My family went out to eat tonight because we were running errands all day and I didn’t want to cook. I’m tired and need to take it easy until after I have surgery so we went out. My sister in law is visiting us so we total five.
We chose Red Robin because it is a very family friendly restaurant, usually. The food is good and you can get fruit and veggies instead of fries. When we arrived it just started pouring down rain. So we ran inside and they welcomed us in but then after they asked how many we had in our party they got a little quite and upset.
“We have three adults and need two booster seats”
FIVE
It took two of them to decide where to put us even though there was plenty of seating because we got there before the dinner rush even started. I think it was between 4:30 and 4:45. Each corner in the restaurant had a round booth so that makes four corners. Only one of them was in use.
The greeter told the person who seated us where to put us but she replied..
“I’m saving that for a FAMILY”
Umm, what are we?
I think a mom, a dad and aunt and two children qualifies as a family right. My husband told me the statement made him a little sad because he thought it was quite obvious that we were a family. What could have been the disqualifying factor, were we not big enough?

What a strange comment, especially from a “family-friendly” place! People have no common sense sometimes.
That is just crazy! What is wrong with people? I’d be torn between being ticked off and amused. Thanks for sharing your story. ; )
Things that make you go hmmm
Maybe she meant she was saving it for her family. Still not cool.
I’m pretty sure that’s a first come, first served place. You should contact management, and if that doesn’t work, contact corporate. You might score a free meal or something, and they’ll put a stop to that kind of business-killing behavior.
That is just sad. I am sorry.
Wow! I’m incredibly sorry that happened.
Typically, I love Red Robin, as you said they’re friendly & better choices, in my opinion. However that was flat out rude. I strongly think that you should go back and get the employees names and turn them in. Even if you don’t get a free meal (which is always nice), those people won’t be able to do that to someone again.. atleast not at Red Robin.
Once again, I’m truly sorry. Some people just don’t think.

Oh I would have been COMPLETELY ticked off. I would definitely contact management and talk to them about it, that is unacceptable!
That is rude! I would have said what you were thinking. That is just unacceptable!
Oh gosh that is rude =( We just went to Red Robin for the first time yesterday and we’re blown away with the customer service they showed us. I’m sorry to hear that they were crappy .
I totally would have said, “What are we chopped liver?”
That is the craziest thing I have heard.
That was a strange comment?! Odd!
I prob would have said so were not a family? That is just crazy…What would they have said if it was me, my mom & my 4 boys. We go out to lunch quite a bit! It would have ticked me off & I feel bad it hurt your husband
What a weird thing to say. Maybe it was reserved for a certain “family” but that definitely came out wrong.
It shouldn’t matter WHO is sitting where if they came in together (Their comment was extremely rude & stupid, though). A body in the seat & chance to make $ should make them happy!
That definitely sounds like it came out wrong. I know the hostesses are usually young, college or high school age and probably haven’t gone through any type of sensitivity training or are familiar with what is PC.
It’s water over the dam now, because of the he said/she said factor.
Next time I would just question and say, ‘you mean it’s reserved?’ or ask to speak to the manager then and there.
That is ridiculous! I would of complained and emailed the company and say that you were offended. I mean everyone was related to you. I dunno what they wanted. DNA tests? Marriage certificates? I mean come on. So sorry that happened to you.
I’m going to try to give that person the benefit of the doubt and hope she just misspoke and didn’t mean anything hurtful by it, but nevertheless, I would have had a hard time keeping my mouth shut had I been standing there. I’m sorry that happened.
Definitely things that make you hmmmmm.
I’m sorry you went through that. That is so weird that they would do that.
Wow that is just odd. I too love Red Robing. Wonder if they had a particular “family” waiting?
Kasandria
Wow! We love our Red Robin and they are always so nice over there. That is really too bad.
Gosh, you should forward this post to their Customer Service. It would be good for their training to see how 1 bad experience can be heard by so many.
