No More TV until you pick up the toys

IMG_1855

Today was one of those rainy days in the Pacific Northwest where we ran outside for the five minutes of sunshine and became frozen in the time it took to go to the mailbox and back.

So, as soon as we came back in Zoe wanted to watch more TV. I said no way. Then she didn’t want to do anything. I told her if you pick up all your toys you can watch more tv. She started cleaning immediately. I didn’t think that would work on a 3 year old. Finally after about ten minutes she came over to me, yes I was helping her clean and said,

“Mommy, cleaning is hard work”

Gotta love it when they catch on so early.

  17. I always sang and would pick up like 3 toys, then my son would start singing, I’d stop picking up toys and it was DONE! Painless enough.

  18. Cleaning (blahh) Did this work?

  19. karissa says:

    too funny!
since I don’t have kids I can’t relate, but when i was little we had hardwood floors. My mom would sweep everything into the middle of the room and we had to put it back. For some reason it made it so much simpler.

  24. I agree with Zoe! It is hard work which is why I really try to not do it too often. :D

  25. Jessie C. says:

LOL, Zoe is so wise! Cleaning is definitely a HARD work!

  26. JW says:

so did you end up watching more tv?

  27. Jennifer says:

I found some $5 huge buckets at walmart and I put their toys in at night and when filled I drag it up stairs to unload them, keeps the family room clean at least!

  28. Ruth Hill says:

I have been there definitely. My daughter has been hooked on TV from six months on. She’s 7 now, and if she has to miss her favorite show, she is very distraught. She can’t do anything else and watch TV. She only likes to clean sometimes. She always wants to know what she will get if she cleans! Maybe I should tell her what she won’t get!!

  29. Randy Bailey says:

This is a very good & effective way to get kids to clean-up after themselves, BRAVO!!

  30. Mary-Frances C. says:

Haha..that’s exactly what my house looked like yesterday, and I said the same thing!
