Cuisinart water filtration wch1500_ff1

Cuisinart contacted me and asked me to do a review of the Cuisinart Water Filtration System and I didn’t think there was anything with my water. Later after I had already told the company no, my husband said,

“I want to get a new water filter”.

Grrr.

I already agreed to host a giveaway so I’m very jealous of this giveaway. You guys get to have all the fun with this one.

Offering Consumers a Convenient Way to Enjoy Fresher-Tasting, Healthier Filtered Water

Water is one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle, though these days consumers must be increasingly vigilant about the water they consume.  Ubiquitous chemicals called phthalates can be found in nearly every American’s body, and are present in a bevy of consumer products, including plastic water bottles.  These chemicals can pose serious threats to consumers’ health*, and one way of avoiding contact with them is to filter water at home, eliminating the need for bottled water altogether.

Cuisinart is introducing an affordable and convenient means of providing healthier, filtered water for the entire family, without relying on bottles.  The Cuisinart® CleanWater® Countertop Filtration System is available in a 2-gallon capacity unit (model no. WCH-1500) that comes with two fast flow spigots for dispensing hot, cold or room-temperature filtered water, as well as an Energy Saver mode that cuts energy use by 50 percent when the function is engaged.

This new water filtration unit can be used to:

Heat water up to 194 degrees

CleanWater™ Countertop Filtration Systemmake bottles
make oatmeal
make hot chocolate
make ramen
make boiling water go faster

I currently use my Keurig machine for all of that and I think the Cuisinart Water filter is much more suited for such tasks.

Drink Cool Water at 44 degrees

quiet and refreshing

(this is the kicker, I didn’t realize it didn’t need to be refrigerated. I looked at it and thought I can’t fit that in my fridge so I don’t want it. Maybe next time I’ll read the description better before I pass up on a review)

Performance:

One of the signature benefits of the Cuisinart filtration system is that the unit’s GF-80 filter significantly reduces contaminants such as lead, mercury and copper, as well as the taste and odor of chlorine. The filter has a life of three months for average household use and is certified by the Water Quality Association.

Other:

The brushed stainless steel housing of the Cuisinart CleanWater® Countertop Filtration System makes it an attractive addition to any countertop.

Cuisinart is supporting the new water filtration unit with an extensive marketing campaign, including a dedicated website, www.cuisinartcleanwater.com, which serves as a product and information resource. The site has numerous features that educate consumers on all the aspects of water and water consumption, reinforcing the importance of drinking filtered water for the health and well-being of the entire family.

Cuisinart’s WCH-1500 filtration system joins a 1.5-gallon capacity unit (WCH-1000) from the company that dispenses cold or room temperature water from a single fast flow spigot. The filtration system also has other signature product features from Cuisinart, such as thermoelectricity and a GF-80 filter that significantly reduces contaminants.

Product Features

  • 1.5 gallon capacity
  • Dispenses cold (44°F) or room-temperature filtered water
  • Blue LED light indicate when water is ready
  • Removable water tank

Mom Start Saving Money for the Holidays

Christmas stamps: Christmas snowflake stampIn the current economic times, which is still pretty low, people need to be thinking about Christmas and how they are going to pay for it. I’m sure some families will have to get a payday advance and that still might not be enough. Other families may just decide not to get any presents but there are things you can do to make sure that you have money for the holidays. You can get cheap presents with just a little more effort.

I look around me and realize how lucky my family and I are but even we still have to plan for Christmas. We have a budget and we only spend what is in our budget every month. That includes heating costs, clothing, groceries and extras. We even put aside a little money every month into our savings account. Here are a few tricks that I recommend for everyone.

Pay your bills on time, I know it can be difficult for some families but if you organize your bills and everything you are spending money on. I mean everything, keep a journal. All the fees and credit problems that are associated with paying something late are making you pay so much more than you need to.

Turn off recurring bills.  If things really are tight consider cutting certain bills out. I know most people don’t want to sacrifice cable, but my family is. We don’t use cable so we don’t pay for it. Many families including my parents are cutting their land lines. I mean who wants a home phone that is just solicitors anyway?

