Get everything you need for Christmas in one stop at Borders New Toy Department 100.00 #giveaway

IMG_0147

As part of a new blogger program, Borders gave me 100.00 to spend in their store. I was overwhelmed by the kindness the manager showed me. I showed up expecting them to already know I was coming and my lifeline known as my phone was accidentally left at home. So when I showed up and they looked at me like I was crazy, the manager let me use one of their computers to get on the internet. I was able to find the contact information of the PR rep that set everything up for me. We called her and everything was taken care of in seconds.

Huge thanks to the manager of the Redmond Borders; because if she had told me no, I would have either had to go all the way home or to the library to print off the information I needed. I didn’t tell my husband this story because he would have laughed at me for not taking all the information with me in a hard printed out copy.

IMG_0148 You know, it’s hard enough to get out of the house with the kids, diapers, snacks, wallet, without forgetting my brain.

My husband’s gift was the easiest. I knew exactly what I wanted to get him and I”m not going to post it on the off chance that he takes a look at this post. He said he wants to be good since it’s his only present.

I spent the rest on the kids even though, I could have picked up a few things for other family members. I’m trying to go though my family members and make sure I have what each one needs.

IMG_0149Sister 1 Movies

Sister 2 Movie Theater Gift Card

Sister 3 Husband took care of it (she does read my blog so I can’t say)

Mom and Dad 1 – gave them a laptop (so they don’t get anything else, maybe a photo book)

Mom and Dad 2 – photo book,

The kids were hard because there was so much to choose from at Borders. The above photos are what you might expect before they added an entirely new toy department.

IMG_0150

With about four aisles of toys to choose from Borders has become a toy boutique. The employees upstairs were not quite as helpful as the manager and the cashiers. I really could have used some help carrying my load downstairs to the only register. I feel like if I had been at a boutique that they would have carried all of my stuff to the register for me. It was hard to corral my kids, with my arms full, but other than that the experience was great. I mean the price difference makes carrying my own toys to the register worth the struggle.

IMG_0152 In addition to so many name brand toys and books to choose from (all of them being learning and education aids for all ages) They have a table set up where kids can read and on the other side of the tower there was a play table for children. That is a lifeline to a mom that has to do her shopping with her children with her.

Many of the items I purchased were on sale. They had buy one get one half off of all Melissa and Doug items and their clearance was buy two get one free. So I was even more attracted to their clearance than all of the new toys they had. I came home with quite a hall of goodies. Knowing me, we’ll donate half of it. We’re going to have to empty out my closet before my surgery and figure out what is getting donated and what is going under the Christmas tree. Christmas might be upstairs in my bed this year. ;-)

Borders was kind enough to not only pay for my shopping experience but they want to provide one for two of my readers.

I remember getting my first chemistry set as a kid. I played with that thing forever. I am sure it wasn’t exactly the same as the one Borders has but the idea is the same. These are great they are educational and they teach kids that science is fun. Things that are applicable then and now.

My favorite toys as a child were my doll, my books, and later games like monopoly. All of these are just as good today…playing with dolls encourages roll playing, dramatic play, etc; books are important at every stage of life to expand knowledge, to learn to read well, and to just look to books for enjoyment and while we only had one choice of monopoly games there are now many varietions of the games. It has strategy planning, negotiating, money skills, following rules, being a good sport and other skills that help a child in life as well as providing a fun game platform.

The toys on the site are a bit past my own childhood, but the American Girl dolls come close. I remember gift dolls dressed in the traditional clothes of various nations, and it was natural then to want to find out more about the countries themselves and the way of life in each. We learned geography and sociology without knowing it, and now my granddaughter learns a lot of history through her American Girl dolls and books.

I must be old, because none of those toys were around for me to play with when I was a kid, but I did have a Science kit that I loved, so I probably would have enjoyed the “My First Science Kit.” As a teacher, I know it’s important to get kids involved in science at an early age and this kit is a good intro.

I was definatly the tom boyy as a kid and played with legos I loved them and all the neighbor kids would get them all together and would make the coolest forts ever!!

Borders carries books that are bundled with craft supplies such as “Potholders and Other Loopy Projects” by Klutz. When I was a girl I had fun weaving potholders with vibrant cotton loops on a square metal frame, and giving them to my mom and grandmothers. Crafts allow kids to be creative and feel pride in accomplishment.

One of the few toys I clearly remember (excluding misc. Hot Wheels, Tonka Trucks, and the occasional Barbie Doll) was a kit which allowed you to turn your hand into a puppet. Eyes, wigs, headgear and paint to put lips onto your thumb and finger to allow your “hand puppet” to talk. Wildly silly, but 40 years later, I still remember it.

I thought the wooden blocks, Stack, Crash and Splash, from the Borders site, looked like something fun my granddaughter would enjoy.

While I loved a lot of those toys and board games, the one toy I like best that I saw offered there was the diary with a lock. First, being told that my thoughts were worth being written down and saved in a book was a wonderful self-esteem booster, and second having the lock made me feel like I had control over my thoughts and helped me begin to think about which thoughts were good for sharing with others and which ones would just remain in my diary. Too many kids today are used to the idea of publishing every thought they have to the entire world; having a private forum for them to just write and reflect privately is important.

They were the perfect gift…In fact I still have the dolls to this day. They are a great gift choice because they last…the dolls don’t fall apart. The hair gets a little raggedy but you can always brush it out and if you don’t want to, then they offer the option to have the head replaced.

I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.

Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

The best toys are the ones that inspire creativity, and few toys offer as much open-ended possibility as Lego building blocks. I spent countless hours as a child building vehicles, buildings and imaginary space craft out of Legos. I am happy to see Borders carries Lego sets. Thank you for the chance to win.

Every night my mom would read me the book :”I love you forever.” And everyday we would repeat the memorable phrase “I love you forever, I like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” Such an important phrase for kids to hear and know, and a wonderful book to take into adulthood.

  595. Elizabeth on November 25th, 2009 8:12 pm

It’s more about the books for me! I loved all the classics as a kid. Charolette’s Web probably being #1. I have already passed this on to my two older kids and hope to find more books of mine to do the same with. Borders is always a great place to find all the classics!

  596. Rosey on November 25th, 2009 8:26 pm

I saw paper bag puppets on their site, and I think they would be good for today’s kids because they spark hands-on creativity. We had a blast with those when I was a kid.

I feel that American Doll dolls and books are still a great choice today because they represent diverse, intelligent, and independent girls. They also teach a great deal about history and different time periods. I always found them quite engaging.

I don’t remember having any of the toys from their site when I was a kid (oh, so many many years ago), but I see in your picture of the store that they have lego sets. I remember every year getting a new lego set from my aunt for Christmas. Now, she gets them for my little boys, and I think they are the most fabulous presents. They really awake the engineer in my boys, and I’m always so impressed that they are able to construct all the vehicles and buildings. I remember only being able to make towers and pyramids with my legos!! Would be great to win the gift card. Thanks for the giveaway.

I played Monopoly often as a child and I believe kids would enjoy it today as well. And if they resist, the parents should not give them an option, the parents stop trying to be their ‘friend’ and say “Shut up, sit down! You will play this game with us whether you like it or not!” Ahh, yes, it brings back fond memories ;P

Wow. I’m so old that none of my childhood toys were on the page at Borders. I had several See-N-Say toys, which I think are fun learning toys. I enjoyed them when I was small. I also had a large collection of what I called “little animals and peoples” which were horses, farm animals, farmers, cowboys and indians, and some green Army men. I used to put the mine sweeper guy to work in the stables cleaning up after the horses.
