maybe next year I can do this again or go to a state that carries all of these wonderful Blue Bunny Holiday flavors and Blue Bunny Holiday Recipes.

This will be my final grand attempt at creating an ice cream treat for this year. I hope this goes well, and I’m going to have some better planning on my part.

Understanding Organic and Nature’s Path Organic Ancient Grains with Almonds

By Summer:

The rage these days seems to center around organic and natural products including food. I’ve never heard a parent say, “I want my family to eat poorly.” You’d laugh, right? But our food has become more processed and a far stretch from its original form. If you’re getting hip on health in the New Year, you might think of streaming these movies on Netflix: Super Size Me (PG-13) (2004) and Food, Inc. (PG)(2008). Lunch Line is another health film I’d recommend and is now in select theaters. These flicks will help you become a dietary advocate for your family if you’re thinking of ways to improve your family’s health in 2011.

Remember, just because an item claims to be organic or natural on the packaging doesn’t mean it’s good for you or better for the environment. Watch out for trick phases and claims as “made with organic ingredients,” as these products are not organic products but may just contain two organic ingredients or may not be certified organic. Look for the USDA Organic seal! Organic foods with the USDA seal are grown and processed without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or GMOs — genetically modified USDA Organic Logoorganisms (an example of a GMO is seedless grapes).

One boxed food I’d recommend to help your family improve health and get the whole grains and fiber needed in a day is Kirkland Signature Nature’s Path Organic Ancient Grains with Almonds.

Kirkland Signature Nature’s Path Organic Ancient Grains with Almonds is a granola made from rolled oats, spelt, Kamut® Khorasan wheat, quinoa, and amaranth. No those are not a foreign language … well, they kind of are as these grains have their origins from around the world. These are the grains that make up the 6g of fiber and 31g of whole grain you’ll get in one serving (3/4 cup) of Ancient Grains. I needed to break it down so I could understand this product, and here’s what I found out (if you too need a lesson): Rolled oats are just like your standard oatmeal and originate from the “Near East”. Spelt is a type of wheat grown in Central Europe. Kamut® is a brand name; Khorasan is a region of land called Middle Persia, which was pieces of today’s Middle East; and like its name says it’s wheat. Quinoa pronounced KEEN-wah is a seed native of South America. Amaranth is an African weed which we use for its seeds. However, with all the information and knowledge we now possess in agriculture, these grains are not grown only in their native lands but have been brought to North America for growing and harvesting.

So as I look at the ingredients list the only other thing I was left scratching my head about was inulin. Inulin is an ingredient which is a natural preservative made from root. All the ingredients are natural and/or organic. I was so satisfied to find that I could read the Ancient Grains’ ingredient list! And since it’s only 15 ingredients long, you should have no problem deciding if Ancient Grains is right for your family too.

clip_image003

My husband and I have been using Kirkland Signature Nature’s Path Organic Ancient Grains with Almonds as an add-in to a snack of yogurt. We measure out ¼ cup and stir it into the yogurt. This is very satisfying as a snack; it rejuvenates my energy, sustains my appetite, and offers a sweet taste which I seem to constantly crave.

One last thing I’d like to mention is I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE independent companies. Many brands are owned by parent company and smaller brands sell out to these big corporations to go national, international, or just make the big bucks. Nature’s Path Organic is owned by themselves, Nature’s Path Foods Inc. They started in 1949 and have continued to be independent; their company’s vision since 1985 has been “To be a trusted name for quality organic food in every home; socially responsible, environmentally sustainable & financially viable.” Well, they’ve earned my trust and I hope yours too. Invite them into your home for a healthier 2011.

Kirkland Signature Nature’s Path Organic Ancient Grains with Almonds can only be found at Costco. Check the cereal aisle. Don’t see it? Ask your Costco customer service about it, item #526528. Costco also offers other great Nature’s Path Organic items: Pumpkin Flax Plus Granola, and Toaster Pastry combo boxes of Brown Sugar Cinnamon Frosted and Cherry PomegranTM Frosted.

You can also find Nature’s Path Organic on Facebook and Nature’s Path Twitter @naturespath.