Use Coupons, if you have been reading Mom Start Saving regularly then you know that there are a ton of sites out there that have on-line coupon codes. All you need to do is find them and use them. Even toy companies are printing coupons. Just this week in the Smart Source there were two different coupons for Playskool toys. One of them was for 10.00 off of a Sit and Spin and they are selling at Target for 20.00. That’s getting a toy for half price. Hasbro, Fisher Price, Playskool all have coupons for toys right now, on-line and in print.

Set money aside all year round. There are plenty of ways that you can save money all year round and gain interest on it. You could just put 5.00 away a month, now I know that’s only 60.00 at the end of the year but that could be used for 3 presents if you put a cap of 20.00 on each gift.

Use Credit Card Rewards programs. We use our credit card for every purchase. So we earn points that we can redeem for cash. Even in places like Fred Meyer, I’ll use my credit card, then we are getting Fred Meyer points and credit card points.

Sign up for Points Everywhere. Most stores have points programs now so make sure you find out what they are and how to take advantage of them. You can earn gift cards, coupons, free items. I have earned 40.00 at the Children’s place with their points programs and I get clothes from them off of the dollar rack at their outlet store.

Save your receipts. This is still one I’m trying to work on because I need to get more organized. I always find a rebate after I buy something and I feel like that’s such a waste because I didn’t have the receipt to send in with the rebate form. Also, you’ll be surprised at what you’re going to want to claim on your taxes.

Sell stuff you aren’t using anymore. You can make some quick cash by selling book and DVD’s at half price books. You can also use Half.com Amazon.com Ebay and Craigslist. Ebay is great because sometimes people just get caught up in a bidding war and end up paying more than something is worth.

Re-gift and tell people no. I know it feels like the end of the world when you can’t buy presents. I was there in college and I still felt bad. You can re-gift as long as you follow certain manners in the process. You can always make homemade gifts and those are always loved the most and often kept the longest. You can also always use the word no. I’m sorry, I can’t get you that for Christmas.

Medela — #1 Choice of Hospitals and Mothers

Medela sent me a nursing bra to donate.. So, The donation is a review but they are also providing a giveaway. And just so you know I’m not going to “review” it. I’m just going to tell you my impressions. I’m not breastfeeding anyways.

Product information:

September 13, 2009 — Two new nursing bra designs that marry comfort with style are now available from Medela, the worldwide leader in breastfeeding and breastpumping research and products. The Seamless Jacquard and Microfiber Nursing Bras are smooth under clothes and provide the optimal fit and support that moms have come to expect from the Medela intimate apparel line.

Seamless Jacquard Underwire White Both nursing bras are designed to offer moms maximum comfort. They’re available in underwire and wire-free styles with a breathable Coolmax® fabric inner frame that wicks moisture away from the body, helping mom stay cool. Straps are tapered-in to keep them in place on shoulders while the no-tag design gives moms added comfort.

-more-

All D-H cup sizes have a hidden sling for side shaping and support. Additionally, the Microfiber Nursing Bra, which is designed for larger cup sizes, offers cushioned, wider straps to help relieve shoulder pressure and prevent the straps from digging into the skin.

The Jacquard Nursing Bra features a breastfeeding reminder that slides from side to side to help moms remember which side she breastfed from last.

“Through our extensive work with nursing moms we know that correct fit and comfort are paramount for a nursing bra, but moms also want feminine details,” said Anne Ng’ang’a, product manager of intimate apparel from Medela. “The new Jacquard and Microfiber Nursing Bras give moms both, with extra features that make nursing easy and convenient, like the breastfeeding reminder.”

The new Seamless Bras join Medela’s wide range of intimate apparel offerings, which include the Sleep Bra, Comfort Bra and Nursing Camisole. To learn more about Medela’s intimate apparel, visit www.medelaintimateapparel.com. To view the fit video, visit (http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/intimate-apparel-fit-video).

Both nursing bras are available starting in October 2009. To locate a retailer near you visit http://medela.findlocation.com/.

My Impressions

Medela LogoThe bra is easy to open and close for feeding and it is made of a light material. It is soft and easy to clean. Unlike some of the other brands there are more sizes available so you can find a closer more comfortable fit. Which is important I found because you need the support from all of the weight and more control always kept me from leaking. Of course I never went without pads and they were always full. I made a ton of milk with my first and none for my second. Sizes available:

Seamless Jacquard Nursing Bra
Sizes: 32 C-D, 34-38 B-D and 40 C
Colors: white, black and latte

Seamless Microfiber Nursing Bra
Sizes: 32 DD-F, 34-38 DD-H and 40-46 D-H
Colors: white, black and mocha
Both are available in underwire and wire-free.

