Finding my voice

IMG_1807 I have been writing Mom Start for one year now and still haven’t settled with a direction for my blog. I have been writing reviews and hosting giveaways and sometimes I don’t have the time I need to write as well as I know that I can. I do a lot of copy and pasting and have found that bloggers feel I don’t have a voice of my own.

I have been called terrible names and accused of being an e-mail harvester that doesn’t have any real giveaways. That’s not true and I don’t get as many products for review as I have giveaways and I only use e-mail address to contact the winner. I have been approached twice now for the sale of your e-mail addresses but I turned it down and will continue to do so. I have thought about charging to host giveaways that don’t include a review item and I sent out my media kit to a few companies and no one has accepted the payment agreement yet. This was something else that major bloggers were telling me. They said my time is valuable and I should not feel guilty charging for all the work. It’s just why would a company pay me to host a giveaway when so many other moms will do it for free.?

IMG_1818 I will not charge for reviews because then I feel that I’m not giving an accurate representation of the product. I want to make a little money to support my family but not at the cost of my readership. I doubt I will ever be a professional blogger but helping my family with what little I do receive from my blog makes a difference. I mean, it’s just like when I said a penny saved is a penny earned. If I get a coupon for a free cleaning item then I just saved my family 4 dollars. So if you want to know why I blog? The answer is to help my family save money. All the perks have just been extra.

Saving money with my blog has helped us have the capability to move into a new house. My husband has a great job and I just help us not feel so tight. I clip coupons like a mad woman and refuse to walk out of Albertsons without saving at least 100.00 dollars. I sign up for freebies and blog tours just for the coupons and savings. I’ll show you where when I can and help you find the latest savings. I’ll also try to get links to the hot bloggers that write about savings.

I am going to continue reviewing items but I’m going to shift the perspective to savings. So the reviews will contain my opinion of the product, event, or advertisement, and how it has impacted my life and saved my family money. I even want to start a weekly meme that is called “Mom Start Saving”. I want all the bloggers that write about savings and where to shop to link up so we can all help moms start saving money. I’d love to have guest bloggers and establish a relationship with other moms through this aspect.

So let’s start saving together…..and always remember why we are in it. My family is my voice.

Hostess Cupcakes are 90 years old and still delicious #giveaway

CupcakesOh Hostess you spoil me. In honor of celebrating 90 years of being America’s favorite cupcake, Hostess is giving away their chocolate CupCakes. Not only did they give me 8 boxes of cup cakes for me to share with my face to face friends; they gave me coupons for free cupcakes to share on my blog. I think they gave me five coupons. So all five coupons will go to one person.

Did you know that the cupcake was sold for 30 years before the signature squiggles and vanilla-crème were added? That’s right, originally in 1919 it was just a chocolate cupcake.

Here are some other fun facts:

TwinkiesAmericans eat more than 600 million Hostess CupCakes every year.

One of America’s BBQ capitals has a sweet spot for Hostess CupCakes.  Residents of Memphis, Tennessee eat the most Hostess CupCakes per capita of any city across the country followed by:

St. Louis
Cincinnati
Las Vegas
Louisville

While it’s hard to improve on perfection, consumers have been able to sink their teeth into a few twists on the original over the years, including the popular Golden CupCakes, which debuted in 1999.  Hostess also offers seasonal themed cup cakes including “Baseballs” in the spring – cup cakes with vanilla icing and red-swirl “stitching.”

Captain CupCake, who was introduced in the 1970s, is one of several Hostess snack “mascots” along with everyone’s favorite cowboy, Twinkie the Kid.

The original Hostess CupCake slogan was "You get a big delight in every bite!"

I received my Veggie Tales DVD and it was late. It was sent to the right address but a day or two too late. I just got my DVD on Thursday and we watched it first thing on Friday. I love Veggie Tales because I feel it’s a safe program for my children to be watching.

We can learn lessons about bible stories in a fun presentable way my children love. They love to sing and dance and know a ton of the songs. My daughter even got excited during Silly Songs with Larry, the part of the show where Larry sings a silly song. It was even very fitting for her and my son because they are both trying to graduate from the sippy cup. Mommy is just lazy and tries to make them both use it because I don’t want to clean up.

Check out photos from this DVD, and view the trailer.

Thank you goes out to Veggie Tales and to the Family Review Network for having patience with me for getting my review done late and providing the DVD in the first place.

THANKS!!!

Baby Toupees instant hair for the bald baby #giveaway

I received a baby toupee from the Family Review Network and Baby Toupee.

I thought it would fit my son but it doesn’t. He’s 18 months and has a head the size of a 3 year old. So if your child is younger or has a smaller head this will be loads of fun for you. The Baby Toupee I have to giveaway is black. It has short curly hair and is extremely soft. I think it’s actually softer than human hair.

I wanted to much to share a photo of it on my own childredfn but i couldn’t click fast enough before it was on the floor. It was just too small. I know it’s because my kids have unusually large heads.

An Excellent gift idea for an expecting mom or for a baby shower. It would also be great for an upcoming candy holiday we all know and love. I do at least. I love Halloween and always have. I’m on the search though for a boy’s Halloween costume. I think Baby Toupee should expand and make some for larger babies too. Just my two scents.