Fiber One Toaster Pastry Gift Basket Review and #Giveaway

My Blog Spark connects moms with General mills products. They recently sent me a gift basket full of products and a Fiber One Toaster Pastry sample.

The gift basket included an insulated lunch bag, sample of Fiber One brown sugar toaster pastry, a travel coffee mug and an event planner/calendar.

I love the flavor is sweet brown sugar and cinnamon and the fact that they have fiber in them is really great for me.

Fiber One Toaster Pastries product description:

  • Made with whole grain wheat flour
  • Serving 5 grams of fiber in each pastry (i.e. 20% of your daily value of fiber)
  • Containing 0% cholesterol and only 4 grams of total fat in each serving.
  • Rich with 4% Iron and
  • Available in 4 consumer preferred flavors- strawberry, chocolate fudge, brown sugar cinnamon and blueberry.

Brown sugar is my favorite flavor but they do make a few different flavors. They make strawberry, blueberry, and chocolate fudge. The good thing about Fiber One verses Pop Tarts is that in my opinion some of the Pop Tart flavors are too sweet. Yuck their strawberry flavor makes me want to ……

Anyways you can enter to win the gift basket:

Spore Hero Review

Spore Hero Coverart.pngSpore Hero was released last week to the public for purchase and I’m finally writing my review of the game.

It is largely based on the Spore Galactic Adventures expansion pack, and it is focused on the Creature stage from the original Spore game. Quoted from Spore Wiki.

The beginning sequence is the explanation of the premise for the game. Meteors crash into an unnamed planet and two eggs pop out of meteors located at Creature Beach and the Mushroom Valley. Each Meteor is a different color. One of them is red and these meteors cause devastation where they land. From the core of the red meteor hatches Zarkhator and he’s kinda the bad guy. Then the other color, blue meteors, then crash with very little damage. Then a creature called Meejee takes and egg from the core and hatches it. Meejee is your friend and helps you learn how to eat, play, fight, grow and become a Spore Hero.

Zarkhator appears and tries to crush you with a red meteor. He misses, but the meteor corrupts the Big Chief of Meejee’s tribe. Your creature destroys the meteor, and is rewarded with an ancient idol piece. You are told to take the ancient idol the Sage in the Ancient Grounds, but Meejee won’t let you. He wants to you to learn more and help another tribe.

This is about as far as I got in the game while I was at the Maxis Studio with my family. Well not even that far really but they told us the premise for the game and we created creatures and started the game.

My whole family liked trying out the game and creating your creature is the most part of the game. As you go around the planet and discovering things and fighting other creatures (most of them just need to have the affects of the red meteor removed) you gain more body parts. As you gain more body parts you gain more powers and abilities. Each body part is capable of doing something else a hero needs the ability to do. My 2 year old’s only compliant was there was not enough purple. It is much more fun that Spore for the PC.

Sort It Out Family Game Review and Donation by University Games

Sort it Out!University Games Sort It Out Family Game was sent to my family for review and to donate. I love the box and how it is very family oriented. The game is educational and fun. In my opinion, families need to get back to having a family night away from the TV. My family included! My kids are way too young for this game because it is meant for 12 years and up. I think of it as something like Trivial Pursuit but easier and modern questions. There are even questions about President Obama. I didn’t open the box to actually play it but here is the gist of playtime.

University Games CorporationSort it Out! begins with a simple and becomes addictive and challenging as the game continues. You put lists of things in order, such as events in the 60′s, speed of animals, or number of Oscars won by certain actors. The balance of logic, knowledge, and guessing makes each turn dynamic and often surprising. This makes it more than just knowledge because there’s always a good dose of luck involved. There are definitely obscure questions within Sort it Out!, the need to sequence things makes it a whole different ball game than simply coming up with an answer on your own. Also, every player plays every turn and never has a boring pause between turns. Because it is tricky to get every single list correct, every player has a good chance at earning points at the beginning of every round. Sometimes, players win points out of pure luck. Depending on their position on the board game, players can also move back if they get incorrect answers.

Product Description:

Sort it Out!™ is the game of putting things in order from Australia that’s sweeping across the world. A great icebreaker for groups of new friends and a battle of wits for old; it is a fast paced game where knowing just a little about something can help you win everything!
Example: Sort these animals by the usual number of adult teeth they have:
rabbit
gopher
elephant
dog
bottlenose dolphin
If you said: bottlenose dolphin (76-98), dog (42), rabbit (28), elephant (24), gopher (20)…then you have what it takes to Sort it Out!™!

For 2 – 6 players, ages 12 and up.
Contents: 1 game board, 6 moving pieces, 6 tile holders, 30 colored tiles, over 300 topic cards, 1 sand timer and instructions.

Lamaze Space Symphony Motion Gym Review, Donation and #Giveaway

I have been contacting companies for donations for the Holidays and for a fundraiser for my MOMS Club. Lamaze sent me one of the Lamaze Space Symphony Motion Gyms to review and use as a donation. Lamaze is one of the companies owned by Learning Curve. I love Learning Curve! I think when my kids start school I’m going to go back into retail part time so I can play with kids toys all day long. I love selling educational toys and Lamaze is the Baby educational toy king.

Activity Gyms are wonderful to help children develop from age 0.  The bright colors help them learn to focus, the hanging toys motivate them to reach. They are motivated to roll over and mimic sounds. They learn to smile and interact with their reflection in the mirror. The toys that hang can come off and become luvies or chewies. And in my opinion you can never have enough chews for teething. My kids did both chewing and loving with theirs. This is one of THE MOST used items we had with our kids in the baby stage. They are machine washable and easy to clean and last through more than one child. The Lamaze Gym goes together in seconds and folds up for storage and travel just as easily. We no longer need one so we are donating this one, which was agreed on with the sponsor.

Our 1 day Family Vacation in LA with D3 Publisher

My family had the wonderful opportunity to visit with D3 Publisher last weekend.  They flew our family down to the Los Angeles area for the weekend to show us their new video games. We got in to LAX around 9:30 and didn’t get to our hotel room until about 10pm. We stayed at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel which was really nice and they gave my kids Little People Toys. Anyways, the kids had fun playing in the hotel room before we settled down for bed. We’re pretty strict on our 7pm bed time at home, but this night we were all up until 11pm and we had some good family fun being silly in the hotel room.

    dance

On Saturday they kept us very busy. We had a fun day down in Southern California. They loaded us and some other families onto a big coach bus and took us out to Irvine to see their games based on the "Secret Saturdays" and "Ben10" cartoons. They work with Papaya Studios and Cartoon Network to create some very fun games. The newest version of “Ben10” is going to be the first time that you can become all ten of Ben’s creatures. I’ve never seen the cartoon but the game quality is quite impressive on the Xbox 360. We had nannies available for us to use while we were there. The nannies spent the whole day with us and my kids fell in love with one of the nannies.

Next we went to House of Champions Academy of Martial Arts for their game based on the kids TV show "Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight". We had to recover from being on a bus for an hour when we arrived. The charter bus broke down on the LA highway during rush hour traffic. This is where D3 impressed me the most. They took as much care of us as they could while we were waiting for another bus. It was hot but they had plenty of water and they even provided entertainment.

    d3

Aside from the good humor they also handed out a Nintendo DS to each mom. Inside each DS was a copy of Secret Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sun.. Finally we went back to Santa Monica (where our hotel was) for a screening of the new movie "Astro Boy" and a preview of the Astro Boy video game. The movie was good (and a rare treat – it was very clean). It  We were sitting in Dick Clark Studios previewing a movie. theater

Not only did I feel like someone that is very important but I felt like I was on a date. We haven’t had a date since my daughter was born. My kids were with the nannies and I was able to enjoy myself for an hour and watch a movie before anyone else gets to see it. I wasn’t able to finish the movie because my kids needed me but I liked what I saw. Interesting fact I didn’t know until we got back is that the original Astro Boy was the first anime ever, from back in 1952.

We didn’t have much time before we had to catch our ride to LAX on Sunday morning, but since our hotel was right across the street from the beach, we made sure to walk over there and have a bit of fun. I think this is the first time the Zoe and Miles have been to a real ocean beach.