If you want a great laugh please feel free to enter to win mine.

Scooby Doo Where Are You? V3 Hello Mummy Review

1000107118DVDFLT

Scooby-Doo Where Are You? V3 Hello Mummy is up to the same mischief and mayhem as ever. It’s like classic old school Scooby Doo. afraid of everything and into all the trouble he can find.

Vol. 3 serves up Episodes 9-12 of Scooby-Doo’s original Saturday morning series.  The four episodes include, “The Backstage Rage,” “Bedlam in the Bigtop,” “A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts” and “Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too.”

Check out this You Tube Video to see for yourself.

Scooby Doo is like an iconic cartoon. Everyone should know the gang that travels around in the Mystery Machine and dresses in those seventies styles; which makes sense since it started in 1969. Fred, Velma, Daphne, and Shaggy all sleuth the mysteries. Daphne is the only one that seems to have her head on straight while Fred comes in a distant second. Although it always seems like Scooby and Shaggy solve the case by accidently running into the cause.

Freshpair celebrated National Underwear Day Belated #giveaway

image Due to my unexpected journey to Texas and house adventures Mom Start Missed National Underwear Day. National Underwear Day was on Wednesday, August 5, and Freshpair.com celebrated the entire month of August. Underwear contests and giveaways sponsored by 2(x)ist, Calvin Klein Underwear, Diesel, Wacoal, Natori and a host of other brands took place throughout the month on Freshpair.com.Over twenty of the hottest underwear brands were participating in exclusive events in honor of the underwear holiday.

We missed the giveaway month but we are going to try to make it up to my readers by offering a 30.00 Gift Card to one lucky Mom Start Reader.

I was lucky enough to get a review item on this one. I received a Spanx that covers my tummy, hips and thighs; all of my major trouble areas. I need to lose about 20 more lbs and I was hoping that Spanx would make me look that 20 lbs lighter. It works great but it’s no miracle. What I love about Spanx is that when I wear my jeans that are tight I don’t have the bulge that hangs over, it just looks smooth. The other thing I love about Spanx is while wearing a dress. You have no lines while wearing Spanx it’s great. It also does some sucking in for you (more like a lot of sucking in). I’m really pleased with it. I just wish it would take that darn weight off me permanently you know?

Brain Fuel for parents and their kids

I love brain teasers. I loved going them in school and I loved doing them at home. I was such a nerd. Doing this tour; I received a 30 day subscription to Lumonsity.com so that I could participate in some brain games.

My brain is so rusty. So I was playing some word games and man I’m rusty. I need to do some reading a little less writing. Wouldn’t you like to give your kids a fun way to get that brain back from summer vacation? My score for the first game was only 180. EEEK. it was bad.

Giving your kids an extra edge may prove easier than you think thanks to a new web-based program called BrainFuel. BrainFuel is designed to maximize our children’s learning potential.

bfood_breakfast_hugsBrainFuel4Kids.com aims to help take your child’s learning to the next level. Research suggests key changes in diet, exercise, and sleep can enhance cognitive abilities, and BrainFuel thus offers sections like "Brain Food," "Healthy Brain," and "Brain Games," aimed at engaging kids and Moms alike. Moms you can learn things like knowing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and . Breakfast helps you wake up. They even have recipes you can try.

There are four tabs at the top of the page of Brain Fuel, brain food, brain health, brain games and brain form. Each tab will take you to a new place to help either you or you child. Such as:

• Explanations for our kids in answer to their complaints, "Why vitamins?!": "The brain is the greediest organ in your body – greedier than the spleen or stomach, even greedier than the heart" and other "why?!" questions.

• Challenging games for kids from Lumosity.com, designed to promote quicker thinking, better concentration, and improved memory.

• Recipes that give your kids the right balances of carbs and protein, and help understanding those complicated nutritional labels.

The games from Lumonsity are fun and range in complexity. It’s a great way to get going again.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of BrainFuel and received an insulated lunch bag from California Innovations to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

Electrolux Text a thon for Ovarian Cancer

My aunt has been struggling with stage four cancer for 3 years now and she’s still fighting strong. So, with September marking the start of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Electrolux and Kelly Ripa will once again lend their support to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) to help find a cure. Finding a cure for one type of cancer will help other types. I hope!!!

Ovarian Cancer affects thousands of women each year, and we need your help to raise awareness about this disease. Starting today, you can participate in a unique "Text-a-Thon for a Cause" campaign to fund research and promote early detection of Ovarian cancer. We can make a difference. You can also enter for a chance to win a luxury frontload washer and dryer from Electrolux in Turquoise Sky, the color of ovarian cancer awareness. There is also a set being given away on MomCentral.com!

THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! The Washer and Dryer that is.

As part of their contribution, Electrolux will donate $200 to OCRF for every Turquoise Sky washer and dryer pair purchased. I learned about this program at Sears. They had signs up advertising it.

Kelly Ripa designed limited edition T-shirts which you can purchase online at www.kelly-confidential.com. Electrolux will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts to the cause.  Here is a quick message from Kelly.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Electrolux and received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
